By doing this, an educator can gain insight as to how to better educate students by incorporating student’s interests into the classroom and curriculum. Mrs. Helgeson does an excellent job practicing this concept by giving her 3rd grade students a reading survey. This survey asks students if they like reading, what their reading interests are, what genres they enjoy, and what Mrs. Helgeson can do to help students become better readers. The results from the reading survey given to 15 of her 3rd graders gave abundant insight into how Mrs. Helgeson can effectively educate her students. The surveys revealed an even split between students who like to read and who sometimes like to read. When asked what they liked to read, a majority of students listed chapter books, specifically the Magic Tree House. When asked what genre student’s enjoyed to read, the most popular answers were: adventure, animals, fantasy, mystery, picture books, realistic fiction, and science fiction. Emergent self-knowledge of personal writing influences how approaches will be taken to develop writing skills in students. Utilisation of a writer’s journal enables emerging writers to understand relationships between the purpose of a journal activity and the intended audience (Bishop, 1996, p.34). Acknowledgement of self-emergence as a writer enables the author to include additional information into their work for clarity of the text, therefore enhancing that knowledge attained, ensuring the writer understands the importance of skills associated with writing polished pieces of writing. It is important for educators to have a refined understanding of language and how it works. Research shows the more understanding an educator has on developing writing skills in their students, the task involved will become less complicated, resulting in meaningful learning experiences for students (Loane & Muir, 2017, p. xviii).
Middle school often shows an increase teacher control and a curtailment of student freedom, as compared to elementary school. Finally, students are too often removed from the social support of teachers and are expected to compete rather than cooperate with each other in reading. To provide support for engaged reading,
I also agree with the fact that students will enjoy reading more if they are given a piece that interests them and have a great teacher that can provide input along they way. Having a great teacher is
They also appear to enjoy learning the content due to their involvement. The goal of this activity was to build students reading skills by working them through the subject and allowing them to discuss amongst each other any information that relates to the subject of the reading. It is also intended to help the students think as they read. This helped enable the students understand the subject of the reading, offer their own insight, and identify words more easily. This will also allow students to identify new words and will increase their ability with word identification and reading skills.
In order to do this “students need to produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience” and “develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, and editing” (NGA & CCSSO, 2010). The assignment does this. In addition, students are being asked to choose a favorite part of the story and use it as a basis for their writing which meets writing standards 7-9 that require students to build and present knowledge. Students need to have good background knowledge and comprehension of the story in order to do this. Lastly, writing standard 10 addresses writing range and having students write routinely over extended time frames where there is time for research, reflection, and revision to shorter time frames such as a single sitting or two for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.

Writing serves as a vehicle to transport one from any literacy myths they may be harboring. These literacy myths manifest in a multitude of ways such as “I am a terrible writer,” to “I am an excellent writer.” The truth is with literacy; it is not a fixed construct and is always in flux. Western Washington has a diverse and well trained group of writing centers. I was fortunate enough to be able to visit Central Washington University, Highline Community College, Shoreline Community College, Tacoma Community College and University of Washington Bothell . The goal was to find out what the writing centers are using for training, and how the centers operated. The four centers I visited, and the one center I interviewed, were extremely welcoming and have a diverse variety of extensive training programs. Observations of these writing centers enlightened me with an overwhelming amount of information.
In today’s society, there is an immense amount of young adults and teenagers who don’t enjoy reading as much as teens from the eighties. This may be because of the increase in technology starting from the beginning of the twenty-first century, or just because people choose not to read. One of the most evident reasons to why teenagers in this century have to force themselves to read is because of all the other distractions and things they would rather be doing than sit in complete silence, reading a book. This isn’t a cause for celebration, or a statement implying that reading is only for educational purposes and not the enjoyment, because it isn’t.
That is why I suggest that our community should have a “Reads Program”. This program will be supervised by our teachers from various schools and evaluated through interrelated school activities such as sports. Having a book club helps each reader to listen to others point of view. Allows others to meet new people. Makes reading fun and enjoyable and set examples for our younger ones.
