One of my biggest supporters are my parents. Their support and conviction about the worth of acquiring an education has shaped my beliefs, values and ambition to continue higher education and use my career in a progressive way to give back to my community. Unfortunately, not everyone had the same support system like I did. Many of my peers struggled whether to continue their education or financially support their family. This is a very dangerous reality within the Latino community that needs to be addressed and resolved immediately.
I have had the pleasure of knowing Perla Báez for the past four years, as her English as a Second Language teacher and CREW leader in ninth grade at the Margarita Muñiz Academy, the only public dual-language college preparatory high school in the state of Massachusetts. The Consent Decree (also known as the META or ESOL Consent Decree) of 1990 is Florida’s framework for compliance with federal and state laws and jurisprudence regarding the education of English Language Learners (ELLs) (Govoni & Palaez, 2011). The Florida ESOL Consent Decree came about when the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), along with other civil rights/educational community organizations, decided to sue the Florida State Board of Education. The organizations were fighting for equal educational opportunity for all students, regardless of the individual’s primary language. Students in English for Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) program were not receiving an education that met their cognitive level because teachers in most schools were not properly trained to give ELL students an appropriate education. Teachers lacked the training to facilitate equal opportunity to the students.
Growing up in a Spanish speaking household, I was an ELL student when I was in elementary school. My mom only speaks Spanish, and my dad speaks both English and Spanish, but his fluency in English came many years later. My first language was Spanish, but I learned English soon after I learned Spanish. As a result, I clearly remember having to take the CELDT test, which is a test that is given to any student who do not speak English at home, and is used to measure the students proficiency in English. Science is a unique subject in and of itself, because the real challenge arises when science teachers aim to my make the science content comprehensible.
ELL students stands for “English Language Learner”. These students are learning the English language as their second language. ELL students run into many challenges when learning the English Language. One of the challenges an ELL might encounter is a time gap to learn a new language (Graves 2011). The earlier some can learn age the better because the brain is more flexible to learning a language at a younger age.
