Sarah makes a living restoring antique quilts and renting out some of the rooms in her house. One of the biggest mysteries in her family is the disappearance of her grandmother Molly in 1920 leaving behind a six-year-old boy and a husband. In what could be termed a lucky break, Sarah’s granddaughters stumble upon a secret passageway in the old family home. The passageway leads to a room that has a quilt that belonged to her father – the then six-year-old boy.
In the book The House of Seven Gables written by Nathaniel Hawthorne both Clifford and Hepzibah experienced significant life changes, however I think Hepzibah’s changes were more profound. There are many ways in which Hepzibah’s life changed in the progression of the book. Although she wasn’t locked up in prison as her brother Clifford was, she was imprisoned by the house and its history. At the end of the book she finally breaks free and starts a new life in the country away from the isolation of the House of Seven Gables. The reader is introduced to Hepzibah as being a sixty year old spinster who appears as gray and gloomy as the House of Seven Gables.

After reading this week’s readings I have found that the fact that Mary Wilkins Freeman was best known for her ghost stories is really interesting. I am interested in the horror genre as far as movies and books go. When I was reading the lesson and found out that she was known for these types of stories I was excited and looked forward to reading the story. However, when I was reading “The Revolt of “Mother””. I did not see any similarities that would make me think that she was known for her ghost stories.
Laurel MaKelva Hand the protagonist of the novel The Optimist Daughter, is a hard working widow in her forties and the only child of Judge McKelva. Throughout the novel, she is caught in-between funerals, reminiscing her old memories while she still lived in Mount Salus and connecting them throughout events happening. She was never really at peace in Mount Salus, but as she encounter with letters written by her parents amongst other things, and with her beloved friends and neighbors, things start connecting. Laurel’s friends and neighbors are who we see her narration being created by, which also creates the postmodernist view. Despite Judge McKelva isn’t considered to be a huge character, he’s important in the sense of being the connection
In The Book Thief, Liesel comes into ownership of many books that become symbols in her life. From persecution, to friendship, to coming to terms with anger Liesel’s books taught lessons. The Gravedigger’s Handbook symbolises a lot of things for Liesel. One of the things it symbolizes is the last time she saw her mother and brother. The day she stole the book was the day of her brother’s funeral and the day her mother gave her up to her foster parents.
