Will good parenting skills change a child’s bad behavior? Some people may say that to fix a child’s behavior parents should involve punishment. Maybe they will also say that punishment leads to having a well-disciplined child. In the article, “No Spanking, No Time-Out, No Problem,” Olga Khazan proposes a parenting intervention from a child psychologist, she utilizes it to persuade readers along with parents into believing that punishment cannot change negative behavior. Kazdin discusses the causes behind a negative behavior from a child and utilizes it to prove that punishment does not need to be utilized. Becoming a parent is a task that cannot be taken lightly. It is a task filled with frustration, responsibilities and dedication, but is also filled with joy and satisfaction. From children learning how to behave to them going out with friends, rules, standards and expectations are set mostly by their parents. Parents make most of their children’s decision in the first couple of years from behalf from what they eat for breakfast from setting their curfew as they get older. As children began grow, they began to make their own choices and learn to deal with the consequence of their mistakes. However, some parents will try to protect this process which can harm their child by them not accepting responsibility on their own. Every writer has a goal in mind when writing. For some that goal is to entertain, for others, it’s to educate. When writing, authors have many tools or tricks they use. One of the more common tools is rhetoric. There are three main components of a good rhetoric argument, ethos, pathos, and logos. Today I will be looking at several short videos and analyzing how the use of rhetoric persuades the audience.
Jacoby makes a convincing argument in “Bring Back Flogging” using ethos, logos, and pathos to persuade the reader into agreeing that flogging a convict would be better than jailing them. Using cited, reliable information helps build his logical argument and his credibility as a writer simultaneously. The three elements of rhetorical appeals were analyzed in Po Bronson’s article “Learning to Lie,” published February 10, 2008. In the article, Po Bronson uses rhetorical devices to persuade the reader that a reasonable one-third of teens lie to their parents. Bronson discusses about young kids learning to lie and what their causes may be. To better convey his points to the reader, Bronson uses the rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos is trying to convincing the audience and a persuader by trying to achieve credibility. Logos is the appeal of logic and reasoning, and lastly, pathos is using emotion to persuade the reader. Through these appeals, Bronson tries to address parents about their children lying, their causes and effects, and showing them what their children is capable of.
Persuasion is an art; and mastering this art requires the manipulation of the rhetorical triangles: ethos, pathos, and logos. “Ethos” deals with the credibility of the author; “pathos” refers to the emotional appeal of the text; and “logos” is the logics behind the argument; and these three fundamental appeals are the basis of persuasion. In the Introduction, Jay Heinrichs provides the reader with a foundation about the upcoming concepts on rhetoric, persuasion, seduction, and argument used in our everyday lives and in writing. Throughout this section, he discusses rhetoric that he encounters throughout life and without rhetoric it is merely impossible. He tries to go through a non rhetorical day, but it turns “out to be pretty darn rhetorical, but nonetheless agreeable” (11). Rhetoric prevents fighting, because without an agreement, people use fighting as a way of arguing. So, although people may see rhetoric as manipulation and/or seduction, it provides an agreement, within an otherwise violent, aggravating argument. With the use of rhetoric both sides can come to a consensus.
If families do not have some form of discipline inside of their household things would begin to get out of control and become chaotic. So some parents choose to use spankings as a form of discipline. I think that spanking is necessary in raising children. In my household spanking was enforced for my siblings and I when we were younger, it was to teach us what’s right from wrong. Spanking is a disciplinary action where children can learn from it. Many oppose spanking as a form of discipline because psychologists, therapist, counselors plus many others have researched the behavioral, psychological and emotional effects. Some have found that it can lead to depression, delinquency etc. I do not think that spankings cause negative affects because of studies and personal experience. Certain circumstance in the household along with spanking may lead to negative outcomes.
There are numerous persuasive devices that can be used as tricks in order to appear credible in the eyes of the audiences. There will be eight persuasive devices that will be mentioned in this analysis which are artistic proof which consist of ethos, logos and pathos, facts, repetition, positive dictions, analogy and rhetorical questions.
Rhetoric is defined as the art of persuasion using oral or written communications (Rapp). There are many theories and ideas which an orator or writer can use as tools to achieve their goal of persuading an audience. Spanking is a form of discipline that parents use towards their children when they are doing something that is deviant. However there are both pros and cons when it comes to spanking a child. A study done by Murray Strauss was conducted to see if spanking increased antisocial behavior in children. A total of 807 mothers, with children ages 6 to 9, were chosen in the study (Strauss, Sugarman, & Giles-Sims, 1997). The results showed that 45% of mothers that spank their children do it around 2.1 times a week (Strauss, Sugarman, & Giles-Sims, 1997). As the years progressed and the spanking continued, Antisocial Behavior tended to worsen as well. For many, spanking a kid is deemed to be one of the best ways to raise a kid. Since the previous generations, also known as the older generations were raised this mode, many accredit that applying the almost exact same method on their kids can lead these youngsters to learn and grow straight, therefore expecting that a spanked kid will aftermath in a prospective society with future gracefully informed and well educated adults. However, corporal punishments aren’t indeed the appropriate way neither the best solution to deal with the misbehavior of a little bairn.
First and most effective way of influence in young people’s behavior is giving a good example. There are cases when parents give their children negative examples by smoking, quarrelling, fighting and even beating each other in front of a child.
