Study habits are usually defined as student’s ability to manage time and other resources to complete an academic task successfully. ‘Study habit’ is the amount and kind of studying routines which the student is used during a regular period of study occurred in a conducive environment. Crede & Kuneel (2008) defines study habit as study routines, including, but not restricted to, frequency of studying sessions, review of material, self testing, and rehearsal of learned material and studying in a conducive environment. Study habits are commonly referred to as regular patterns in approaching study tasks. These patterns are made up of a combination of one or more individual tactics or techniques such as note taking (Wade, Trathen & Schraw 1990). When these techniques are used deliberately in …show more content…
Study habits refer to the activities carried out by learners during the learning process of improving learning. Study habits are intended to elicit and guide one's cognitive processes during learning. Study habits are learning tendencies that enable students work privately. Azikiwe (1998) describes study habits as “the adopted way and manner a student plans his private reading, after classroom learning so as to attain mastery of the subject”. According to her, “good study habits are good asset to learners because habits helps students to attain mastery in areas of specialization and ensuing excellent performance, while the opposite becomes constraint to learning & achievement leading to failure”. In recent years study skills and study habits or behaviors has been distinctly differentiated. Bliss & Mueller (1987) were among the first to note that the difference lies in distinguishing between potential and actual behavior. This distinction is elaborated
I believe that the survey presented in the Unit 2 reading assignment revealed several blind spots concerning my individual academic skills. I was startled to discover some of my individual weaknesses revealed in the survey. The survey was insightful and enlightening, as I realized that I have previously ignored some critical areas addressed. I realize that focusing on my weaknesses can compound the difficulty of achieving academic success (Bethel University, 2014). Developing my weaknesses and converting them to strengths will significantly improve the likelihood of my academic and professional success.
The reasoning behind a particular strategy depends on the context.
I like writing all my notes out when studying for a test rather than simply reading off the slides given to me. I use this tactic when studying for every test. I use all of these methods to effectively learn, making me multimodal. In Chapter four we learned that there is more than one type of memory.
Some of these techniques include the use of

External factors inevitably contribute to the processes of learning, however, a student’s task is to learn. Despite their
SCI411 Academic and personal development Portfolio: Part 1 From not being in education for a few years, being able to recognise my own academic skills, strengths and weaknesses was quite difficult. However, over these first couple of weeks in lectures my learning strengths and weaknesses have made themselves apparent. Whilst filling out the questionnaire Skills Self-Assessment Audit (Theeducators, 2013) it took a lot of understanding of the questions to be able to answer honestly, and my lowest scores reflected this in the personal effectiveness category. Skill strengths
The process used to maintain these three qualities are, however, seemingly completely incongruous
My note taking has also improved with the methods i have been instructed in. If my friends or others desire it, I will assist them in bettering their study habits as well. It is better for us all in the long run. I am hoping to keep these, and other practices, in memory when taking future classes and in improving my
Nonetheless, students should identify which few methods enhance their memory and understanding best when learning, as different students have different learning needs. Likewise, students, who are usually required to recall learning materials, are recommended to view future new materials with strong enthusiasm and determination (Shuilleabhain, 2014), as it is an approach to motivate students. However, students should take care not to practice learning techniques they are not familiar with, especially when nearing the exams; as students who, Lan (cited in Bednall and Kehoe, 2011, pp. 205-226) believes, “engage in unfamiliar strategies may induce a high working memory load, thereby diminishing the effectiveness of their study efforts.” Also, both teachers and parents alike should take the practical and relevant steps in ensuring that their students/children are well schooled in the manner of implementing effective learning techniques in their academic life.
Figure 2: Problems unsolved by having good study skills. Conclusion In conclusion, study skills are a very good key for students to learn good competences of studying to be more successful and more confident to achieve success in all their studies. However, they cannot teach students how to be motivated or give them solutions to some life
Study Habits Many students value the importance of education as it helps them to achieve their goals in life. Study habits are the ways of a student to improve their ideas academically. Study habits can also be done through positive and negative actions of a student. Good study habit refers to reading articles, writing notes, listening and reviewing lesson for the advantage of learning.
High school grows you into the person you are. I have great memories, good and bad, some learning experiences and some that I’ll take with me the rest of my life. My high school experience has influenced my development as a person inside and outside of the class by making me more independent, choosing friends wisely and teachers motivating me to attend college and accomplish goals I have set for myself. I have gained my independence slowly throughout high school. The importance of being independent is being secure with who you are and what you believe in.
