Running head: GUN VIOLENCE GUN VIOLENCE What Changes Should Be Made Cassius A. Kurns Jr Mr. Redmond Leo High School A way that we can decrease gun violence is have a stricter sale on firearms. Loopholes now exist in the background check system that make it possible for people with criminal records or mental health issues to procure guns. For instance, a gun purchased over the Internet or from a private individual at a gun show is not subject to a background check because neither instance involves licensed gun sellers. Anybody of age can go to a gun show or online to purchase any firearm. If background checks, and polygraph test, then we can decrease gun violence.
Many gun advocates question how banning the use of guns for the civilians in U.S. would help protect the civilians when there are so many other forms of weapons that can replace guns (Adcock, “Harvard study reveals gun control counterproductive). In reality,
Gun control is a heavily debated topic that many people stand for and against. Gun control has many different backgrounds as well. With gun control there will be less mass shootings like the 2016 shooting in Orlando and the 2017 shooting in Las Vegas (“Gun”). Gun Control laws will help prevent this because it will help keep guns out of the hands of criminals and any other type of released terrorist the best it can.To understand gun control more, it is important to know about the laws passed, pros, and cons. Although there are many different topics that are important to Gun Control, some may believe that the most important is about the laws of Gun Control.
See criminals are always going to get their hands on guns no matter how many gun restrictions we pass. We can’t stop people from getting guns because there has to be at least 310 million guns and maybe 180 billion rounds of ammo in the US. Now the NORC in 2001 found that 59 percent of people with concealed handguns felt safer when they left their home. That means people from big cities felt safer when they left their homes because they had a concealed handgun. In 2014 there was a 23% incline from women that concealed handguns made them feel safe.
Even though there are many mass shootings in the US, assault weapons are actually not even connected to a significant amount of crime in the US. Assault weapons only many effect mass shootings, and even then not all mass shootings involve assault weapons in the first place. If anything a ban on assault weapons would just lead to a ban on handguns. Trying to get assault weapons banned will just lead to the broader focus which is a ban on handguns, which are more crimes are committed with anyway. Also, you can never really put a stop to psychopaths in the US, people can always find a way to get ahold of dangerous assault weapons.
Like this man they feel that they need to protect themselves before others decide to kill. (add citation). Some people feel as though they have no choice but to carry a firearm because they feel as though they are in so much danger. People should not have to buy a handgun because they are scared that is not the answer. However this should not be the way “By one government estimate, Americans use guns to defend themselves or thwart crimes hundreds of times a day.
Gun control laws have been a hot and controversial topic for some time now. Many different parties have argued with each other about applying laws that will control firearms in the U.S. I chose to write about this debate because I do not have a personal opinion on the matter, I do not own a gun or am an enthusiast, neither do I argue for gun restrictions. Many argue with points that it is written in our constitution our natural right to bear arms, while others argue that if we remove the ability to use a firearm or a weapon that is designed to kill someone, we will ultimately reduce or remove violent crimes in the U.S.. An article that argued for strict gun control demonstrated many of the author’s ideas through statistics and data, however,
They stated eight different ways to obtain guns, three of them are illegal which are gun trafficking, theft and purchases made by other people for someone deemed un fit to buy a gun. The other five are all legal, the, gun shows, private transactions between citizens, and internet/article sells. First, there is no real way to track all the guns sold in the united states. This is because the FBI only does background checks of sales and purchases made at gun stores, pawn shops, and internet/article sells. An article written by CriminalWatchDog.Inc informed me that background checks are conducted to reveal if you are eligible to buy a gun or not.
Some believe that this is a terrible amendment to have our country live by, this group supports enforcing gun laws or even abolishing guns all together. This is not the only side of the argument though, there are opposers to enforcing gun laws that believe that there are already enough laws for buying guns and what you can do with them. The opposers also believe that we should focus more of our efforts on the mental health of the people instead of the guns they use. The debate on gun control is a very pressing matter. Some believe that the laws on gun control should be stricter, while others believe the laws should be looser for self-defense and hunting.
Would Stricter Gun Control Laws Benefit America? The highly debatable question has flooded the minds of Americans. It is continued to be argued throughout America. The Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States clearly states: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.” Obama’s effort to enforce this amendment may leave America in a frantic position. Stricter gun laws would not benefit America because they would restrict the rights of citizens, restrict the reliability and freedom citizens deserve, and would do nothing to prevent killings from occurring.
Vermont is a three-time winner of “Safest State Award.” Criminals avoid armed citizens. A criminal will avert a rape attempt when the victim carries or uses firearms for protection. “A justice department study shows that 3/5 of felons polled ‘agreed that a criminal is not going to mess around with a victim when he knows they have a gun.’” Pro gun control activists argue that more guns equal more suicides. A report from the
Many activists for gun control are reaching out try to ban guns in America. During the National Rifle Association (NRA) Press Conference on December 21, 2012, Executive Vice President Wayne Lapierre, speaks out against these activists and exclaims “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” After hearing about the tragedy, Lapierre wants every school in America to deploy a protection program to keep its students safe. The NRA faces criticism from all over America, about how they are to blame, but Lapierre puts the blame on video games and violent movies such as, “American Psycho” and “Natural Born Killers.” He questions, “Isn’t fantasizing about killing people as a way to get your kicks really the filthiest form of pornography?” Lapierre is willing to give training to both students and teachers on the proper precautions
People also “...support the rights of hunters, sport shooters, and recreational gunmen.” (openreader.org).Criminals are already breaking the law, so adding more won 't deter them. “Criminals will get hold of guns – indeed, by definition, if guns are outlawed, one becomes a criminal just by acquiring one – and leave non-criminals more vulnerable than ever.” (bigthink.com). Gun control laws do not help deter, and only slightly inconvenience them. Guns are a high trade item in the US, so there are definitely many other illegal sources. Also making strict gun laws takes power from the people.
