Students with ADHD would benefit from graphic organizers and computer usage as differentiated instruction accommodations for this lesson. Research suggests that computer usage is a highly effective approach for students with ADHD. The interactive aspects, bright colors and sounds, and high speed are advantages for these students (Armstrong, 1999). Having students with ADHD use a computer based program for their graphic display such as PowerPoint or Prezi, will meet these students needs in a non-intrusive, effective manner. Students with ADHD have difficulty processing information, identifying main ideas, and determining relevant information. Graphic organizers are an excellent way to help structure and organize the assignment into manageable …show more content…
Students in the diverse learner group “gifted and talented” have a wide range of personal and unique characteristics, making it difficult to generalize their needs. However, they share some common factors; they comprehend complex ideas quickly, learn rapidly and in greater depth than their peers, and ask provocative question (Berger, 2005). These students need to be able to dig deeper and explore ideas connected to more abstract concepts. Modifying the product expectation is one differentiated accommodation that would effectively meet the needs of these students. “Activity selection should be based on students interest, and be used in ways to encourage self-directed learning” (Berger, 2005). The students would need to keep their content focus on the key topics of people, place and groups; and they would still need to complete a graphic display and classroom presentation. However, the scope and scale of their project can be altered. These students would pick one of the three sections as a primary focus. They would design an additional deeper level element to their selected section. For example, students could create a mock journal based on an important or founding individual depicting the thoughts, feelings and challenges of starting a life in the new
I will focus on my three focus students to prepare them for future lessons focused on main idea and details. Student A and the above level subgroup demonstrated advanced abilities to identify the main idea and describe details from a story for Lesson 2. These students will be asked to explain their reasoning during instruction in order to advance their thinking and share their thoughts with their peers, so their peers can learn from their responses as well. Student A and other above level
Organization: 1. This project is well organized from beginning to end. Student met all required deadlines. 2. This project is generally well organized.
College can become very overwhelming and stressful for most students. Long nights of studying, troublesome exams, and lengthy papers soon begin to weigh down most college students. Staying focused becomes difficult in college and most students turn to taking "smart drugs". The most commonly abused drug amongst college students is Adderall. The generic name for Adderall is amphetamine and dextroamphetamine.
Living with ADHD, I face many obstacles in my life regarding school, work, extracurricular activities and in other aspects of my life. I was officially diagnosed with ADHD when I was in the seventh grade, but despite the diagnosis later in my life, I always experienced difficulty involving school. The main challenges I face include my homework, especially if it is an assignment I have received in advance. When it comes to working on my homework, I am never able to sit down and finish it; I am always bouncing around from subject to subject. Because of the constant bouncing around while doing my homework, the biggest problem that I face with my ADHD arises, disorganization.
In Ritalin Gone Wrong, Alan Sroufe started out the article by saying that “three million children in this country take drugs for problems in focusing.” In the last 30 years, the demand for these “short term fix” drugs such as Ritalin and Adderall have been increasingly popular; these drugs are depended on for children and young adults for their basic functioning such as staying focused in school. Although these drugs provide short- term benefits to increase memory and concentration, but in the long run it could lose its effectiveness and cause serious side effects. These drugs are given to radar operators during World War II to help them focus on boring task, but now we are giving them to children and adults with Attention-deficit disorder as a way to help them focus and increase concentrate for a while. Study has also shown that children who are taking
These areas are (1) theories and research models that form the basis of curriculum development and instructional practice for individuals with gifts and talents and (2) design differentiated learning plans for individuals with gifts and talents. It is essential to understand the research and theories that shape the curriculum and instruction for students with gifts and talents. In order to fully implement the curriculum, a teacher should know about the nature and needs of the gifted learner as defined by research and theory. I would like to know more about approaches and strategies for the gifted learner that are based on scientific research and theories for gifted education. This will provide me with the ability to provide appropriate instructional practices that will directly benefit students with gifts and talents.
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common childhood disorder, impacting about 5% of children worldwide (Prasad et al., 2013). Typically children diagnosed with ADHD display symptoms such as hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention. These characteristics usually lend themselves to challenges in school and academic achievement. Children with ADHD are more likely to underachieve in school, to complete less work and receive lower grades (Prasad et al., 2013). With such an impact on educational achievement, it is important to find the most effective and beneficial interventions to aid students.
When I was a child, I always had to read paragraphs multiple times because I struggled with reading. This caused me to spend more time on reading than other children reading the same material. I thought I was stupid. Then one morning, my mother told me that I had dyslexia. Dyslexia causes reading and writing to require more energy and time.
Furthermore, the CDC tries to drive the reader away from common thoughts on the causes of ADHD, such as parenting, too much screen time, or family life (CDC, 2022-b). Overall, the CDC’s website on ADHD easily persuades its readers through the appeal of logos in the logic and reasoning found throughout the
When I think of medication, I think of medication being used to cure symptoms that face a crucial threat on the human immune system. When I think of people with ADHD, depression or anxiety disorders being medicated, it confuses me. I believe there is an enormous amount of over medicating happening. I feel as if children are not getting the proper care they need for helping with these diagnosis’s, as if medication is the easy way out. If you really stop and think about it, it’s frightening and disappointing.
(Graff 400) By allowing students express their nonacademic interests in schoolwork then students will be more interested and motivated to do well in school. So no matter what you’re most interested in or have the most knowledge about, if you’re an expert on it, you’re an intellect. My nonacademic pursuit is playing the violin, which is very challenging. You have to learn many things in order to play it correctly and not sound terrible. It takes time and patience to learn
Many children have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), and the amount of those children being prescribed a medication for their disorder has grown largely in the last couple of years. This caused concern to arise in doctors; some of them went as far to say that most children diagnosed and treated for ADHD are really just immature and undisciplined (Koplewicz). Even if this is untrue, they say that the children would do better if treated with alternative options. Children diagnosed with ADHD are in serious distress, but not because of bad teaching or parenting. It is because their brains work differently than others, and they need to be treated properly.
While they exhibit less interest for certain topics than other students, they seem to master concepts at a faster pace than others and sometimes at a higher percentile. Gifted students may appear to be self -directed in the sense that they take initiative to complete task with their peers. This can sometimes have a positive influence on other students due to the overly complex/abstract thoughts of the gifted child. The curiosity and self-motivation sets the gifted learner apart from high achievers. Problem Statement
English-language learners (ELLs) with special needs belong to a minority group and require specific direction for educators on how to help these students in the school context and how to help to improve their educational outcomes. This is one of the most important topics in the field of education in the USA. The main issue of the teachers is to decrease the achievement gap between ELLs and their peers. Though, the educational needs of ELLs are diverse and rather complicated. English language learners face many obstacles due to their cultural and linguistic diversity.
Imagine looking down at the bounded pages coated in ink in hopes of getting the newly assigned reading out of the way, but instead of seeing neatly aligned words you’re faced with jumbled letters scattered across the page appearing like alphabet soup. All you’re left with now is the thought of why. Why is this happening to me? Why can’t I just be like everyone else? Why can’t I read?
