Greene was also a close friend of George Washington. The son of a wealthy Rhode Island Quaker, Greene had things in common with George Washington in that he was a self-made man who educated himself and read books particularly on battle strategies. When the call came out to join the war, Greene was ready to go. Greene had a stiff leg, which disqualified him as an officer so he joined the infantry instead. In no time at all he was made the commander of the Rhode Island Army of Observation. This was mostly due to his willingness to march in the ranks. Starting with his appointment as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army and continuing through his failures and successes as he leads an inexperienced group of soldiers to fight against Britain’s army. One of the first battles in the book is the one at Bunker Hill. They lost the battle but both sides suffered casualties. After Bunker Hill they were able to secure the city of Boston. After regaining Boston, Washington brought his army to defend New York City. The Battle of Long Island was the largest in the Revolution. This book is an impressive biography of Washington's remarkable dedication to the United States history. According to the author, George Washington is an omnipresent figure as he was growing up, described as the man in the moon who was aloof and silent. This book focuses on Washington's wartime service which became some of his major contributions to the United States, rather than merely telling the true story of Washington, its main thesis is focusing on analyzing his contributions and how his governorship had affected the American history. Washington's life is divided into three areas in this book.
Dorman T. Shindler of The Denver Post calls 1776 a book that “Should be required reading in living rooms from coast to coast”. That is a very bold statement considering the historical information isn’t always the most interesting. McCullough tells the tale of the fight for independence highlight the key people, such as Washington himself, and how it all came to be. The book is structured into three large subdivisions, making it easy to follow and keeping the events in order. It is written with all sides of the war in mind, actual fighting and the literal thinking, as well as the points of view for all sides.
Valley Forge- Dec. 19 1777-June 19 1778. Valley Forge was the a winter camp for the continental army. This winter was one of the toughest winters the army faced. They lacked enough food and supplies that they need most. Washington had the toughest job: keeping the army together.
He was deported back to Britain after the Battle of Bunker Hill, where his men sustained more than 1,000 casualties. Nathanael Greene didn’t really start to lead until the war had started, and he led men for most of the Revolution. The two men led in different ways and at different times. There were some similarities between Gage and Greene, however. One was that they were both major generals at one point, though for different forces.
The Book of 1776 takes place on October 26, 1775 with King George III having a procession in his-self designed 4-ton coach. Despite his high life designed coach, he was a simple man with a lifestyle of that of a farmer. Many had thought of the King to be an unintelligent and uncommonly ugly, yet this was quite opposite. King George III was tall, and robust man, with clear blue eyes and an exceptional taste for music. He was quite talented to have learned piano and violin.

McCullough achieves this through mostly logos, but uses ethos and pathos just as well.

The titles of each chapter of this book reflect this focus, and the author walks the reader over the history of this great man; showing Washington’s strengths, weaknesses, good decisions and poor. He an imperfect man, nonetheless loved his country and was devoted to the cause of her liberty, despite the cost. George Washington a great man who had countless writings regarding his life and the careers that he occupied throughout his lifespan.

After teaching at Union Grammar School he became a 1st Lieutenant for the continental army. On August 22nd of 1776 the British General William Howe came with his redcoat army to the battle of Long Island.
He served in the army for eight ( 8 ) years, 1175-1783. In 1776 he was made a major general. General Greene was great friends with George Washington at the time, and fought many battles, and led many troops. Nathanael traveled to Savannah, GA on a business trip, on June 12, 1786. On his way home, he stopped at one of his friends plantations, and was exposed to the very hot rays of the Sun.

George Washington joined the French Indian war in 1754. He would later serve under Gen. Edward Braddock. During the Battle of Monogahela in 1755 Braddock would be killed and George Washington took control and would get some order back on his side of the battle. He would get some of the remaining troops and there lives would be saved. After this battle he would become well known throughout the colonies and throughout England.
When Washington became commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, he proved to be a better general than any military strategist. He was able to keep his poorly trained, malnutritious, and less equipped soldiers intact. He was a major key factor in winning the war against Britain and keeping American morale alive when there was no hope left. In David Hackett Fischer’s book, “Washington’s Crossing”, he describes the troubles and even the unknowns of Washington’s experiences during the Revolutionary War.
