Hello Larry, excellent post! Agree that diversity can be challenging in the health care industry, as opposed to other industries. This is because, a more diverse demography requires the health care industry to change and be on their feet in an already stressful static environment. Despite this, it can be very rewarding helping the patients from different backgrounds and learning more about their stories and experiences. Thus, a main question from that portion of the post, in what ways can the health care industry use diversity as a way to enhance their practices regarding treating patients?
Thank you, and it was great being in this class with you, other classmates, and the professor, Dr. Hancock!
By the third year, their patient increased from 10% to 40%. Many are African Americans and Hispanics. The staff, however doesn’t reflect the patients’ diversity. The staff is 85% Caucasian, including nurses, laboratory technologies, pharmacists, and therapists. There are two African American and one Hispanic managers.
After reading Dr. Galanti 's articles about culturally competent healthcare please answer the following questions: What did you gain from reading Dr. Galanti 's article? Dr. Galanti provides insight into the relationship between cultural diversity and heath care providers. Dr. Galanti’s briefly states the difference between “stereotype and generalization”. The author recognizes that generalization may be a key factor used by workers in the health care community to bring awareness and a better understanding of cultural differences among patients. The article explains that although cultures differ in values, traditions, and beliefs, there are questions (the 4’C’s of culture) that may open up the line of communication, between provider and
While Cedars-Sinai makes strides in fostering an inclusive environment, it acknowledges the need to strengthen diversity across its workforce. The medical center has recognized that a diverse team enhances cultural competence, facilitates better patient-provider communication, and contributes to more comprehensive and patient-cantered care. To address this weakness, recruitment strategies have been implemented to attract individuals from underrepresented backgrounds and is actively working to eliminate bias in hiring/promotion processes. Additionally, the medical center has established employee resource groups and cultural sensitivity training programs to promote inclusivity/awareness within the organization. Through their embracement of diversity, Cedars-Sinai aims to provide equitable healthcare and cultivate an environment where everyone feels valued and
Indeed, you mentioned an important aspect of disparities and it is one related to the disparities affecting racial groups. The United States is a multicultural country so for a healthcare professional to treat a disease or to approach a group is necessary to consider their cultural background, traditions, and beliefs. Despite all the United States effort to eradicate the racial differences in the Country, race continues as one of the most significant factors to take into consideration when we are evaluating health care services or high quality of care. Health disparities among Hispanics most the time is caused by the type of food they consume, and the lack of access to healthcare services. In addition, some Hispanic are not the United States
The society we live in is incredibly diverse therefore it's important people are able to response appropriately. In the health care setting it's important that you reflect to diversity in work practice. At Fernleigh Residential care home in order to have successful implementation of equality and diversity in all aspects of work it's important that you ensures that colleagues, staff, service users and clients are valued, motivated and treated fairly. Diversity refers to the recognition and appreciation of the differences between individuals, such as their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, and abilities. In healthcare, diversity is an important consideration as patients come from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures, and healthcare providers must be able to provide care that is respectful of their patients' unique needs and perspectives. In this essay, I will explain how diversity influences the role of healthcare assistants (HCAs). One of the primary ways that diversity influences the role of HCAs is by affecting the care that they provide.
Disparities in health care have been an ongoing issue for more than two decades. Evidence suggests that disparities in women and minority population continue to be problematic, with little progress being made to eliminate them. Ethnic and disparities exist for several different reasons. However, several national organizations have made efforts to reduce health disparities, including the Institute of Medicine, (IOM), and the Agency for Health Research and Quality (AHRQ) as well as Healthy People 20/20.
Diversity Not Disparity in Healthcare Where does diversity live in a world of lost equality, according to Abrahamson (2015). “Diversity refers to the whole range of individual perspectives, beliefs, values that you will find in any one group of people, so if you take diversity seriously, you accept that every individual has a right to their own value system and that no person can impose their value system on another.” So, in our communities of healthcare can we accept diversity as equality and individual have rights, beliefs, and values in this system, sometimes disparities have no reasoning, but the resources should be readily available to us. The disparities in healthcare have been around for a long-time people just want to be treated
In this article, researchers noticed that racial disparities in health care are still prevalent in the United States and the outcome and treatments that blacks and Latinos, when compared to those of white patients, receive are as big as they were 50 years ago. The article looks at several different ways that institutions, such as the University of California, San Francisco, are introducing new methods to training programs that allow doctors in training to realize their own prejudices when working with patients. The article also discusses a 2007 Harvard study that shows that the traditional diversity training used in the 80’s and 90’s was not working and reinforces and confirms racial bias. In this study, researchers studied the disparities
We can assist individuals in a way that celebrates their differences as apposed to discriminating against their differences. For example, someone with mobility issues, rather than excluding them because it may be difficult due to wheelchair access, work towards finding a way to get them the access they need. Someone who is underweight and struggles with eating, we can work together with dieticians etc to find ways to boost calorie intake and to bring back the “pleasure” of eating rather than it being a
This is Marina Yudina from Acc3100 class (Tu, Th 9:55). I have an issue with my homework #2 (Bonds) grade. I would appreciate if you could look over it and, if it possible, fix it. In question 1, problem 6: I accidentally put 4,636 instead of 40,636.
While attending Weill Cornell Youth Scholars Program the summer before senior year I finally understood the importance of the underrepresented groups in society specifically in medicine. Many students who have dreams to go into medicine do not know that medicine lacks diversity, as surprising as it is this will impact us all eventually. The opportunity to listen to real life accounts of the struggles most future surgeons, medical engineers, etc., encounter until they get into their medical related careers. The common factor that each physician shared was that they all realized the lack of representation for people of color in medicine.

Today’s most business primary concern is retaining workforce diversity. Workforce diversity is one of the most challenging issue an organization face. In the era of globalization it is very much important for the organization manage the diverse work force. Diversity exists in an organization when its members differ from one another along one or more important dimensions (Thomas and Ely, 2001).Diversity should be explained in a continuous scale. If you take the whole of work force,we can say that they are unique in their own ways but in there exist certain levels of similarities. Therefore, diversity should be thought of in terms of degree or level of diversity along relevant dimensions (Dora and Keith, 1998).
