Human sexuality is used in scripture as a metaphor of Jesus’ love for his church and God’s love for his people. Many Catholic individuals believe that erotic desire is “good, virtuous, and beautiful” (56). For example, in a series of poems found in the Song of Songs, passion between unmarried people is presented. In addition, sexuality is present in all art forms. In his sculpture, “The Ecstasy of St. Teresa”, Bernini depicts Saint
The gestures of Virgin Mary and Saint John give them further purpose and reason to be portrayed in the image. In a way, the Justinian aspects highlight the interaction between all three figures and introduces a Classical-styled artistic theme of human interaction that can be felt by the viewers. Jesus’ head is bowed, body is slumped, and eyes are positioned downward. Initially, I thought he was just looking down at the skull but then I thought maybe Jesus is looking towards Virgin Mary and Saint John. As the son of Virgin Mary, who would care for her when He was gone? Hence, Jesus is putting trust in Saint John to care for His mother after He is crucified. The combination of the Classical human reaction, Justinian’s supple gestures, and reverse perspective conveys an emotion in the mosaic that differ from the actual biblical event. This unique interpretation of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ portrays Him as vulnerable, helpless, and concerned, instead of the original characteristics of strong-willed, powerful, wise, and willing the
My picture is a photograph that I believe is meant to convince. The intended audience I believe is those of the Christian faith, especially the modern day “Cafeteria Catholics”. I say this because it would not be aimed at someone who simply does not believe, was not raised, or does not take part in the religion at all. However, it would not be aimed at someone who is strong in their beliefs. It is for many religious people in today society, who claim to believe, go to church on Christmas, but don 't really care. Instead of reading the bible, they log onto Facebook. Instead of saying a prayer before we sleep, we listen to our favorite song to sleep. Instead of spending time with god, we log onto twitter and spend time
It have two angels next to him. During that time, Saints were highly recognized and play a significant part in all social group and class. Therefore, this painting shows how important Saint and religion were during that time. This painting also suggests that Saint Francis is big and mighty. In addition, the angels give an image that Saint Francis is protection. The painting appears to have levels of designs on both side of Saint Francis, giving impression of a library. This indicated to me and others that the teaching of religion is central to all group and class. Saint Francis is the main focus and the details shows his work during at time. (Finkelstien)
Ansel Adams stated, “A great photograph is a full expression of what one feels about what is being photographed in the deepest sense and is, thereby, a true expression of what one feels about life in its entirety.” Have you ever wonder where photography first started? Have you ever wondered who made photography what it is today? What type of impact particular photographers had on photography? Alfred Stieglitz was a man who had big aspirations in his lifetime but did it so easily in with coming from a wealthy family. Alfred Stieglitz was one who changed modern photography and helped make it what it is today ("Alfred Stieglitz."). Alfred was a photographer, a gallerist, an impresario, and a publisher ("Alfred Stieglitz."). Who were Stieglitz
In Viramontes’ novel Under the Feet of Jesus, the author composes symbolic representations about the daily life of a migrant worker. Symbols used throughout the novel was the barn as a figure to represent a church, Petra’s statue of Jesus that symbolized her faith in Christianity and the baby doll with no mouth that represented the views on silence. The author uses symbolism to get her message across on how the difficulties of migrant workers. The symbols, the barn, Jesus statue, and the baby with no mouth represent the migrant workers’ stance on faith.
Christ with the Symbols of the Passion is a work by Italian painter Lavinia Fontana, its medium is oil on panel and it was executed on 1576. In this piece we see, what seems to be, Christ after he was brought down from the cross. He is sitting at the center of the piece with multiple angels besides him. The color palette seems dark and obscure as well as the overall mood of the piece. He is surrounded by symbols that are significant to the process of His crucifixion such as the cross, the crown of thorns, a whip, and is also surrounded by three angels. This painting is an accurate representation of Italian Mannerist style, and has all the characteristics that defines it as so.
