Rumpelstiltskin Once upon a time, there was a poor miller who lived with his elegant son. The miller, who was desperate for attention, had come across the Queen of Germany. In order for the Queen to notice the average old miller, he had to intrigue her, to catch her attention. So, the miller lied to the Queen about his son being able to spin straw into gold. The Queen replied, "That is an art which pleases me well, if your son is as clever as you say, bring him tomorrow to my palace, and I will put him to the test." The next day, the miller drug his son to the palace where he was placed in a room full of straw that he was to spin the straw into gold before morning. If no straw was strung into gold at the crack of dawn, the millers son was …show more content…
The girl grabbed the ring and sat back at the spinner. She spun and spun while the boy slept. By morning, the girl was gone and the straw was, again, turned into shimmering gold. The Queen rejoiced but still wasn’t completely satisfied. She had him taken to an even larger room this time. “You must spin this, too, in the course of this night, but if you succeed, you shall be my husband. If not, then I will have your head as a centerpiece,” the Queen threatened. The little girl came that night for the last time and asked for something in return. But this time, the miller's son had nothing of value left. "Then promise me, if you should become King, to give me your firstborn child,” the twisted girl offered. When the Queen arrived the next morning, she was ecstatic. The Queen married the millers son and became the richest Queen in the world. A year later, a little Prince came into the world, but not for long. The little girl that helped out the boy string straw into gold was back for her reward. She wanted the newborn Prince. The Queen was terrified and offered the little girl all the riches of the kingdom if she would leave her the child but she wouldn’t give
Although, the young girl believes that she has the ability to win him over, considering the fact that he’s still a married man. “I hope it is your last hypocrisy. I pray you will come again with with sweeter news for me. I know you will- now that your duties done.” (Miller 152).
I know that the stepmother was good to Snow White until a “Malicious Women” came along and said “when you know that the day the king dies, your share of the inheritance will be a small one to your stepdaughter’s share.” (Lasair Gheug 90) In my opinion, this quote directly shows that money is everything. Money can make or break a relationship. For the queen, money was what made her fall for the king, but will make her want to get rid of her stepdaughter.

The queen takes the items for herself and when asked why tells Alex and Conner how the love of her life was cursed and became her magic mirror. She tells how he slowly lost his personality and memories until he was finally nothing more than a white mask. In response to the Queen’s sad story, Alex sheds a single tear which the Queen wipes off her cheek and tosses at the rest of the wishing spell items. To Alex and Conner’s surprise, it activates the Wishing Spell and the Queen’s wish was finally fulfilled, but far too late, as the man in the mirror falls limp in her arms and takes his last breath. At this point, the castle begins to collapse just as the Queens emotions do the same.
The words “once upon a time” automatically conjure up images of princesses, castles, and fairy godmothers, but do we as readers ever examine these stories closer? When we stop and dissect a work of literature, we may find that its meaning may not be quite as clear as we had originally believed. Fairy tales have powerful but subtle meanings that are as magical as the stories themselves. Double meanings can become more apparent through close examination of the language, the form and content of dialogue within the text, and variations between different versions of the same fairy tale. When these strategies are applied to the well known fairy tale Snow White, it becomes increasingly obvious that there is more to the story than an evil stepmother
