“Children go to school and learn well otherwise later on in life you will catch real hell, without an education in your head your whole life will be all misery you better off dead”. (Francisco, S., 1967) .A good education is the key to a successful life yet so many students are failing today. Without a proper education students will not be able to acquire meaningful employment .They will not be able to provide basic needs for themselves and their families. Without proper employment, poverty levels as well as, the crime rate may rise as persons struggle to survive. There are various factors affecting academic performance of students. This paper seeks to evaluate the various factors which lead to the low academic performance of students here in Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean as well as areas as far as North America and African countries. Therefore in order for the academic performance to be increased by students they must have adequate resources .However it can be argued that resource availability is not the sole factor affecting student performance, although it is a major factor. However, Woessman (2001) also noted in the study that data from the Third International Mathematics and Science Study indicated that the variation in spending on students from one country to the next does explain the difference in academic performance. It has been my experience, however that having resources does make a difference. A colleague of mine had to teach a class, in which a few of the students had the required text book. As a result, much of the classroom time was spent with her writing on the board and calling out notes. This class did not finish the syllabus and this was reflected in the poor results the students obtained in their
