From the time of the American Revolution in 1776, to the year 1852, there has been many causes to the opposition to slavery. Some have shown the support for increased opposition while others have shown to not support this opposition. This has caused many disputes about who is in the right. There is plenty of evidence between the two groups which were either supporting the opposition to slavery or they were not supporting the opposition. Three causes exist in support of and against this opposition: Social Darwinism, increased tolerance, and the need to unite the nation. These three of the many causes for the growing opposition to slavery show the rift in ideals in the United States.
Throughout American History, slavery has always posed as a problem in the United States from 1776 to 1852. Slavery grew dramatically when the country acquired new territory as a result of foreign wars, like the Mexican War. Even though there are many reasons why there was a growing opposition to slavery in the United States from 1776 to 1852, the growing opposition of slavery was caused by the country gaining new land as a result of wars and events like the Compromise of 1850 and the Second- Great Awakening which led to the development of new books and newspaper articles.
In America, opposition to slavery started with acts of defiance such as “slave resistance”, where African American slaves would rebel in several ways to attain greater freedom. While this “revolution” gathered steam, with slaves often running away from their masters and finding shelter in swamps, lakes or in cities that believed in their cause, more organized forms of opposition, led by reformers like William Garrison (Document E), who founded The American Anti-Slave Society, also started gaining traction. The growing opposition to slavery, by both slaves and their white sympathizers, eventually culminated in a determined abolitionist movement that highlighted the plight of so many and galvanized public opinion against an appalling institution.

The use of slaves has always been present in the world since the beginning of civilization, although the use and treatment of those slaves has differed widely through time and geographic location. The establishment of slavery had existed in America for longer than the country itself and up to this point in history the question of slavery had been avoided but the economy shifting towards industrialization and a political climate that was becoming increasingly stratified primed society for a confrontation of the issue. Though eventually abolished through the civil war, slavery would leave marks on the country that still influence modern society. During the nineteenth century, the abolition of slavery did not lead to many positive changes for former slaves. This was due the fact that a majority of newly freed slaves did not achieve anything close to political equality. An example can be seen in the period of “radical reconstruction” in the southern of United States, where freed blacks were able to gain full political rights and power but it came with the harsh price of segregation laws, virulent racism, denial of voting rights along with a wave of lynching that continued into the twentieth century. Johnson wrote that America was the ideal place to live, agriculture and marketing were great; it was an overall a good place to live. What changed was that the society became more anti-slavery, in my opinion. Some people wanted to abolish slavery, but others fought against this because simply this was the way they earned their living and they started to defend slavery. Slavery can easily be determined as one of the most blatant acts of dehumanization. In the narrative titled “Narrative Of The Life of Frederick Douglass”, Douglass is easily able to portray this by quoting, “I have found that, to make a contented slave, it is necessary to make a thoughtless one. It is necessary to darken his moral and mental vision, and, as far as possible, to annihilate the power of reason. He must be able to detect no inconsistencies in slavery; he must be made to feel that slavery is right; and he can be brought to that only when he ceases to be a man”, Chapter 10 page 45. The actions taken by the private citizens was more important. The citizens wrote petitions, women’s participation started a sudden change, and the abolition movement.

“Uncle Tom´s Cabin” is a profound novel in American literature and history because it brought forward a new ideology with regard to the national view on slavery, and change the cruel system that treated black people as property. This epic making narrative was seen as an inspiration for humankind because it set the grounds for the American Civil. Its author, Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896), published the text in March 1852 as a response to the “Fugitive Slave Act” that had been passed two years earlier, and in which it was considered a criminal act to help or aid any escaping slave; this brought great outrage among the citizens and transformed the novel into the most prolific anti-slavery text in American history.