Each element in the creation of the sculptures was used to effect the viewer in a spiritual manner; the faithful would be able to recognize, at first glance, the chance for miracles, the chance for salvation. One such type of sculpture is that of shrine figures and small-scale statues. Because of their size, they are portable. The devoted could go on long journeys and carry their faith with them as the Holy Family did on their flight to Egypt. The Metropolitan shrine figure is 14 1/2 x 5 x 5 1/8 inches when closed. This indicates that at least two hands would be needed to hold it. Because of this intimacy, the viewer’s experience changes, “access to the interior is achieved only by touching the sculptures, making the viewer's experience both haptic as well as optic, as handling is necessary in order to view the figure's interior.” The viewer is unable to be passive if he or she wants to obtain the secrets within the
The painting has asymmetrical because the weight on each side is uneven. Mary is much bigger than baby Jesus. The dominate design in the painting would be Mary’s face. Mary’s face is key focus; it draws your attention to see what is next. But, Mary’s hands also take domination because in early painting Mary is barely holding on to Jesus, he is just floating above her lap, but in this painting you can tell the grip Mary has on Jesus. Although Mary’s hand and body itself take up an odd amount of room they help objects such as baby Jesus stand in the painting as well. This painting has a certain movement it creates the gesture of a baby pulling his mother closer to him has he lays his cheek on his mother. The shape used is that of a circular motion. Dieric Bouts create a sense of harmony and wholeness using the same color, skin tone between Mary and Jesus create harmony. You can tell the contrast between the two people Mary symbolizes royalty being the mother of Jesus which, is why she wears blue. Blue symbolizes royalty. Jesus symbolizes purity, which is why he has white on. White is the color of purity. Against Mary and Jesus’ pale skin the makes the color of their clothes pops. Art work has many different moods. The mood of this painting is nurturing and humble. The painting is more life like the any other portrait of Mary and Jesus because Jesus does not have a halo on his head and his
In the speech from Shakespeare’s play “Henry VIII”, Shakespeare uses a few literary devices to help understand Wolsey’s response regarding his release from court. Using literary devices helps the person reading gain more of an insight of the characters emotions. Wolsey’s character shows both anger and acceptance when he attempts to come to realization of what just happened to him. Shakespeare shows both feelings by using figurative language, tone, and allusion throughout Wolsey’s speech.
Jan van Eyck made an impression with me when we covered him and class and The Portrait of a Man in a Red Turban is one of my favorites as well. I chose this one mainly because of how busy these paintings are as well as the contrast between the left and right on the right panel. The more I researched Crucifixion; The Last Judgment, the more interested I became. According to the Met Museum, the Crucifixion panel is presented as a first hand account. The left panel seems to have three different scene in one, starting from the top down. The top portion shows Jesus be crucified along with who I believe are the two these the gospels mention Jesus be crucified with. The top portion of the panel doesn 't show much detail in the background. This brings the attention forward to Jesus and then the two thieves. Jesus is the only one that facing the viewer straight forward everyone else is turned away at an angle. The bottom shows two clusters of people. The ones closer to the crucifixion seem to be all men. These men seem unfazed but the crucifixions taking place. The second grouping of people consist of women, with the Virgin Marry among them. I believe that Marry is the women in the blue robe, surrounded by three women that also seem to be grieving the loss with her. I believe that Marry is the women in blue because in class we learned she 's almost always in a blue robe. The robe covers most of her body and
One-point linear perspective is used with God as the vanishing point. Your eyes cannot help but to follow the looks that ascend upwards. The chiaroscuro shows the darkness and shadows on the earth and gets lighter towards Heaven. The apostles are wearing complementary colors of red and green on their clothes. The clouds are fluffy and white with shadows of gray. The higher sky is a yellow-orange with hues of gold. The red, yellow, and orange shows the warmth in the painting. Whereas the paler blue sky at the bottom show a cooler temperature. The Assumption and Consecration of the Virgin is polychromatic with its variety of color. This painting is an example of iconography. It is widely understood by the Christian culture. Mary was an important figure in biblical times. She carried Jesus though she was a virgin. She was a faithful servant to God. The apostles followed Jesus who died for all sins. God is ruler and protector of all. He watches over all of mankind. Many people worship Him and appreciate pieces of art that play a role in religion. This is an aesthetically beautiful painting that had a big part in the Italian

Bluemoon Acres has posted an image on their website of a pair of hands each full of rural and urban soil. While scrolling through Google, this picture has the ability to catch the eyes of those who are involved in programs such as the National FFA Organization and 4-H, most members can recognize the difference between the two types of soil. Not only is the focal point eye catching the color scheme could be considered vibrant and contrasting which may create interest in the image. The appealing colors and relatable subject constructs an attention-getting ethos and pathos argument. However, the lack of statistics and other numbers show a lack of a logos argument within this image.
Through the cultural frame art may be thought to be about giving insight on how an artwork is influenced by the values of the society it is produced in, and, in turn, how the artwork influences the values of the society. Plate 1, Corpse in Barbed Wire (Flanders) is a German Expressionist etching by Otto Dix, German Expressionism is the when an artist depicts subjective emotions and responses to objects and events, rather than objective reality. In Plate 1 Dix uses colour and tone to depict his inner emotions and express the devastating effects on society during World War I. Ultimately, Plate 1 represents and documents cultural histories by giving first hand insight
