This topic weighs heavy on my heart. Both of my parents are in their seventies, are divorced, and I will be responsible for both of their care. My prayer is that God will give me strength during this time. As we know, people are living longer than ever before. Much of this is due to the vast improvement in medical technology, enhancement in overall health conditions, and safer lifestyles (Martin, 2014). Although there are many positive developments that are occurring, there are additional challenges that the elderly face e.g. economic challenges, health issues, and emotional issues.

Someone with a higher resilience level also adds to successful aging. Unfortunately for many aging is a vulnerable time in life. Many times aging individuals begin withdrawing from the world, both socially and physically. This type of disengagement increases the level for health and emotional problems. Other aspects that leave our aging population vulnerable include elder abuse, discrimination, housing needs, depression/anxiety issues, and alcohol abuse. Adjusting to retirement and grand parenting are other stress factors. One aspect that I have to agree with is how the media portrays the elderly. Much of it depicts our elderly population as incompetent, frail, and cognitively impaired. The unfortunate part for many is that they are dependent on children, grandchildren, family, and caregivers that do not genuinely care about their health and well-being. Many of these caregivers ignore, abuse, and disrespect their aging family
• Caregivers may be hearing information that is very contrary to their own personal standards. • Caregivers may be unclear of their responsibility to report or what constitutes abuse or neglect. • Caregivers may be fearful that they will be brought into a legal matter where their reputation and character may be questioned. • Caregivers may not want to become involved. • Caregivers may be fearful of retaliation from the caregiver/alleged abuser or their agency.
Late Adulthood Many people in the United States and other industrialized countries are living longer. The life expectancy at birth now is 81 years old. Although this is an important achievement, it is important for social workers to understand the affects that increase longevity have on the individual, family life and social work practice. Hillier and Barrow (2015), associate problems of caregiving with the responsibility itself, the caregivers personal health, role strains, strained family relationships, ect. With all of this strain on an informal caregiver it seems most beneficial to the caregiver and the elderly individual to consider admittance in to an assisted living facility. Once a basis has been established as to why an elderly person is admitted in to an assisted living facility, further insight shall be established to denote what is considered elder abuse. In this movie, Life and Death in Assisted Living Facilities, several
Social and psychological needs for the elderly are no different from people my age, the quest of normal aging is formalized by the activity theory which applies to this completing this assignment. When older people maintain activities they become less isolated and find substitutes for work, friends and family that has passed. Once older people are engage and obtain social networks, social approval, and high self-esteem this enhances their well-being.
Where does resiliency come from Have you ever seen a baby smaller then your hand? Not likely you might say. In reality this happens a lot. The most common cause is the baby is born very premature due to something wrong with the baby or the mother. That's where a neonatologist comes in.
Alzheimer 's is a brain disorder that affects more than 5.3 million people in the United States. The elderly are mainly affected by loss of memory. Scientists have not yet found a cure for this disease which is destroying minds. The government has been helping with a plan giving $600 million a year. As we age and become older we change physically and mentally. Delirium, Depression, and Dementia are some of the most common psychological diagnoses in older people today. This will affect the health of the person and others will affect the quality of life that the person will have. Older adult tends to be more affected than younger adults.
Introduction I. We as a human being, we age and it is said that there will be more elderly people in the future. A. According to the graph of 2012 Population Estimates and National Projections from the Current Population Report by Jennifer M. Ortman, the population aged 65 and above is projected to be 83.7 million in 2050, almost double its estimated population of
An elderly could live in a retirement center, nursing facility, or alone with relatives and be in good health or in bad health (Papalia, Feldman, & Martorell, 2012, pg. 541-542). Chronic illness and psychical change will be occurring during late adulthood yet, another focus will be psychological development, which is heavily influenced by the social environment in which one elderly lives and thus brings out the importance of finding good living arrangements. This is a huge factor in many other life stages as well. For instance, “the state of the job market may determine when offspring choose to leave home… [or] when we retire may depend on the provisions of our pension plan.
Elder abuse can be referred to as a single or repeated act or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person. Elderly people often get abuse by people who should be their protector and carer, in most circumstances many elderly adults are abused in their own homes, in relatives’ homes, and even in facilities responsible for their care. If you suspect that an elderly person is at risk from a neglectful or overwhelmed caregiver, or being preyed upon financially, it’s important to speak up. Learning about the warning signs of elder abuse, what the risk factors are, and how you can prevent and report the problem it’s very vital in protecting the elderly from abuse, some of these abuse are; • Not caring for someone property (neglect) • Pressuring

Just simply live life at the fullest. Make everything of the life that is given now and do as much as possible before the big day comes. Aging should be something everyone should be excited about. Aging ensures that almost anyone is capable of doing things that they couldn’t have as a child.
This can be supported by the study of Park et.al. (2014) who showed significant effect of exercise in decreasing depressive symptoms and improving quality of life and self-esteem. Moreover, Choi et al. (2011) showed significantly higher self-esteem for older individuals who maintain sexual life than those who were not. On the other hand, Escolar Chua and de Guzman (2014) examined the efficiency of community-based third age learning programs on the life satisfaction, self-esteem and depression level among community dwelling Filipino elderly and found out that active involvement in third age learning programs which include opportunities for cognitive learning, physical activity, recreation, and social interaction can improve the psychological and psychosocial wellbeing of elderly.
