Industrialisation and Its Influence on The Little House in Virginia Lee Burton's story Industrialisation had a big influence on everybody's life and changed a lot around the 19th century. This development leads to the question of whether these environmental changes had a more positive or rather a negative effect on the feelings and mood of their surrounding. This paper takes a closer look at the representation of industrialisation in Virginia Lee Burton's The Little House and in how far this has an effect on the little house's mood and feelings. Moreover, the paper argues that industrialisation is delineated in a literary and as well in a visual way and that the industrialisation and so the environmental change has a negative effect on the …show more content…
The definition of industrialise/ industrialisation is described as: “If a country or an area is industrialised or if it industrialises, industries are developed there” (Oxford 662). And also the authors Juneja and Wenzlhuemer express it precisely when saying that industrialisation is the process of economic increase in forms of mechanising or infrastructure, for instance. (98) Most of these features are presented in a literary and also in a visual way. When the little house realises that “the lights of the city seemed brighter and closer” the industrialisation had begun already (Burton 12). With the building of small houses, gasoline stations and country roads, the area develops and expands more and more. In the pictures, lanterns and electricity lines can be found, what illustrates the energy consumption. Furthermore, the railway station and the rails clarify the transportation with the help of railways, which is essentially for industrialisation (12-35). For these reasons, it can be said that lots of industrial characteristics exist in the story of The little House and that industrialisation is represented literary and …show more content…
This is for example demonstrated in the forms of built gasoline stations, roads and subways. What it comes down to is that Burton's attitude towards industrialisation is presented in a quite pessimistic and critical way. Indeed, this can be seen in the change of the little house's mood and feelings, when the countryside develops into a city. This change can be traced back to the environmental change, caused by the industrialisation from page twelve on. At the beginning of the story, the little house is very happy, content and cosseted, but when the city comes closer and closer and consequently industrialisation takes place, the little house is very sad, because nobody cares of it any more. When in the end the little house is brought back to the countryside, it is satisfied as before and smiles again
The conclusion of the eighteenth century and the dawn of the nineteenth was a time of great growth of industry in America. There were many positives of this growth, and many negatives. One positive were that everybody has more luxuries; another positive was that a lot of money came into the US. There were many severe negatives of the new growth of industry. Two of these were horrible factory conditions, and child labor.
While some might argue that industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because of new machines, it was actually a negative thing for society. Industrialization’s negative effects were child labor, disgusting living conditions, and hard, dangerous, filthy jobs for little pay. One of the negative effects of Industrialization was child labor. Many children worked during the Industrial Revolution because they needed to support their families. Lots of them started working very young.
Imagine a time where machines replaced people, iron replaced wood and steel replaced iron. A time where the electric light bulb has just been invented and the railroad was expanding across America. Industrialization was a huge turning and growing point for the United States. It helped shape the United States and the world we live in today. Through the inventions, development of businesses, and laws passed by the government industrialization had a positive effect on the United States.
The Industrial Revolution, lasting from the late 1700s until the early 1900s, was possibly one of the greatest time periods in this world’s history. This time period caused people to think more and dream bigger. From these big dreams rose up inventors, entrepreneurs, and business owners. The Industrial Revolution brought many new inventions and production processes, but along with great new things come great terrible horrors. While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because of the new production methods and what they produced, it was actually a negative thing for society.
(Shmoop.com) This example clearly demonstrates how capitalism during this era was present in the novel, it reveals how the owners took control of their factories without the control of the government. Even more the novel’s tittle symbolizes the ambitious nature of capitalism; Packingtown is a crude image of a Darwinian jungle,
The Out of Many textbook discusses the history of America. A huge part of the history in America is industrialization. Chapter 19 of the textbook talks about the industrial city in which The Jungle by Upton Sinclair opens the realities factory life and work in the early 1900’s. The Jungle tells about the lives of the workers in factories, specifically meat, and how harsh and disgusting their work really was. The topic of industrial cities and their living and working conditions from the Out of Many textbook is weaved in The Jungle .
