“Do I need to do my homework?” is what a child says. Usually, parents respond, “Of course you need to!” People bribe kids to bring up their grades by handing them money. But, this would be where people move in the wrong direction. Paying kids for good grades is absolutely ludicrous as it does nothing but bribe the kids and they are just studying to receive money. Ordinarily, rewarding kids with money boosts their motivation, but once they realize they will not earn money, as schools use the money to make sure they have a copious amount of supplies, their motivation shoots from the sky all the way to the ground. Students will have lower academic performances in their future interviews and jobs. They should also render the warm fuzzy feelings of accomplishment, besides accomplishing something without feeling any different. From the loss of motivation to low academic performances, to not the feel of accomplishments, students should not receive money for earning good grades. Grade inflation is a reality throughout the United States. This means that students are being awarded with higher grades than they deserve or worked for. This phenomenon is affecting the quality of education throughout the country. Students insist on getting ‘’their money's worth’’ when it comes to receiving grades. Teachers don’t want to be nagged by students and administration for low grades.
In Arguelles’ essay when she is discussing with her son about getting good grades, and he hints that he should be paid for getting good grades, she states that “Doing well is its own reward. The A just confirms that” and she goes on to say that, “This is not to say that I would never praise my son for doing well in school. But my praise is not meant to reward or elicit future achievements, but rather to express my genuine delight in the satisfaction he feels at having done his best” (Arguelles, par. 4). Unfortunately, many children today will not do things unless they are given something in return, this is a false sense of entitlement. Children that grow up this way believe if they are entitled to something, they can accomplish it with little effort because they think it is automatically deserved, and they can become very ungrateful.

To prove this he will use his status and credibility, his information and statistics, and emotions to get us, the readers, to side with him. In his argument Springer uses ethos, logos and pathos to get you to lean towards his side.
In Kurt Wiesenfeld’s article “Making the Grade”, he address the issue that students want a higher grade than they deserve. He goes on to prove this be by giving examples of previous students that he has had and what can happen when students get the grades that they want and not what they deserve. In Wiesenfeld’s article he states that about ten percent of students that take his class do not care about their grades until final grades are over. “You might groan and moan, but you accepted it as the outcome of your efforts or lack thereof,” Wiesenfeld stated.
The purpose of this segment of the film is to show how incentives are able to push high school students forward to pass the classes and graduate the school. A Harvard Economist named Roland Fryer he did experiments in hundreds of classrooms in different cities. Fryer used private money to pay 18,000 kids and he spent $6.3 million dollars to do studies. This experiment was done in four cities: Chicago, Dallas, Washington and New York City. These Children were paid for having good test scores and for not fighting each other. Fryer expected a certain city to be more successful, but the experiment had no effect at all.
