In this section, an analysis of these two theories will be presented. The analysis will be divided into four parts- the stylistic features, the lexical elements, the phonological aspect and the extra-linguistic determinants.
The Stylistic Feature
The source text- From Hundred-Plant Garden to Three-Flavour Study is a prose. Therefore, according to Reiss (2000), it belongs to a form-focused text. When translating the form-focus text, expressive expressions and similar esthetic effects that the source text gives to readers are expected to be kept.
In a similar way, based on the theory of Snell-Hornby (2012), the source text belongs to the category of modern literature. The first step is to examine the effect of cultural history. Before Lu Xun

‘Ade,我的蟋蟀们!Ade,我的覆盆子们和木莲们!’ is rendered as ‘Adieu, my crickets! Adieu, my raspberries and climbing figs’ (Lu, 2009). Ade is Germany and literally means bye in English. It is translated as Adieu which also means bye in English. However, according to Reiss (2000), for form-focused texts, the purpose of the author should be considered. Unfortunately, this report did not find any evidence that could show the purpose of Lu Xun to use Germany. Still, this report suggests that the Germany expression should be kept because maybe Lu Xun used it for a specific aim. Therefore, further study of the use of the Germany expression in the source text is encouraged. In addition, Snell-Hornby did not deal with the purpose of the author of the source text. Therefore, in this view, ‘An Integrated Approach’ could be …show more content…
The translation of From Hundred-Plant Garden to Three-Flavour Study is readable. There are some descriptions of Three—Flavour Study and the teacher. The translation tends to keep these expressions as much as possible. In addition, the source text is written in a tone of a child. Similarly, the translation also retains the tone of a child. There is not any grammatical mistake in the translation. In the consideration of these aspects, the translation is readable, which conforms to the theory of Snell-Hornby.
The Extra-Linguistic Determinants In this view, both Reiss and Snell-Hornby consider the effects of the writing background. Lu Xun was forced to leave Beijing and as a result, he was depressed. In order to relieve his sorrow and remember his carefree and happy childhood, Lu Xun wrote this prose. It is easy to find that there are some descriptions of colors, actions and appearances of the study and the teacher, which could show the particular childish personality and the happy life of Lu Xun in his childhood. Similarly, the translation also retains these particular expressions, which conforms to both theories of Reiss and

A rhetorical analysis of: “For many restaurant workers, fair conditions not on menu”, an editorial published in February, 2014 by The Boston Globe, reveals the author’s use of classic rhetorical appeals to be heavily supported with facts, including focused logos arguments. “For many restaurant workers, fair conditions not on menu” is a Boston Globe editorial published in February 2014 by author/editor Kathleen Kingsbury. Kingsbury is a Pulitzer prize winning author and is currently the deputy managing editor (The Boston Globe). “For many restaurant workers, fair conditions not on menu” aims to inform the reader of the hardships that minimum wage restaurant workers in the United States have to face and steps that could be taken to solve these issues. The article focuses in on the wage gap,
Politicians call for missile defense projects. Many defense projects have failed and cost not only the government but taxpayers over 50 billion dollars. Lee Fang, a writer for The Intercept, shows how ineffective these programs have been in the past. The persuasiveness of Lee's argument in his article “Politicians Use North Korea H-Bomb Fears to Pitch Wasteful Missile Defense Projects” is based on a logical approach using facts, (logos), an emotion approach trying to rally us up (pathos), and on his credibility and the creditability of his sources (ethos). Lee's appeal to our logical (logos) side is based on facts.
Kathryn Stockett successfully uses rhetorical devices to get the reader to feel and understand the perspectives of the protagonists. Stockett uses pathos, ethos, and logos in her book, since the book about social injustice. The topics in the book range from inequality of the sexes to social classes and racism, Stockett is successful in getting the reader to reflect while reading the book and the themes of the book have a clear presence. We see Stockett use ethos and pathos in the very first chapters when we learn that Hilly doesn't like Minny and Minny doesn't want to say why at first, but the incident with Ms. Holbrook was affecting her chances of getting a job because of the influence Hilly has over this suburban society. In some instances where Stockett uses ethos, pathos is also included in her writing.
Each Kindness and The Other Side share many differences, similarities, and valuable life lessons. In the book, “Each Kindness”, the new girl Maya wanted to acquire “true” friends, She aspired to “fit in” with the girl at her new school. This book conjured people of all ages, leaving them inspired to be kind and accepting. In the book, “The Other Side,” Clover and Annie's, two girls of different races wanted to be friends, but segregation got in the way. The fence of segregation deified their friendship.
In the book An Invisible Thread, the author often provides examples of parents that have a poor quality of parenting. First there is Laura’s father Nunziato Carino, who’s a bartender. After he is done with his shift, he would often come home drunk and yell at his son, Frank who is Five. Frank will quickly hide under his bed sheet as his father dammed his name again and again. This happened frequently and every one would hide in their rooms as unfortunate Frank takes his father’s heavy word beating each night.
On the other hand, it leaves a kind of profound thinking about the typical ordinary Chinese ideology and how great is the impact of such a decision on people’s
Hi Daniel. From reading your post, you seem like a pretty chill person! I’m very surprised that in your group of friends in middle school there wasn’t a ‘leader’. Usually, there is that one person that tends to stand out a little bit more than the rest, and sometimes without necessarily wanting too, they are seen as the head of the group. But, I think it’s a lot better to not have that ‘leader’, that way no one feels peer pressured to do something.
Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
Telling the story of 1587, Huang displays the year in a similar fashion to Sima Qian’s The First Emperor. Like Sima Qian, this telling of history focuses on one specific character for each chapter. It is chronological for each chapter, but each chapter overlaps, in part, with the ones before and following it in a more cyclical format. This means that this book has less of a western and, therefore,
When China's influences took place with both Korea and Japan, the practices created similar/different societies using the same techniques. China had strong ties with Japan and Korea due to regional trading; it's apparent that the Chinese culture had a significant impression upon the cultures of both
Often known as the Father of American Literature to many educated individuals, Ralph Waldo Emerson in his oration “The American Scholar” brilliantly provides a sublime example of how Emerson earned his title through the appliance of diction, syntax, allusions, and many other rhetorical devices and strategies. Indicated towards his highly educated audience, the Phi Beta Kappa Society, Emerson introduces the idea that the common class and common concepts of everyday life are becoming the future of art and literature through purpose, credibility, and tone. As many great writers, Emerson does not simply tell about his idea, but instead uses rhetorical strategies to help show his central point, one such strategy being purpose. Being focused on informing his audience of the coming days, the use of purpose can be
In this paper, we’ll study some of their famous pedagogy thought to explore what influences they have brought to the Chinese and westerners’ cognition and behavior and why the two civilizations developed in same period would diverge in such a degree. Furthermore, I
