The article I have chosen was written by Helen Pilcher and is about evolution of creatures, especially for primates. However, until now, what do our very first primates were like still remain mysterious as we do not have sufficient information and evidences which are 60 million years ago. Yet, we still cannot deny that evolution occurs in creatures. No matter for humans, animals or plants, all of them will make changes because of their living habits and environment in order to survive. Animals who are able to surpass these barriers are able to receive our empathy and their rights, but in Jeremy Rifkin’s, “A Change of Heart About Animals,” he talks ideas about all animals should receive our empathy for great acts of the few. The individual animal receive its equal rights, not by a single entity achieving it for the mass, but by the individual must showing intelligences, emotions and feelings, and most importantly, the ability to co-exist with others; including human and other animals alike. An animal must show intelligences, the ability to communicate, solve problems, and follow simple instructions. Although some may think of metaphor as ornamental and inapplicable for use in subjects other than English literature, metaphors are necessary for communication in all fields. The use of metaphor is especially crucial in the field of education, where students cannot be taught without the use of metaphor because one cannot understand completely new ideas without making a connection to previously known information (Reddy). This was a very important paper and it helped me get a glimpse of how life used to be. But it also is kind of how public school are today this day and I wonder if the Scopes Monkey trial had some kind of effect on that to this day. The primate observation that I chose to observe are Orangutan, Squirrel Monkey, and Lemur. This observation took place in the Lowry Park Zoo on October 18th. I went to the Lowry Park Zoo around 2 pm until 5 pm. The purpose of this observation is through primate’s anatomy, locomotion, and behavior to getting know them better, and how they are differences and similarities compare to human beings. When I got there, the Zoo was already very crowd.
Due to the intellectual level of primates there parenting skills differ from other mammals. Primates birth fewer off spring than other mammals because there births are spaced out over time to account for teaching and nurturing the newborns. Primates tend to take much better care of there infants with mothering qualities due to there intelligence which is far different than other mammals who sometimes give birth and leave there young. Our book discusses how this rapid temperature increase created tropical weather conditions all across the globe. As a result, new habits were created and there was "an adaptive radiation of modern-appearing primates, the euprimates" (Larsen 260). In other words, the high global temperatures paired with the humidity let to the spread of tropical forests.
Humans have been examining and studying non-human primates for ages in an attempt to further understand the reasoning behind human behavior and base instinct. While it would be ideal to study non-human primates in the wild, away from possible interference from human civilization, that is often not the case, especially for students, and in this case the non-human primates have been observed within captivity. While this is a plausible objection, it fails, because Machan’s argument doesn’t attribute rights to just moral agents, his argument attributes rights specifically to all humans. Machan constructs his argument on the basis that rights are attributed to species or kinds, not by individuals. He makes it clear that this is the correct way to attribute rights by his examination of nature’s hierarchy. He describes that kinds of things are what are judged on a similar basis.
Animal rights activist, Jane Goodall, in her persuasive essay, “I Acknowledge Mine” tells about how terrible chimpanzees are treated in a biomedical research laboratory. Goodall’s purpose is to try to encourage change in the laboratory because she thinks that they shouldn’t be tested on just like humans aren’t being tested on. She adopts a somber tone in order to appeal to the audiences’ ethical or moral values regarding animal treatment. Goodall effectively uses all three rhetorical strategies-- ethos, logos, and pathos-- to educate the audience regarding the harsh reality of animal testing around the world and to convince the audience that this cruel testing should be stopped.
In human history, a number of oppressed groups have campaigned for equality, demanding for an expansion on the moral view of life, and to be treated fairly in the eye of consideration. This means that when the matter concerns this group, their voices are heard, and treated with value, and consideration. Where this equality is not determined by an assembly of facts like that group’s collective intelligence level, the colour of their skin, or the physical strength of their bodies. This is what Peter Singer brings up in his essay: “All Animals are Equal”, that non-human animals should have equal consideration with humans when matters concern them. Going into a specific set of non-human animals known as primates, I argue that primates should have some of the fundamental rights and equal consideration that are given to humans.
Animals and humans share more in common than you think. Although we don't necessarily look the same, we share the same emotions. Including happiness, sadness and many other traits. Other than emotions animals can act similar to humans as well. For example, animals may show that their scared by hiding or running away just like humans.

Studying captive primates can help us learn not only how they behave, but also how they are similar or different to each other and humans as well as give us insight into the effects of captivity. This paper will be describing, comparing, and contrasting the behavior of two species of captive primates at the Alexandria Zoo, golden lion tamarins and howler monkeys, as well as discussing the possible effects captivity could have had on them. This paper will also discuss any human-like behaviors observed in the two primate species and what we as humans could learn about our own behavior by studying primates.
