A restaurant, as defined by most online and offline sources, and widely accepted, is a business which prepares and serves food and drinks to customers in exchange for money. Meals are generally served and eaten on the premises, but many restaurants also offer take-out and food delivery services, and some only offer take-out and delivery. Restaurants vary greatly in appearance and offerings, including a wide variety of cuisines and service models ranging from inexpensive fast food restaurants and cafeterias to mid-priced family restaurants, to high-priced luxury establishments.

Many railways, the world over, also cater for the needs of travellers by providing railway refreshment rooms, a form of restaurant, at railway stations. In the 2000s, a number of travelling restaurants, specifically designed for tourists, have been created. These can be found on trams, boats, buses, etc.
Types of restaurants:
The primary types of restaurants are basically classified as per the size and ambience of the establishments. The restaurant industry depends on majorly two types of cuisines in any country/locality. The first type is the local cuisine, which is the indigenous cuisine of the land. Secondly, the restaurants can be serving global cuisine, which is popular across the world. To categorize as per the size and ambience of the establishment, we would have the following categories:
• Local Fast Food: These are the types of restaurants which serve the local speciality. In most cases, they are small establishments, running for long periods locally, serving easy to eat, fast to consume food items. The products are not very expensive, and the hygiene is not the primary concern in most fast food joints. E.g.: joints at the paranthe waali gali, New Delhi or Bade Miyan Kebabs and Rolls,
