Samuel Seium. I enjoyed the part where the author encourages thinking outside of the box when developing ideas and solutions. When you think inside the box then the only ideas and solutions that you can develop will have to come from inside the box. However, if you think outside of the box then you can develop new and different ideas outside of the box that has not been tried before. This encourages me to think outside the box and encourage the community members to also think outside the box when dealing with social justice issues. For example, I can ask the community what they have done before to help solve their current issues and then we can brainstorm new ideas, which will be lead by the community. As a social justice counselor, helping the community facilitate news ideas will be important if their past ideas were unsuccessful. …show more content…
Oppression by the oppressors is also used at an economic level as well. For example, African slaves were originally seen as an economic stimulus and not an inferior group when they first arrived in the new world. However, that clearly changed over a short time period. Additionally, businesses take advantage of undocumented workers in order to gain a profit and get an advantage over the competition. In monolithic societies, they have the haves and have-nots and the oppressors oppress based on economic reasons as
Sinclair compares slavery to immigrant workers of Packingtown. The immigrants lose their power of agency and self-sufficiency because of economic powersthat they cannot control. Corrupt capitalists and politicians control the economy. They pay low wages and then con immigrants out of these wages with poor quality goods and overpriced services. immigrants often do not understand the culture or language, they have no way to guard themselves against such abuse.
Slavery had a key role in the cultures of Muslim and European people. The documents provided, after being analyzed, tell that the thoughts about slavery from each culture were different. The documents also state that the reasons for the differences in the opinions about slavery were because of religions and basic cultural ideals. Nevertheless, there were some similarities between their slavery. One of the most important is the social status of the slaves.
One of the main themes of Worlds Together Worlds Apart is no matter what culture a group of people is a part of each community has the goal of expanding their wealth through trade. This desire for wealth and exotic goods has led multiple civilizations to carry out atrocities against other people just to satisfy their lust for riches. One of the most common ways dominant civilizations would oppress the unfortunate was through slavery. As populations grew from the late sixteenth to the nineteenth century demand for more goods increased which meant there needed to be more cheap labor. This cheap labor was found in Africa and resulted in the transportation of around 12 million Africans from their home land to the Americas.
The Atlantic Slave Trade is remembered as a dark and cruel point in history, in which African Americans were treated as animals by inhuman and cruel men. During this time period the ideal shared by many white men was that of white supremacy, meaning that people with white skin are naturally better than those with dark skin. They also believed that it was their worldly duty to care for people with black skin. However, the majority of these men did not care for those they viewed as their subordinates. These cruel men viewed the black race as inhuman, however, it was those who had white skin that were the real inhumans, they were beasts.
The term conjugated oppression is “… ethnicity and class work together to produce an oppression experientially and materially different from that produced by either alone” (pg 50). Holmes noticed after a few weeks of picking at the Tanaka Farm that those who are in power has to do with their race, class, and citizenship. An example of how class affects migrant workers is that several of them “... have increased incidence of acute sickness such as urinary tract and kidney infections, heat stroke, anthrax, ascariasis… which are believed to be caused in large part by poor living and working conditions and lack of sanitary bathrooms” (pg 101). Countless of the migrant workers are not only affected by the working conditions, nonetheless by their living
The use of slaves has always been present in the world since the beginning of civilization, although the use and treatment of those slaves has differed widely through time and geographic location. Different geographies call for different types of work ranging from labor-intensive sugar cultivation and production in the tropics to household help in less agriculturally intensive areas. In addition to time and space, the mindsets and beliefs of the people in those areas affect how the slaves will be treated and how “human” those slaves will be perceived to be. In the Early Modern Era, the two main locations where slaves were used most extensively were the European dominated Americas and the Muslim Empires. The American slavery system and the
A grotesque entry in an early Encyclopedia britannica is a gruesome example of this: “They are strangers to every sentiment of compassion, and are an awful example of the corruption of man when left to himself”. (Doc 20). Also they are rudely categorized as everything inhuman in almost every twisted document about them--as you can see in an essay by Immanuel Kant (Doc 19). Finally though, an act to abolish the slave trade was put in place in 1807, and though it did not outlaw slavery in the colonies, it did stop the kidnapping and bringing overseas of blacks to the Americas (Doc 21). A step in the right direction.
A historical example of this includes slavery, slavery is the act of owning someone as property without their consent. The rich owned slaves to do work, such as tending to crops, housework or other labor. However, document one, show that one group has more rights or power than another group based on their church. According to this primary source, "It was agreed and concluded as a foundamentall order nott to be disputed or questioned hereafter, thatt be admitted to be free burgesses in any of the plantations within this jurisdiction for furture, butt such planters as are members of some or
For instance, it could be time consuming and hard to gauge which policy to promote, or advocate for in social work. There are a lot of policies that could be changed, or enforced to advance the well-being of society. For instance, policies surrounding smoking, and welfare are a few policies that I analyzed and engaged in to promote economic and social well being. I plan to learn and experience more ways in practice where I can advance the well-being of society. I also plan to continue analyzing policies that affect diverse populations, and advocating for policies that relate to emerging local, regional, and societal
Human oppression can be defined as the feeling of being heavily burdened, mentally or physically by troubles and adverse conditions ("Dictionary.com"). There are many forms of human oppression and we will take a closer look at all of those. We will also, take a closer look at some real life examples. Furthermore, sexism can be defined as unfair treatment of people based on their sex ("Merriam-Webster.com").
For example, unequal treatment made to haitians by the Dominicans as done to the Natives by Columbus and his crew. Both of their needs and treatments are not met, the natives were mistreated and tortured by the Spaniards in order for them to find gold, and the Haitians are not given the right to a medical treatment, education, or citizenship. They were both also put to work on harsh hours and conditions in a low paying manner. Both populations have decreased due to death of illness transmitted by their lack of hygiene and medicine. None are given any rights, the Haitians are banned from their rights and are taken away from their homes and comfort and forced to live in construction sites as well as the Native's homes were taken away or destroyed in order to find their goods and steal them.
For example, the old slavery laws in the early days of the United States. Black people were literal slaves to their society and yet they were also forced to obey the social contract even though they were being treated unjustly by their own society. Black people did not benefit from their social contract as they received no sort of protection or any benefits for obeying the contract. Before the laws were officially abolished and the slaves liberated, there were people who questioned their government’s treatment of black people and there were black people who fought for their own liberty. If it hadn’t been for people who questioned and fought against their society’s decision on the matter, it might have taken much longer to abolish the slavery laws or it might not have happened at
”(Twelvetrees, 2001) It takes special skills to work within communities especially if the community is not very open to suggestions and the issue to be addressed is sensitive. To be effective in community work, it takes a collaborative effort and partnership to bring about changes and advance the community. When working with communities, the planned change model as developed by Kirst-Ashman & Hull (2009) is a tool that can be utilized.
Social oppression in this world is a problem that affects people physically, socially, and emotionally. People physically are left out in this world because of oppression, there has been many battles to have equality for all. Martin Luther King Jr fought during his life for equality yet the battle is ongoing. Socially people struggle to fit it yet they should not be working that hard because everyone should be accepted for who they are. Some people fall into depression because of the emotions caused with
Those slaves were used to mine in harsh conditions, for precious metals like gold and were treated as inferior to the whites. Many of them perished in this process while the others suffered their lives as slaves. Other examples include the colonisation of India, Africa and South-East Asia. However,
