A stronger focus on gun control in the United States involving restriction or even an outright ban of guns could serve to help the problem greatly. In 2015, 13,286 people were killed by firearms in the United States, with 26,819 suffering from non-lethal injuries (qtd. in “Guns in the US”). Taking away guns, the means that many urban criminals have to commit their crimes, would be very beneficial to cities. Recent studies found that the most effective way of reducing gun crime is to lower the amount of guns available in circulation. In the US specifically, studies show that the stricter gun laws are in a state, the lower the amount of deaths related to guns occur (Graham). While many believe that further restrictions on guns would not be feasible, both Australia and the United Kingdom managed to highly restrict or ban guns from their nations in order to reduce gun-related deaths and crime (Graham). Australia was able to rid the country of around 650,000 guns and their rate of robberies per 100,000 people sank from about 100 to 60 (cite later 1). This program of complete gun confiscation costed Australia $230 million. If a program of the same relative scale were to be done in the States, it would cost the government around $4 billion (Rieck). In this world, there are too many people that have died from guns. Some of them have died in large-scale attacks, some of them were in a gun accident. Many want more gun control laws to be passed. In fact, the gun control law must be passed through, because this can be more effective to protect people.

Gun control has been a controversial issue for many years. Many citizens believe that if gun control is strictly enforced it would reduce the threat of crime. People have the right to bear arms for protection, or even just the pleasure of hunting and recreational activity. With the recent events involving firearms and mass shootings, people are skeptical whether to increase or decrease gun laws. Americans have a constitutional right to own handguns and stricter laws and licensing will not effectively save lives.

This blog, is based on Evan Defilippis overview on the pros and cons of gun control. Defilippis develops well written and clear visual arguments on both sides of the issue. For example, he states “The main point of this argument is that criminals do not follow laws; therefore laws restricting gun ownership and types of guns would only hurt those who follow them.” “Gun control laws only help criminals, criminals do not play by the law. That is why we need to punish criminals, not law-abiding citizens by disarming them. Gun control laws is not the answer.” What he meant by this is why punish EVERYONE including people who abide by the laws that are already in place? Punish the criminals, they are the ones who do not care about abiding by the laws.

One of the most debated and intense arguments is the issue on gun control and gun policies. Gun control and gun rights is always an emotional topic that has been fought in the political arena for many years, especially during presidential elections. Gun control proponents want to see all guns extinguished and they believe that guns are a key problem to crime, but gun rights advocates believe that the right to bear arms is guaranteed by the Second Amendment of the Constitution. Gun control is not the solution to limiting or restricting crime.

According to the CDC, “Guns are responsible for over thirty-three thousand deaths in the United States annually. Gun Control is a set of laws that controls the use of guns by civilians. The Gun Control Act was signed as October 22, 1968 but was updated in 1993. As of February 23, 2018 seventy percent of people favor stricter gun laws and twenty-seven oppose of them. I believe that the Gun Control Laws should be stricter here around the United States because almost everyday something bad is happening by the use of a gun. Whether its accidental or on purpose something has to be done to make sure guns are being used the way they are suppose to be used.

The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” (McClain and Tauber, 516). Controversy has aroused because of the interpretation of this amendment. In a modern society, the meaning of “Militia” is “a group of people who are not part of the armed forces of a country but are trained like soldiers” (“Militia”, Merriam-Webster). As a matter of fact, the debate on gun control was settled in 1791, that is over 200 years ago and a lot has changed since then. During that time, civilians were obligated to participate if their state was on battle, it was necessary for individuals to bear guns at home.

So in light of the most recent school shooting that took 17 lives in Florida many ask, should the government put stricter laws on guns? There are many different opinions on this topic considering the circumstances at hand.some believe that guns should be easier to obtain others believe they should be much harder to get your hands on, there are people who think guns should be just straight up banned.

There are as many people who advocate for pro gun laws as the people who are opposed, which is the reason why gun control has become one of the most controversial topics as of right now. Background checks are defined as “checks on any private transfers of guns” (West Coast Publishing 11). This similarly debated topic is a large part of the gun control debate. The second amendment argument is a favorite topic for both sides of this argument. It can be used to help aid both sides of the gun control debate. Loopholes are another part of this grand argument, used by the side opposed to gun control, saying that loopholes are impossible to close, while the pro gun control side argues that stricter gun control and background checks make these loopholes not an issue. Both sides can be easily argued, but there is only one side that can save countless lives. Stricter gun control will work to pr otect citizens by limiting gun violence, keeping Second Amendment rights, and closing gun loopholes.

What is gun control? How do we attempt to control it and to what degree? Do we make all guns illegal or only automatic rifles such as the AR-15 for example? Not for lack of good reasoning, especially when statistics show that 40 percent of Americans know someone who was either fatally shot or committed suicide with a firearm (The Trace, 2017). However, before you form an opinion on statistics alone, try using simple logic and common sense.
