Loss of Innocence In John Updike’s “A&P” and Toni Cade Bambara’s “The Lesson” the two authors illustrate difficult initiations teenagers face while they realize the harshness of society around them. Updike’s “A&P” explores the inner thoughts of a teenage boy, Sammy, who makes the tough decision to quit his job at the local A&P and realizes the bitterness of the world. Similarly, Bambara’s “The Lesson” explores the inner thoughts of a teenage girl, Sylvia, who realizes the value of money and clash of social classes through a field trip to a toy store. One Child by Torey Hayden was the account of a special education teacher’s (Hayden) six-month experience with Sheila, a six-year-old with emotional disturbance. In November of the previous year, Sheila kidnapped a three-year-old boy from her neighborhood, tied him to a tree, and burned him. Due to the nature of her crime, that state committed Sheila to the psychiatric hospital. She joined Hayden’s classroom in January; the state using the classroom as a placeholder for Shelia until a spot opened up at the state psychiatric hospital.
In addition, what the author had claimed about school faculty not helping a “problem child” such as Jessica because they did not have time to is absurd; no wonder why the youth turn to gang life because they see that there is no one else to guide
The main focus of this book is around a girl named Jadie (Jade) who keeps on talking about all of these weird things while Torey is trying to help. The story begins with Torey driving over from the city, and where she used to live, over to a small town called Pecking because she accepted a job as a teacher for disabled students. She gets there and gets set up and ready to meet the children. The principal stops by and introduces the kids to Torey. The first child to arrive is a boy named Reuben who has autism.
The book One Child by Torey Hayden was an excellent story told by a truly compassionate and caring educator. You could tell as you were reading the book that Torey had a heart for special education and emotionally disturbed children. She established her credibility from the beginning and kept me engaged in the story and locked on the story of Sheila’s life and educational journey. This story changed my views on the challenges of special education and melted the stereotypes that educators sometimes accuse special educators of proving them to be true.

Worst Case by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge is a crime, action, thriller book which is appropriate for a school setting because it addresses ethical and social injustice which happens throughout the world and how modern society accepts basic utilities for granted. Also, the storyline is full of action and suspense which are appealing to adolescents. Finally, the story addresses how society should conquer any task, despite the difficulty. Initially, the novel is appropriate for a school setting because the antagonist of the book, Francis Mooney, explains “how messed up [the world] is” and how “greed and rampant injustice” poisons society (Patterson 40).
One Child was a story about a six-year-old child by the name of Sheila. Sheila was a lost, wild and neglected individual, until she was placed in Torey Hayden’s classroom. Her mother abandoned her on the side of the road and took off with Sheila’s brother. This incident has left such an impeccable mark on Sheila’s heart and mind. This left her with her father, who tolerates her and spanks her to make her into a “better child”.