Industrial life increased employment for both the wealthy rich people and the poor people. Factory production played a major role in industrialization; the economy was rough during this period of time for working class people, life for the poor was harsh and incomes were low. Therefore, many people created their own clothing, furniture and tools. The factory production provided employment for many women and children as well. In the text it says, “…mill owners began referring to the workers as “poor children,” that description of people.”
The purpose of John Steinbeck’s passage is to demonstrate the decay of the inner city as the city expands and grows. Steinbeck illustrates his purpose through the use of various rhetorical devices. Steinbeck’s use of imagery helps him achieve his purpose. Throughout the passage, various descriptions of poverty-filled, dirty, and negative images help him show how the inner city is spiraling towards a much harsher, ill city as time goes on. Steinbeck displays his view of the inner city’s decay as he describes previous commercial properties: “...and small fringe businesses take the place of once flowering establishments.”
The Industrial Revolution was a horrific time in the 1700s by the fact that it caused bad pollution and children would be worn out at the end of their work day. The greatest aspect of industrialization was that the kids and adults had good surroundings. “Of these there are 500 children who are entirely fed, clothed, and educated by Mr.Dale” (Document 6). The quote is evidence that shows the kids were well cared for.
Paragraph 1: Industrialization really took of in the United States during the late 1800s and the early 1900s. Before then, America 's population had mostly lived out in the farms and ranches of the country, but that was about to change when more and more people started to move to the cities for work. Most of the people that moved, found themselves in factory jobs for the steel industry or alike, or working for the railroads. Companies could really thrive, as the United States government, adopted a policy of Laissez Faire. This is also about the time that immigration really kicked up, more and more immigrants were showing at Ellis Island, looking for a new start.
Prior to the Industrial Revolution, which began in Britain in the late 1700s, manufacturing was often done in people’s homes, using hand tools or basic machines. Industrialization marked a shift to powered, special-purpose machinery, factories and mass production. The iron and textile industries, along with the development of the steam engine, played central roles in the Industrial Revolution, which also saw improved systems of
The Industrial Revolution caused these parents to work all day in order to have barely enough money to keep their families alive. The children never got to spend time with their parents as a result of this, and therefore did not have the chance to develop healthy relationships with them as every child should. Finally, the quality of houses and living diminished due to the industrialization. An example of this is shown in a photo of an urban tenement during the Industrialization Period, where living conditions were very cramped. There were multiple families living in one home, and the houses were built very close together.
It was simple for capitalists to cut costs in terms of labor because workers depended on holding a job to survive. As a result, working conditions worsened, and wages decreased substantially. In Zola’s Germinal, the working-class Maheu family faced horrible working conditions in the coal mine. The conditions are described using these gruesome terms: “At the bottom of the shaft, it had been very cold, and in the haulage roadway—through which all the air in the mine passed—an icy wind blew, whipped to a storm by the narrowness of the space between the walls.
Additionally , the house that the narrator mentions is illustrated as “ mansion of gloom “ which might be a sign that the aura of the house has something dreadful in it. However , the Narrator reveals something important about his first impression for the house by saying “ I looked upon the scene before me , upon the mere house, upon the bleak walls , upon the vacant eye-like windows ( 3 ).To illustrate , the words such as “ air of heaven , silent tarn , mystic vapor “ used as a reinforcement for making the ambience of the house as gloomy. In fact , in the light of these facts , it could be said that the house has an darkness appearance which might be an indication of its mysterious atmosphere.
The Industrial Revolution can be argued to be one of the biggest advances to mankind, as it had far reaching impacts on various parts of the world (Angeles, 2016). Due to these various impacts, it paved the way for one of the greatest revolutions, which changed the world to facilitate what we see as “Modern Day Advancements”. In this essay I will be discussing why the Industrial Revolution had started in England and the effects of the revolution around the world. There is a confluence of reasons as to why the Industrial Revolution had begun in England. The Agricultural Revolution had led to an increased food production and increased population overall in England (Beck).
