The book, Just Listen by Sarah Dessen starts off with, Annabel is going back to school with a best friend who hates her, a not so good personal secret, a modeling career that she no longer wants, and a family life that is going through tough times. Annabel meets Owen, her life starts to get slowly but surely better. He encourages her to tell the truth at all times and she becomes more comfortable adding in her own opinions. Annabel finds out that a former friend has went through the same things she has- Annabel freaks out with this information. She withdraws more and bails on Owen at the show because her head is spinning. The secret she is keeping sends her back to the difficult emotional way she was in the beginning of the story, and once again she is all alone. Clarke, (Annabel’s childhood best friend) reaches out and tells her to call her if she needs anything. Also, Annabel gets really close with her sisters, and realizes how much they all love each other. Annabel sees that she needs to apologize to Owen, so she goes to the radio station and tells him that she has listened to all the CDs he made for her. He is angry at first, but then she tells him about her family problems and secret. Owen says he is sorry and will go to the trial with her. In the end Annabel decides the best decision is to tell her parents and sisters her secret and that she is going to testify in the trial. They are understanding and do not freak out. In the realistic-fiction novel, Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, 14-year-old Melinda becomes a victim of rape at a summer party and begins to hide from herself to avoid the past. Within the novel Anderson uses the mirror as a motif to show Melinda’s growth from hiding from herself to defending herself. After Melinda’s assault, she calls the police while watching herself in the reflection of a window. “I saw my face in the window over the kitchen sink and no words came out of my mouth” (Anderson 136).

However, from a young age a person may not understand the issue until they grow into an adult. The author, Susan Perabo shows this to be especially true in her short story “The Payoff”. The use of the main characters Anne and Louise reveal how unwise a young mind can be in realizing the most simple of things. Laurie Halse Anderson’s realistic fiction book Speak depicts the life of Melinda Sordino, a 9th grader who called the police at a party after being raped and is now a social outcast. The pain from the memories of being raped keep her silent as she struggles through a powerful depression and the problems that go with being in high school. Anderson uses mirrors as a motif throughout the story to portray the stages of depression Melinda goes through. At the start of the story Melinda leads a very depressed hidden life; Anderson uses the mirror to represent this.
After reading Chapter 1 of “Through Deaf Eyes”. I was not surprised by the facts that were introduced in Chapter 1. Some of these things that were talked about and discussed I have experienced in my life as a deaf person with cochlear implants. "Do you lip read?
