Matthew Maury: “Pathfinder of the Seas”
“The Bible is true and science is true; and therefore, the truth of the other if truly read, proves the truth of the other. ” —Matthew Maury The field of oceanography has been constantly thriving since the 1500s. Since then, several men such as Aristotle, Benjamin Franklin, James Rennel, and Matthew Fontaine Maury have contributed their knowledge, studies, and inventions to aid in the development of navigation. Recent years, however, have brought new discoveries and more efficient methods. As oceanography continues to improve and new techniques emerge, it is crucial that all oceanographers realize the importance of their predecessors, using their research as a foundation but refining

This he proved in the speech he gave at the University of East Tennessee in November 30, 1860: “…The Bible is authority for everything it touches. The Bible is true and science is true, and therefore each, if truly read, but proves the truth of the other. The agents in the physical economy of our planet are ministers of Him who made both it and the Bible. The records which He has chosen to make through the agency of these ministers of His upon the crust of the earth are as true as the records which by the hands of His prophets and servants, He has been pleased to make in the Book of Life. They are both true; and when your men of science, with vain and hasty conceit, announce the discovery of disagreement between them, rely upon it, the fault is not with the witness of His records, but with the worm who essays to interpret evidence which he does not understand.”(Munday). Matthew Maury’s withstanding and distinguishing Christianity is what makes him a highly esteemed historical figure. Second, Matthew Maury is revered for his scientific writings. In the late 18th century, several people accepted God as the creator. However, when uniformitarianism and deism became popular, people grew embarrassed about mentioning God in scientific writings. Maury, on the other hand, did not get swept away with all …show more content…
He was considered “…the most internationally recognized scientist of his time, rivaling Ben Franklin in his own time” (Sells). Maury had realized that there were currents in the oceans, but not until later, did he set out to find them and map them in a simple chart. He discovered the Great Gulf Current, the Japanese Current, the California current, and many more. Through maps and discoveries, Maury’s organized system became popular around the world and was embraced by navies and sailors. They used this system to develop charts, and to reduce the length of the sea
INTRODUCTION The Cretaceous Period, spanning 65.5-146 million years ago (Mya), was a world different from what we are familiar with today. Planetary changes during this period included the extinction of dinosaurs and drastic global warming. The breakup of the super continent Pangea had started about 30 Mya, and seaways had begun to form and cover landmass that had once been a part of the super continent (Geologic Time). Today, scientists know that one of these landmasses, the North American continent as we now know it, was at one point covered by a vast inland sea known as the Western Interior Seaway.
Explorers now used the sextant, magnetic compass, and astrolabe to leave the sights of land, which, until this point, was unheard of. There were also new ships that were ready for such adventures. The caravel was one of them. It was a large, three masted cargo ship, with the newly invented triangular Lateen Sails.
Mapping out the ocean floor enabled to Ballard to observe where he should travel to in order for his trip underwater to be safe. He was able to map out the obstacles that could be in his way and disrupt his explorations. With the investigation of unknown species, Ballard was able to observe their lifestyles and extracted information that could be essential to his research besides the abandoned shipwrecks. “On one of his most famous expeditions, Dr. Ballard and a team of scientists traveled to the Galapagos Islands in 1977 and discovered hot springs on the ocean floor called hydrothermal vents” (Education through Exploration). The
December, 2004 In Indonesia was a tragic month Because a tsunami hit and killed many people, in addition to all of the deaths, the tsunami destroyed everything in meulaboh. The author Richard lewis wrote the book to tell and to simulate the tsunami in the killing sea with two new characters, ruslan who once collaborated with sarah to save her little brother, peter. In the book The Killing Sea by Richard Lewis, Ruslan and Sarah have different viewpoints about what makes a good family.
Inherit the Wind is a play inspired by real life events in Dayton, Tennessee in t 1925; “The Scopes Monkey Trial” where a teacher, John Scopes taught evolution to his students. Another character named Cates lecture on evolution because as a teacher, he feels he must teach what is actually and evidently true. Inherit the Wind formulates the arguments of both side of the issues of evolution and religion. The Monkey trial is in essence a drama over the educational validity of teaching science as science and of the teaching religious belief as a form of verifiable knowledge.
He tries to relate science and religion by proclaiming, “...the
Throughout this book the author, Darrel R. Falk, argues from his personal journey as a professing evangelical Christian and biologist, that only science, and not scripture, can reveal the details of creation. In the first chapter, the author talks about how, when one is living with both science and religion; it is like trying to live in two worlds at once. Falk spoke about how he grew up in a church that taught a literal view of Genesis, but those in leadership were not equipped to answer his questions about contradictions between the Bible and the real world. For this reason, Faulk drifted away from Christianity towards a life studying biology. Eventually he
Navigation was a big part of sailing across the big ocean to find something newer as referenced in document D. There were many ways to navigate in the ocean before gps’s were made, there were the stars, compasses , quadrant and maps, these weren’t all accurate but they had a sense in where they were looking for and going. Columbus used a quadrant on his
He points out that the Bible cannot be taken literally because sometimes it can be interpreted in different ways. The Bible was written for the common people and illiterate to understand, and to prove his point he mentions that the Bible gives God a body like ours while theologies believe God has no such features. He moves to his main point about who has the authority to determine what is true and untrue. He argues that what is scientifically proven will to understand the Bible true meaning.
Exploring the ocean could help people understand Earth better to.
“All of the true things I am about to tell you are shameless lies.” That is how Bokonon, the founder of Bokononism, says his religion is in Cat’s Cradle. For the people of San Lorenzo, this Bokononism a way for them to save them from the cruel science of the world. For others, this religion is nothing but lies and illusion. Yet, throughout Vonnegut's book, Cat’s Cradle, seemingly asks the question of whether or not science and religion are really separated or rather similar pieces to a puzzle.
Copernicus developed the heliocentric theory which claimed that the earth revolved around the sun. This immediately challenged the authorities who believed the opposite. Galileo furthered Copernicus’ argument and promoted that the Bible, that God
Charles Darwin was known to be one of the most honored and intelligent scientists of all man-kind. Darwin was famous for his theory that evolution explained biological change. Religion has been limiting the success of science for decades and Darwin’s theory of evolution was just one of many theories that also experienced these limitations. Religious theorists were torn between accepting Darwin’s theories of evolution and marking them completely impossible. Christianity was the biggest rejecter of Darwin’s theory of evolution and brought upon the most limitations to the famous theory.
These two historical but sacred pieces of writing also happen to show that there is an explicit conflict between religion and science. The Old Testament shows this as displaying the fact that a supernatural being created the natural world. According to Frederick Seller, this supernatural being acts “frequently to intervene in his creation, to make things act in contradiction to their natures.” The New Testament says that it is unscientific and that the world was created by a causally impossible events or miracles. Two examples of these miracles are Mary giving birth as a virgin and Jesus walking on water.
Historical knowledge and science provide a point where biblical and cultural stories collide (Goheen & Bartholomew, p. 130). Culture is communicated through common stories and events. Science or the human desire to explain what is seen can be identified within Greek mythology throughout history to the postmodern views of today. The Christian worldview provides a basis for belief in a creator, not dependent on human action continue existence (Goheen & Bartholomew, p. 23). Scientific exploration and discovery is a part of God’s creation.
