Like the Sun by R.K Narayan is a story that the main character Sekhar tries to do an experiment that telling the absolute truth through the entire day. Even though telling the truth is a moral and ethical standard; it brings his wife’s sullen face to Sekhar after he told her that her food is not good, and it makes the headmaster upset when Sekhar criticizes his music. Ultimately, Sekhar’s experiment ends up with the punishment from his headmaster that he has to finish scrutinizing a hundred test paper in one night. Like the Sun presents the theme that whether the absolute truth is beneficial by the attitudes and reactions from the people who become the subjects in Sekhar’s experiment. I believe that it is not beneficial for people to hear the absolute truth, because it hurts people’s pride and feelings by telling them the reality, and it is harmful for the relationship between people.
