Julia Alvarez’s novel, In the Time of the Butterflies, immediately grabbed my attention and intrigued me by the first page. I have never read a book that has brought me so much sorrow yet so much inspiration. Several of the stories in this novel, made me think about how hard it would be to live under a dictatorship. Even though it was very hard to read, I was inspired to be kind to everyone because you never know what someone is going through. We as humans also need to think of those who are living in fear for their lives in dictated countries. This book was very eye opening for me because I realized that there is a lot of suffering that goes on in the world. A section of the book that caught my attention was when Minerva was the narrator. The scene that mainly caught my attention was when Minerva meets a little girl named Sinita. Sinita is described to be “a skinny girl with a sour …show more content…
In the first chapter of the novel, Dede recalls a time when her father bad mouthed their dictator, Trujillo, and was scared the spies heard. After Papa says, this Dede states that “Suddenly, the dark fills with spies who are paid to hear things and report them to Security”(Alvarez 9). It is devastating to think that Dede's father could not even talk freely in his own home. I cannot imagine how much fear people who live under a dictatorship live in. It was so hard for me to think that if they got caught for having an opinion, they would be killed. In America, people post and openly express their opinions about our government every day, and nothing bad happens to them. Because of this, we often forget that people live in fear because of their country's leader. Trujillo is an evil man who kills people yet everyone must worship and obey him. That concept is alarming to me especially after reading about how he killed Sinita’s brother and multiple
Once out of prison, Minerva, Patria, and Maria Teresa drove across a mountain pass to visit their husbands in prison, but they are ambushed and murdered under the request of Trujillo. Their deaths were stage to look like a car accident and Dedé was forced to live on and tell the world of how Trujillo destroyed their
In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez portrays the Dominican Republics in a time where Rafael Leonidas Trujillo is the ruthless dictator. Throughout the novel, Trujillo accentuates the idea of manipulation by controlling all aspects of Dominican life and manipulates Dominicans from an early age by alluding himself to be the ideal leader. In the beginning of the novel there is a passage from a textbook that is meant for young Dominican children: “All through nature there is a feeling of ecstasy. A strange otherworldly light suffuses the house smelling of the labor and sanctity.
In the book In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez, Minerva is shown to be motivated to fight for the revolution and for the people. This revolutionary mindset has led her to fight against Trujillo, led her into prison, and eventually led to her death. Her attempts weren’t for nothing though as Trujillo would fall shortly after and Minerva and her sisters would be remembered as leaders of the revolution. Throughout her life Minerva’s relationships and health has been greatly impacted by her revolutionary ideologies because of how devoted she is to her goals, her relationships with her sisters, and her mental health struggles after being released from prison. Minerva’s driving motivation throughout a good part of her life had been
According to “Biography” During Trujillo's campaign, he organized a secret police force to torture and murder supporters of the opposing
What a Dictator Wants vs. What a Dictator Does Not Want What silence is to a reigning dictator, corruption is to government officials. When citizens are in fear they tend to be silent and never lash out at their rulers as great or fatal consequences can result. On the other hand, silence can stir up resistance to the power of a dictator ending their rule. In the book, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz, the setting takes place in the Dominican Republic where the crude dictator Trujillo rules and installs fear in his people. Trujillo does as he pleases and has many personal "eye witnesses" to back him up if needed.
One of them is the way he betrayed his country to get to the top. Trujillo was part of the National Guard in 1919 and trained for the U.S marines and earned the rank of general only nine years later. When a rebellion soon broke out against President Horacio Vasquez, Trujillo made special connections with the rebel leader Estrella Urena so he could run for the new elections. AS soon as the rebels captured the capital, Trujillo was the only candidate to run. Trujillo won with 95% of the vote and immediately took the dictatorial powers.
Anita and Julia have very similar problems, because Anita uncle and father did not like Dictator Trujillo and also made plans to assassinate him. In Anita story there was many secret before she find out the plan about her uncle be in hiding to from being arrested for trying to assassinate the dictator, “ As we come in view of the casita, I stop in my tracks as if I’ve seen a ghost. The door to Tio Toni casita is opened a crack! ....... “It’s not supposed to be open,” I whisper.
I knew the father of the Mirabal sisters got in prison after I read chapter 6. The reason why Papa got in prison was he left the communist party before Trujillo; that was an action that against the laws in the Dominican Republic. The proofs of that from the book are: “We already know from Dedé and Patria’s searches that Papa has been in the prison hospital”(Alvarez, 1994, page 63); “ ‘Trujillo is the law,’ Papa whispered, as we all did nowadays when we pronounced the dreaded name”(Alvarez, 1994, page 49). These sentences show that Trujillo had all the power and anyone who was against him would be
In the novel, art is used in a way of protest towards Rafael Trujillo, who was the dictator of the Dominican Republic from February of 1930 until his assassination in May 1961. Minerva who is one of the Mirabel sisters, is in a religious school where she meets Sinita. Both of them are part of a play in which they win a recitation contest. Her group gets informed that they will go perform in the capital in front of Trujillo for his birthday. Minerva disagrees with Sinita on going to the capital and doing the play
What did Trujillo do that people didn’t like?Well for example sinita wanted to shoot Trujillo with the bow and arrow because he did bad things to Sinitas family member. Also it seemed like Trujillo was had unequal rights to women in the country because Maria Teresa was talking about Trujillo and his unequal rights” it 's about time we women had a voice running in this country”and it meant Trujillo didn’t like women to go beyond themselves in the country. Trujillo really did have much power and many people just wanted equal rights over it. For example Maria teresa wanted to have power as a women and go to law school and some day make a change around the
Trujillo had no respect for women, to him, and many other male characters in the novel, women were sex symbols. This type of behavior shows in how the narrator views women also in Oscar and his one sided relationships, INSERT QOUTE about YUNIER AND EXPLAINATION It is arguable that cultural lens is more relative in the book than that of the feminist lens. This perspective makes sense because in the book the dominican culture is very significant. The story of Oscar, the character whom the novel is about, is told through the voice of Yunior, the narrator.
Julia Alvarez’s In the Time of the Butterflies is a work of historical fiction set in the Dominican Republic that focuses on the four Mirabal sisters who bond together to rebel against the corrupt leader of their country, Rafael Trujillo. The four Mirabal sisters, Patria, Dedé, Minerva, and María Teresa form closer relationships with each other as they figure out a way to bring down the tyranny of Rafael Trujillo. Although they have a mutual goal, each of the Mirabal sisters has different feelings and thoughts throughout this time period. The theme of coming-of-age and identify is best exemplified through the character of María Teresa, known as Mate, through the ways she matures throughout the novel and becomes her own person who stands up for what she believes in.
When applying Marxist Criticism to the novel, readers can see that one way Trujillo is able to maintain his power is by convincing women to live in his homes. Trujillo owns many homes and has a woman live in each one. He uses his power to manipulate women to live secluded from their friends and family. The only thing that Trujillo gets out of doing this is having a fling, but he is able to show
For them, the cost of leaving everything behind is less important than not having freedom. Under Trujillo's rule, no one in the Dominican Republic was free. Papi and some of his friends have been planning on assassinating the dictator to ensure their families a life of freedom in the future. They end up going through with the plan, and when they come back, Mami asks him if it was appropriate to celebrate. “It is true Carmen, true, true, true.
However, the actions that the dictator commits here creates violence from his people who are not happy with how he rules. The story also says that after the dictator’s lonely death, no one misses him. Moreover the reality here is that the dictators in Latin America are selfish and greedy which create political violence within the nation, and Marquez applies these aspects in his writing to express this
