Medea never intends to commit any acts of cruelty until she’s banished which eventually leads to the rising action. The King tells Medea to leave even though she has no plan and no help for her sons. She is pushed further off a cliff with no chance of escape. The moment after she has a last day granted to stay, she starts planning the murder of Jason and his wife. She feels the need to get back at Jason for what he did and any chance of getting back with him is ruined.
Medea: The Proto-feminist Medea and her struggles and actions within the play represent a rudimentary precursor to first wave feminism. Euripides creates Medea as an empowered woman strong in her convictions on divorce and the complete misogyny of her time period; but yet also strong in practice, considering herself a woman first and taking action when wronged by Jason. Medea also greatly effects first-wave feminism in this way being a representation of their ideals to the extreme. Despite being portrayed as a women in Greece, Medea displayed strong feminist practices.
“If only they had never gone! If the Argo's hull Never had winged out through the grey-blue jaws of rock And on towards Colchis!” (1) Medea serves as a tragic instrument of suffering throughout Euripides’ play, Medea, and she inevitably provokes the anguish of multiple characters. The vengeance which Medea serves ultimately defines the tragic tone of Euripides’ play. A few specific characters which Medea’s tragic actions force distress upon in order to provide a tragic mood include both Jason and Creon.
This quote shows that The Handmaids culture were taught to be submissive and it shows Offred’s interpretation of their strategies to stop revolutions or thoughts that could cause someone to revolt. The woman training them, Aunt Lydia, encourages all the handmaidens that even though the new concepts introduced in their schooling may seem strange at first, they will eventually become mundane or submissive. For if they didn’t the handmaidens would be punished for stepping out of line like one woman that did in the quote above. To promote the submissiveness all of them go through an indoctrination, the indoctrination is a brainwashing ritual at the Academy where they train to be handmaidens. Indeed, the main character of the play is Medea, a strong independent female who neglected moral and society's expectations of a woman. She was therefore in all ways different to how women were perceived in Ancient Greece. This essay will explore how Euripides' controversial characters demonstrate that his views were ahead of his time.
The Geek society had may guidelines concerning the way men and women were treated and the roles they played within society. “The concept of gender was an integral aspect of this social hierarchy; power was not evenly distributed and only men were allowed to participate in prestige activities such as politics, law, or the military” (“The Ure Museum”). The values of gender roles within the Greek society are expressed in the play Medea by Euripides. Though Euripides tried to show the disparities of how women are treated compared to men, he still uses some of the same stereotypes exhibited within Greek society. Medea is a clever woman, like the sophists of the age, she is an expert in argument and interrogation, and a powerful sorceress. They met when Jason, captain of the Argonauts, sailed to King Pelias (Medea’s father), to retrieve a Golden Fleece in order to restore his right to the throne.
Throughout the course of Seneca’s tragedy, Medea exhibits several egregious departures from traditional Roman religion. These departures are almost too numerous to be fully outlined here, but their occurrences can be roughly divided into prayer/speech and sacrifice/action. This first part will address prayer and religious language. Such departure is evident from the beginning of the play, where, as classics professor Harry Hine (1989) argues, “Seneca has created a conflict between Medea and the Chorus, who are competing for support of the gods” (Hine, p. 413).
