Although she had been averse to the project given to her, she gradually began to like it. It was the only class she actually tried her best at, as an outlet to express herself, even if it was just the slightest bit. Over the next couple weeks, Melinda started to eat lunch with Heather and went on a couple trips to Heather’s home. The two formed an unhealthy friendship where Heather did about 90 percent of the talking, as she was much more social then Melinda. She wanted to be popular, however, which meant joining a one of the many cliques of high school.
It is estimated that 1 in 6 women will be a victim of attempted or completed rape, however, only 16-40% of all rape is reported. In the realistic-fiction novel, Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, 14-year-old Melinda becomes a victim of rape at a summer party and begins to hide from herself to avoid the past. Within the novel Anderson uses the mirror as a motif to show Melinda’s growth from hiding from herself to defending herself. After Melinda’s assault, she calls the police while watching herself in the reflection of a window. “I saw my face in the window over the kitchen sink and no words came out of my mouth” (Anderson 136).
High school, it’s a necessary part of life, yet no one wants to be in it. This is the case and more for freshman Melinda. Melinda is the protagonist in the book Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson. She is going through a very rough time that she is having trouble dealing with on her own. Before her freshman year of high school she was raped at a party, no one knew that this happened.
She doesn’t realize that the easier way out is the hardest way to live. In the meantime, Giles takes responsibility of mentioning Martha and takes his life for his family to preserve their lives. This is of importance because illustrates how protective or careless one is about family, or even close friends. Even though someone says that they do not care about status, they truly do. People will talk until the day you die, regardless of what you do.
After reading Laurie Halse Anderson Laurie Halse Anderson book named Speck we hear the story about Melinda’s journey through her first year of high school. Through the first year, she has confronted the fact that she was raped by Andy by having to summon the strength to fight back and speak up exposing him to the school. In the story, we watch Melinda's interactions with other characters and how the book seems to paint the character's as one-sided, but in the movie, it paints them in a realistic light. So I feel like the book failed in being realistic with how her peers, parental figures are portrayed and how Melinda is hard to sympathize with .
Speak, the story of Melinda Sordino, the girl without a voice. In speak the main protagonist, Melinda, has to go through high school with almost everyone in her school hating her because of a misunderstanding, she called the police on a summer party because she was sexually assaulted but never had the courage to say anything. Throughout the book the writer, Laurie Anderson uses trees to symbolize changes in Melinda’s life like (insert thing here), how Melinda needs to remove the “dead branches” from her life so she can move on and grow from her experiences, and how Melinda was finally able to “cut the dead branches” from her life and learn to speak up for herself. A good example of Melinda’s transformation is shown in this next quote. “He’s

The main character, Melinda has to deal with the feeling of betrayal and loneliness as all the people who she grew up with, shared unforgettable memories with and the people she thought would never leave her side now backstabbing her and making her feel like she isn’t worthy to live. Melinda “responds” to this problem by ignoring everyone and becoming isolated so that no one would approach her and ever hurt her ever again. I would advice Melinda to try and go up to her friends and let them know what really happened. As they say “in the end we only regret the chances we didn’t take”. It’s better for Melinda to at least try and talk to her friends, because they may have been true friends all along there just may have been a misunderstanding.
There are people in our lives who have helped us grow. In the summer before freshman year in high school Melinda Sordino was raped at a party. After calling the police she was left without friends or dignity. She isolates herself not knowing what to do. In Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, Melinda grows in many ways throughout the book.
In Laurie Halse Anderson’s novel, Speak, Melinda is a dynamic character whose behaviors, thoughts, and words change and reflect the theme of the novel, not to keep ones emotions bottled up. First, Melinda acts in a shy and quiet manner because she had got her friends into trouble when she called the cops at the party. However when Melinda begins to make her own choicesfor herself and not let her emotions get to her, she realizes she will not let other people make her own descions. This is evident when Anderson writes “I mean no I won`t help you” (Anderson 179). This shows how Melinda will not be walked on by her peers.
Speak is a realistic fiction book written by Laurie Halse Anderson. It is a national book award finalist published by Square Fish Publications. Speak is a book that many adolescent girl readers can relate to. It allows readers to walk through freshman year with Melinda, and follow the conflicts she is facing. After spending her day working at the coffee shop, Laura was heading home to get ready for her very first concert. She loved her job, she worked with her best friend LaFontaine, who happened to be a manager. Although the job is fairly easy, today was kind of hectic, so this concert is something she really needs to calm herself down. Betty went home for the weekend and Kirsch had plans with S.J., so she was stuck going by herself. It was about time that Laura broke loose from her overprotective father’s rules, where she had to go everywhere with a friend and to bring her day of the week bear spray with her.
