Teaching is its own art form with teachers using various ideas and methods on how to actively engaged the class and present material to the class to try and help prepare them for what some would call “real life”. With all the different teaching methods and ideas, each person has a unique way of teaching a class with some methods and ideas that connected with the class and others that fail. With music educators, these methods and ideas are very crucial to help students understand exactly what the conductor wants, and how the certain music is suppose to sound like. As stated previously some of my main weaknesses are having examples to connect students with musical ideas in a way that would make sense to them, some overall confidence issues with standing up in front of a class, and stamina to be able to teach for an extended period of time. But even though I have weaknesses I also have strengths when it comes to teaching. Some strength of mine would be that I am very passionate about music and the fine arts, I am a very dedicated person when it comes to the preparation of music and trying my best to make it a rewarding journey rather than learning notes on a page, and finally, I have a caring personality, which I feel really shines through when I can tell that a student or person is distraught. For not having examples to relate musical ideas to students, to improve on that is as simple as to intently listen to a conductor when they are trying to explain a musical idea and try my best to remember and write down what they said and how it makes sense. As for confidence, I really just have to try my best and get on hand experience with other students, so the idea of teaching someone or a group of others an idea just because natural. Finally, the stamina issue has sort of the same solution with the confidence issue, so I can find ways to not strain myself as much when I am teaching and also starting physical exercise to work towards building up stamina so I can last full days, weeks, and months teaching almost every day. For my strengths, for passion, just continue to love music and explore more genres and attend more concerts to be able to hear fantastic music from all around! Dedication also has a similar solution as passion, go out and hear more concerts and groups to understand how what they did worked and how I can try to create my own unique sound that sounds pristine. Also for dedication is to study, research different styles and techniques of music and attend workshops that address this, so I can expand my understanding of music. My identity is wrapped up in my love of music because I have been surrounded by it since I was little. When I was a toddler, I would sit for long periods of time and watch videos of kids singing songs. As I grew older I participated in my church's children's choir and even held solos in my elementary school chorus. When I reached middle school I joined my school's middle school chorus in 7th grade as an alto and 8th grade as a soprano. The transition between 8th and 9th grade was important for me because I took up voice lesson in 8th grade and went to my first music camp the summer before 9th grade.
I have always been a particularly musical person. When I was younger, I wanted to become a singer when I grew up, but upon joining the choir in elementary I realized I did not have the talent for singing that I thought I had. Continually singing off key and never sounding as good as my peers did, I decided to confine myself to singing at home where only my family could hear me. Despite this revelation that I was, in fact, a terrible singer, I still wanted to participate in some type of musical performance and decided to join the band in middle school. After trying out various different instruments, I settled on the flute and quickly fell in love.
After knowing what my weaknesses are, I usually try to solve them and improve my skills. For example, I’m not a highly flexible and positive person, so I seek out to individuals who are flexible and positive in their lives and ask for their advice. Another strength that I have is that I usually have a positive outlook of my improvement, because I have seen examples of those who overcome their hardships and become successful in life, so I believe that if I try hard enough, I will be able to overcome my weaknesses. I’m also confident with my listening skills and my ability to focus on others and make them feel heard. I like to start on works and projects early so that if anything comes up, I will still have time to handle it.
In “Strengths Finder 2.0,” Tom Rath informs us that, “You cannot be anything you want to be- but you can be a lot more of who you already are” (Rath p9). I agree with him in the fact that we must focus on our strengths rather than trying to better our weaknesses in order to become successful. So many people today put their attention towards improving their weaknesses that they are surpass by others who focus on their strengths. After learning my own personal strengths, I have a better understanding of who I am and how to focus on these both in school and in the workforce.
However, I would like to concentrate on a rather unsuspecting part of my schooling as having the highest impact: my junior high music teacher. In a situation involving a strict teacher, a teacher in New Jersey used harsh words among his students and poked at them whenever they were incorrect to improve the way they used their instruments. In the long run, many of his students became highly successful. This goes to show that even aggressive and ferocious teachers and professors care about their students in their best interest.
Reflecting on my educational and practical experiences, I appreciate the infinite influence that teachers have on children. I realise that children will take the skills and knowledge learnt in the classroom and use it throughout their lives. I know a teacher has to deal with many daily pressures and challenges, in the classroom. However, I feel I require the skills needed to deal with these challenges. As a teacher I hope not only to be an educator but a positive role model, whom the children can look up to and trust.

Being an outstanding teacher goes beyond acquiring the competence and knowledge to deliver rigorous academic instruction to a diverse group of students. Personal strengths are actions or tasks that a person can perform well. These strengths comprise talents, skills and knowledge. A person uses these traits and abilities in his daily life to accomplish tasks, relate with others, and to achieve goals. Everyone has their own set of strengths. Our personal strengths are that vital aspect that makes us unique as individual, and it is part of the value we offer to the world around us.
In this part I will review myself, about what have I done and what can I do, so I can be closer to my vision. As I have mentioned in my current situations I have strength, weaknesses, opportunity and threats. My strategy is that I want to maintain my strength, overcome my weaknesses and threats and take advantage of the opportunity. My strengths are my calm and observant personality.
It is necessary for a teacher to have the students organized and transitions smoothly, but all the other little details, if thought of, help to make for a great lesson. A strong, outstanding teacher must manage the class efficiently and have some level of structure. An outstanding teacher needs to be able to analyze data, set goals, but most importantly have an inner drive to learn more, achieve the goal, and constantly adapt and do better.
Being a teacher is a journey that has much to do with learning about yourself and being aware that what happens in your classroom reflects only on how are you with yourself. Teachers are not conscious that they project into students, and that affects how things go in the classroom. I believe the first characteristic of a good teacher is that he/ she is always willing to analyze his/her teaching performance. Second the teacher is humble enough to receive input about the development and application of techniques, learning from it and improving.
Throughout my training, I implemented various strategies for engaging students in small groups and rigorous lessons. My role as a teacher is to communicate effectively, be respectful, and have self-worth and confidence. I did fear making wrong choices throughout this field experience. I set high expectations the students to achieve high goals. Teaching to me opened doors to many students’ lives.
