Social media is a huge contributor to these extremely high levels that teens are now suffering from. Social media is now everywhere all of the time. It is known for being glamorous and a place to show off how good one looks. The problem with this now is the constant pressure for the youth to have to be perfect. Social media is much to blame for this. There is an enormous amount pressure placed on young girls especially to look a certain way. Scrolling through a social media feed and seeing a page full beautiful models with perfect bikini bodies causes girls, and boys, to stress over having that same perfect body. They feel like they need to look the same way in order to be seen as beautiful. Social media is a huge misconception. People portray their lives to be perfect when in reality it isn’t. Famous Instagrammers, for example, seem to have it all figured out. They drive nice cars, have perfect bodies, and claim to be happy as can be, but in reality they are secretly struggling just like the people who are looking up to them. Beautiful young people are developing eating disorders and even taking their own lives as a result of constantly comparing themselves to people who lead a fake life on social media. This creates the desire for adolescents to be perfect. There is always the feeling that they could be better. They feel as if they are never enough, As Alice Walton writes in the article, “6 Ways Social Media Affects Our Mental Health”, “comparing our lives with others is mentally unhealthy.” When one is constantly comparing themselves to others, it will cause them to feel like they are not good enough. Growing up this way has caused teens to develop anxiety around other people, due to the thought that they …show more content…
It is known that “exposure to a moderate level of stress that you can master, can actually make you stronger and better able to manage stress” (Greenberg). Being exposed to moderate levels of stress makes one more alert and focused, it also increases mental toughness. Sports are an example of where stress is in the favor of the person, or player in this case. Being stressed makes the body release adrenaline which will cause one to play better than if they weren 't stressed. Along with stress, a moderate normal level of anxiety can be seen as a warning sign, “warning you to modulate or cease a behavior that is dangerous or counterproductive; Activating your attention to or focus on a task, and thereby heightening cognitive acuity” (Berglas). Anxiety can be used as the body saying whether or not to do something. It works as an inner intuition that essentially protects oneself. A moderate and healthy amount of stress and anxiety can ensure that one 's best effort is put forth. When one feels stressed over something it shows they care about that
Anxiety stems from social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. Social media has made it easier for teenagers to create a fake image of themselves. They are able to easily portray themselves differently. With social media it also causes kids to base their self-image on the number of likes or comments that they get after posting a status. With the rise of anxiety and the increase with technology it forms a direct relationship between the two.
Women and men are photoshopped and people on social media post photos that portray their lives as anything less than perfect. This has caused men (and women) to assume that women look like the photoshopped models in their social media feed and they are disappointed when women in real life do not meet this impossible standard. Furthermore, people become envious when they see how fun or exciting other people’s “perfect” lives look on social media. They feel if they are not living a life full of parties, exciting adventures, and sex, then they are missing out on living the perfect life. These people feel like they are not worth anything because compared to everyone else’s perfect social media life, their life is not worth living.
One usually does not know what they are going through; always be nice to everyone. Some issues teens go through are as follows: depression, bullying/cyber bullying, school, and grades. (achieve article “More Than Just Worry”) So many teens go through depression and no one usually knows. I have had negative thoughts before and they have led me to do harmful things which consist of not eating for a few days, and thinking super down on myself.
It sometimes makes me feel that their life is perfect when it is not.” (Girl, age 15)” Rather than having and showing your true life you show what you think people want to see. Because of this everyone is brought into this false belief that everyone’s life in this day and age is much better than back then when it is in some aspects and not others. Especially since people can even edit themselves on social media to be seemingly the best.
Anxiety is the body and mind’s reaction to stress and dangerous or unfamiliar situations. Unlike stress, anxiety is a typical part of life that everyone goes through and has. If you're taking an important exam, talking to your crush, or going to a new school, anxiety is a common side effect of these
“I’m so fat, why can’t I be skinny just like her!” “How does she get the perfect body, while I’m stuck with all of this fat!” These statements are common among teenage girls of today’s society. Social media of today shows unreal pictures of photoshopped models and the “perfect life”. This leads to discontent of young women with their body and lives.
Tara Scanlan and Michael Passer obtained anxiety ratings from boys and girls immediately before and after soccer matches. They found about 20% of the kids reported high levels of stress before the game, and many of them reported high anxiety after games that their teams lost. (Are Youth Sports Too Stressful, Smoll, 2014) This clearly illustrates that
According to a survey done by Jesse Fox, Ph.D., 80% of women feel bad about themselves just by looking in the mirror (Dreisbach). This has happened because of social media being changed to make girls feel like they need to have a certain body shape. Models and celebrities in magazines and media show unrealistic beauty and it contributes to eating disorders, depression, anxiety, and much more (Seventeen magazine). Media has put lots of stress on women throughout history with changing body shapes. A survey done by Dove found results that 9 out of 10 women want to change at least one aspect of their physical appearance.
Teenagers have become much more focused on what he or she looks like. This is because, they are searching their identity, and trying to be someone that the media expects them to be. With social media, comes the stereotypical version of what a man or woman should be like. For example, women are expected to dress sexy, and have the perfect barbie doll body. Whereas men, are expected to be muscular and tall.
There are various aspects of an athlete's life that can prompt stress at definite times. This may emerge due to commitments in the areas of study, sport or family/social life. Finding the healthy balance is the key, as without balance, variations within what is being prioritized only add
Should Online Time be Limited for Teens? Teenagers are spending so many hours a week online, it is affecting us in multiple ways. It results in us getting less of things we need most. There can be deeper problems within us by using too much social media. Lastly we do not know how to manage our time we spent too much time on social media.
Nowadays, many teenagers imitate famous people that they followed on Instagram. This could have an effect on another factor such as their self-esteem. Following strangers such as celebrities and models may cause the individuals to have a lower self-esteem and feel dissatisfied with their life by seeing the pictures celebrities post day-to-day about their lavish lifestyles, “perfect” bodies, and pretty faces (Wallis 2015). Next, other studies done to test the exposure of images of models to girls have found that participants who viewed pictures of the models reported a significantly lower body satisfaction and self-esteem report than those in the control group who were not exposed to any models (“Social Media and Self Esteem - Dos &Don’t for Teens and Parents”). In addition, another study in Germany call this phenomenon the “self-promotion-envy spiral,” and it happens when Instagram users compare themselves to the people they’re connected to on the platform (Dion, “The Effect of Instagram on Self-Esteem and Life Satisfaction”).
INTRODUCTION Stress is a word derived from Latin word “Stingere” meaning to draw tight. (Mojoyinola, 2008) Stress is your body’s way of responding to any kind of demand or threat. When you feel threatened, your nervous system responds by releasing a flood of stress hormones, and including adrenaline and cortisol, which rouse the body for emergency action. Your heart pounds faster, muscles tighten, blood pressure rises, breath quickens, and your senses become sharper. These physical changes increase your strength and stamina, speed your reaction time, and enhance your focus.
Girls compare they self to other girls , they tend to do this because they feel they are not prettier or popular like others. Young people have an tendency into having a perfect body, Teens will look at pictures of models or most pictures that are photoshopped and that makes a person want to maintain a “perfect body” that would get teens to think that they need to hit the gym to look like the models.
