Question: 1 Alexandra Robbins wrote the Overachievers intending to make people aware of how stress on high school students has changed our education system. She wanted people to understand how stress on high school students affects their health and attitude. The Overachievers was written specifically towards students, educators, and counselors. Robbins proposes a solution to help limit the harmful effects of stress of students. The appeals are used to persuade the reader to see the students stress from her point of view. This was done to convey the thoughts of the students how they would talk naturally to each other. The run- on’s we placed to establish a stream of consciousness writing style in the mind of the students at Whitman. Rhetorical questions were used to help give an understanding to the students expect perspective of thought and how they would talk to themselves in the situations. In the article, “College Pressures,” William Zinsser discusses the many struggles college students face while trying to focus on their studying. He convinces the reader of his point by using different types of rhetorical strategies. Zinsser’s usage of the rhetorical strategies such as getting straight to the point, quoting, paragraphing, the use of word pictures, and choosing a title was effectively done in his article to persuade his reader of the struggles faced by college students. The author did not waste anytime getting to the main point in his article, which is effective because it makes me interested in what he had to say.

Do students have too much on their plate? Most students have a lot going on in their life. They play sports, have a job, and have school with some AP classes. This could be the cause of grades dropping, developing anxiety and being depressed. In Vicki Abeles essay, “Workaholic Students”, she uses ethos and logos in order to persuade her readers that students have too much going on, causing them to be overwhelmed and grades to drop.
My considered response is on the poem, “Did I Miss Anything?” by Tom Wayman. This poem is about a teacher that is answering the question, “did I miss anything”. The teacher does answer the question; however they do it in a roundabout, overly sarcastic and exaggerated manner. The teacher shifts from saying they did nothing while the student was absent to saying that they did everything in the next stanza. In my considered response I will explain the poetic devices I found in the poem.
In “College Pressures” by William Zinsser, leader of one of the residential colleges at Yale University, the author describes the different amount of pressures that students struggle with in college. Because of his position at the university, he constantly noticed the students around him and the anxiety that was radiating off them. He believes that economic pressures cause students to feel anxious about paying back student loans after college. However, parental pressure leads students to make decisions that their parents would be happy with because of the feeling of guilt and wanting to please them.
