INTRODUCTION. Standard dictionaries define a university as an educational institution of the highest order, being a corporate body of teachers and students and providing facilities for teaching and researchers as well as offering undergraduate and graduate programs and bestowed degrees. A student is defined as a person who studies or investigates; and faculty or academic staff is described as being related to branches of learning or the learned professions (Oxford English Dictionary, 1933). Values are standards or ideals with which we evaluate actions, people, things, or situations. Beauty, honesty, justice, peace, generosity are all examples of values that many people endorse. In a study of over 100 people, researchers found that people who completed a stressful task experienced a faster recovery when they were reminded of people with whom they had strong relationships. (Kuh, G. D 2006) Finally, on friendships individuals in university tend to develop into long term relationships. People fall in love get married, have children and leave together for very long periods. CONCLUSION. Why is social health important? Building healthy relationships is a key part of university life. Meeting new friends and maintaining existing friendships will ensure that a student has a good social support system, which is linked to greater self-esteem and decreased risk of depression. This can make it easier for the student to focus on achieving their goals, including academic goals. Getting involved will also help one feel like a part of the community and provide them with meaningful and valuable experiences. “Man is by nature a social animal; an individual who is unsocial naturally and not accidentally is either beneath our notice or more than human. Society is something that precedes the individual. Anyone who either cannot lead the common life or is so self-sufficient as not to need to, and therefore does not partake of society, is either a beast or a god.”
