Is it difficult to tell whether someone is guilty or innocent? In the story of Serial narrated by Sarah Koenig is about a murder case that happened on January 13 1999. This murder happened with a girl named Hae Min Lee and supposedly her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed happened to commit the murder. Adnan was proven guilty and arrested months later. But, there is news popping up that he has a new trial that will either have him stay in prison, or let him him out. After investigating, it is clear that Adnan is innocent because he has an alibi, he had no idea where Leakin Park was, and his behavior wasn’t strange. First of all, Adnan is innocent because he had an alibi from a girl named Asia. In Asia’s explanation of what happened that day she states, …show more content…
In the story, Sarah Koenig interview one of Hae’s friends and she explains that, “I think it was probably mostly normal, but things that, like, he kinda just always generally annoyed me, because, just the constant paging her if she was out, um, and he’s like, “Well I just wanted to know where you were.” And it’s like, “I told you where I was gonna be.” Um, if she was at my house, and we were having a girls night, he would stop by, like he would walk over and try to come hang out, and its just like, “Have some space!” Um, and it’s one of those things, at first it’s like, “Oh! It’s so cute! Your boyfriend’s dropping by.” But then the tenth time, it’s like, “Really?” (Episode 1, Page 31.) Here, it is one of Hae’s friends states that he was really over possessive while they were together. He would constantly check up on her even though she told him where she was going. Adnan seems really not trustworthy of Hae and doesn’t want her anywhere without him. So, if he killed Hae it was out of jealousy since she had found a new love interest. However, Adnan is innocent because right after the break up he began to date multiple girls. While Saad was talking to Sarah she said, “When they had broke up, Adnan and Hae had broke up, it'd been like a month, maybe more. She had already started dating another guy, and I was like, “Adnan's dating multiple girls!” I was like “I can tell you some of the girls that he's dating.” I was like “he is not upset about him and Hae breaking up.” (Episode 2, Pg. 38) This proves that he is innocent because Saad clearly says that he wasn’t overprotective. He was dating multiple girls after the break up. Usually, people date other people once they are over their ex. Therefore, Adnan is innocent because of the murder because
Therefore, it’s perfectly logical that Adnan can’t remember much about that day, even weeks later. Most importantly, both teens had alibis for January 13th at 2:36pm. Clearly, Adnan couldn’t have killed Hae that day. Next, while the jury does eventually rule in favor of the prosecution, when the state’s evidence is brought to light, it crumbles under the pressure.
Jay Wilds was the state’s main, and only, witness. He says that Adnan killed Hae and then he called Jay from a phone booth outside of a Best Buy to show him the body and to ask him what to do. Afterwards, they both drive around a bit, get high, drive some more, bury Hae together, and then drive back home. There is even cellphone evidence to support Jay’s story. This all seems bad for Adnan until you look deeper into Jay’s story.
Adnan Syed is innocent. He did not murder Hae Min Lee. The reasons Adnan was wrongly convicted is: Adnan has consistently maintained innocence, Jay’s story is in consistent, the call tracking isn’t reliable, the Asia affidavit proves otherwise, post mortem results of Hae’s body debunked the states story, and people who knew Adnan and Hae said the break up wasn’t messy. In summary, Adnan is innocent. Adnan had been in captivity for almost 15 years.
Sarah states, “ If I’m Adnan and I need to be seen for track, I’m freaking out right now, that I need to get back for track to have an alibi.” “But, it is possible. Or at least not impossible, which was what Adnan was saying in that first letter.” These quotes explain Adnan is innocent because if he had killed Hae before Jay said they went to the park to smoke weed, why would Adnan want to go far from school if he knew he had a track practice to go to? The route Jay was explaining could have been possible, but everything had to have been the right time and right movements to prove it.
Shifting to Adnan now, if he really committed the crime one would think that he would remember more of the day other than going about his day as usual and then of course panicking because his ex girlfriend who was also one of his best friends was missing and he cannot do anything that would help find her would you not think? This puts Adnan in a very
They never used his alibi Asia, stating that he was in the library during the time of the murder. The DNA found on Haes Lee's body was never tested, because it cost to much to do so. The lack of evidence was a big issue with the case. Looking back the only thing the state had on Adnan was Jay's stories. Jay is not a very reliable source.
It was his word alone that suggested that Adnan wanted Hae dead. Not a single person thought this, not Hae, not their family, not their friends and not even anyone at school. The only problem here is that Adnan doesn't seem to remember exactly where or what he was doing that day. Who could blame him though, we can’t even remember what we eat the other day. He had to remember something that happened 15 years ago and although it was a big memory something so simple as smoking weed, could cause someone to forget what they did.
The court and others may argue that Adnan and Hae’s past relationship is enough for Adnan to be convicted. Adnan lived in a Muslim home were dating was forbidden, but he pushed all of that away to date Hae. Adnan and Hae dated for a while, and then they had a tragic breakup. Adnan was angry and had the motive to kill Hae after he sacrificed his whole life to be with Hae; this is what the court says about
She describes him as the “sweetest and kindest person ever.” Some people may argue that as a result of the teenage breakup, that probably Adnan murdered Hae Lee out of spite. This is very unlikely. (Berg) We see again in the Serial podcast that Adnan had told Sarah Koenig that he still cared about Hae, even though they broke up. One instance that shows this is when Hae had some issue with her car, and Adnan had come over to help her.
Have you ever had a fight with your siblings because they accused you of breaking something in the house? How would you feel if it wasn’t just breaking something small in the house, but rather the killing of another person? In the Serial podcast, an 18 year old high school Muslim boy, Adnan, was accused of murdering his Korean ex-girlfriend, Hae. His accuser was his 19 year old friend, Jay. Serial goes through the alibis that were presented and weren’t present at the trial.
If a person is convicted of a murder, why wouldn’t he be trying to defend their case? Adnan Syed is guilty of Hae Min Lee’s murder. On January 13, 1999, Hae Min Lee, a popular high school senior, disappeared and was found dead. Six weeks later, Adnan Syed, Hae’s ex-boyfriend, was found guilty of her murder. He claims to be innocent but there is evidence to prove that he was guilty.
Adnan is Innocent Do you remember what you did on this day, exactly one week ago? You might remember some things about that day, or you might remember nothing. How about if I asked what you did 6 weeks ago on this day? Could you tell me?
Putting these circumstances aside, it was said by many that the relationship was pretty typical and Adnan got over the breakup easily. This was said by teachers and friends of both Hae and Adnan. One of Hae’s friends, Becky, explained the relationship as “just a silly, teenage, high school, relationship” (Koenig “The Breakup”) which proves that Adnan was not as upset as the prosecution made him out to be at trial. Another notable aspect is that after Hae and Adnan broke up, Hae got in a small car accident and asked Adnan to come help her, her new boyfriend Don also showed up and confirms that him and Adnan had a cordial meeting and explains that they talked for 10 to 15 minutes even after the car situation had been figured out (Koenig “What We Know”). If Adnan was really that broken up about the breakup, he would not have been so friendly towards the new guy who seemed to take his place in Hae’s life.
This proves that Adnan was the one who killed her. Jay and Adnan both committed a serious crime. Adnan killed Hae with the help from
Of course, many people think Adnan Syed is guilty of murdering Hae by contradicting himself, by saying, “I am in here for my own mistakes.” He might have been on the edge of confessing his guilt until Sarah caught this and asked what he meant, and quickly recovers from his mistake. Adnan also slips his tongue by saying that he wants people to only look at the evidence, and not his personality. If I were convicted of a crime I would certainly like to have my personality be looked at, if I were innocent. So they could see what good I have done.
