The “it” in this short story is his hope, because he hopes that he will be a telephone operator, hopes that his mother will walk in with him on his first day of his new school, and he hopes that he won’t get in trouble with his parents. This shows that his hope is lost throughout the short story. To begin with, his parents have always had high hopes that their son will become a telephone operator. Would you survive living in this erratic town? Since the beginning of the story, Edward Bloor has depicted Erik Fisher as the self-indulgent, antagonist in the novel. Paul Fisher, the protagonist, is much more caring and kind compared to his immoral and dishonorable brother. Bloor reveals Erik’s dissolute characteristics by showing his actions after Mike Costello’s death.
To Change is to Grow Through the book “The Road” by Cormac McCarthy the boy and the father show a great amount of change and maturity, while also learning to adapt and love. The story has a good balance of how different events can affect and impact someone's life in either a good or bad way. There are many events that change the mind and heart of the boy and father, but change can only be helpful if you learn from it and mature out of being afraid for things to happen. The stories main idea is very tragic in a dark, grey world where nothing ever good happens and instead of learning to live your preparing to die.

In Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art, he names chapter three “Blood in the Gutter”. In this chapter McCloud explores within comics the topics of perception, closure and transitions.
