Unit 2 Discussion: Cabin in the Woods 1. Provide a fictitious scenario for a crime that could occur and produce the assigned evidence in the environment you were assigned (image). You can be creative or draw inspiration from a film or book. Remember to select a crime based on the Category Block that you were assigned based on your last name. Make sure you end your scenario with officers being called to the scene. Jonathan and Brittany Harris took their 23 year old daughter to a cabin in North Carolina for a vacation on break from college. Their daughter Jessica had a bedroom downstairs in the cabin and was preparing a bath and going to drink a glass of wine. A man broke into the cabin and went into the bedroom of Jessica’s where she was at and she bolted to …show more content…
I would also use photographs to document the scene when it comes to injuries sustained by the victim and other important pieces of evidence such as things the suspect may have dropped or left behind that may contain important details of the attacker. A sketch would be used to determine where the evidence was found as well as location of suspect in relation to the break in and the assault. This would be more accurate when it comes to precise measurements. Maintaining the integrity of the evidence by having a proper chain of custody is important to a case or investigation. Every piece of evidence must be accounted for and logged, as well as who has had access to the evidence and where the evidence has been stored. This must be done, or a case can be jeopardized by not allowing the evidence to be admissible in a court hearing. References Bertino, A. J. (2016). February 24, 2005 Jessica Lunsford was discovered missing from her home by her family, where she shared with her father and her grandparents. John Couey was accused of entering the Lunsford home through an unlocked door around 3 A.M. Went up to Jessica’s room and woke her up and said “Don’t yell or nothing” and had her follow him out and into his domain. During the deposition and video recording of his confession he stated all the he did to her and where he kept her. John Couey stated in his confession that he kept her in his bed and raped here multiple times.
REPORTER: The reporter/mother (Jackie) called with concerns for the victims, Cheyanne and Savannah. One Saturday night (2 or 3 weeks ago), the mother went through Cheyanne’s phone and saw inappropriate pictures and a video. The reporter said Savannah took the pictures of Cheyanne in her panties and bra. Also, there was a video in the phone where Cheyanne was penetrating herself with a hair brush.
JonBenét Ramsey was just six years old when she was beaten and strangled in her family's Colorado home. More than two centuries later, her killer remains a mystery. Many mistakes were made during this case, and many suspects that weren’t investigated as much as they were supposed to led this case to go in mystery of the real guilty one amongst them. Much evidence could’ve helped, and it was right under their noses about who killed JonBenet Ramsey on Christmas night. Many mistakes were made during this case; however, they were found out after the case was coming to a closing.
The simulation exercise prepares students for what the role of a public defender or a prosecutor entails. The preparation for the simulation includes reading over the case file and understanding what charges were brought against the defendant. Then analysis the evidence of the case. This provides the backbone for the case and deal making. Although I was not able to complete the plea portion of the simulation I have provided the reflections of my preparations.
A major crime scene, such as JonBenet’s, details where serious physical and/or emotional trauma is reported, this can include crimes such as murder, manslaughter, and rape (Standing Bear 1999). Due to the nature of a homicide, evidentiary findings can only be determined after a professional examination of the crime scene has occurred (Pepper 2010). The three principles to ensure an effective investigation is conducted includes: rapid response to the crime scene; to secure the scene before evidence is contaminated, damaged, lost or stolen. Secondly, gathering of evidence, all evidence at the crime scene must be preserved and noted whether physical or testimonial; in some cases, this can lead investigators straight to the perpetrator. Lastly, processing of the evidence; this includes putting together all available evidence to determine a verdict in court (Pepper 2010).
The Lindbergh Kidnapping Crime has always been a part of the world we live in. Whether it be theft, murder, or kidnapping, it has been and always will be a huge factor in society. With crime, comes forensics; the “behind the scenes” work in all cases. Forensics is described as “relating to the use of scientific knowledge or methods in solving crimes or relating to, used in, or suitable to a court of law” (Crime Museum 1). Dubbed as “The Crime of the Century”, The Lindbergh kidnapping has affected the criminal justice system in more areas than one.
Michelle Wilkins, a 27-year-old pregnant woman, went through a tramatic event. She ended up at Dynel Lane's house after seeing an ad on Craigslist about free maternity clothes. Michelle said she had to go but thought Dynel was lonely because she just kept talking over her. She stayed a while longer and listened to Dynel, thinking she was being thoughtful. After finally deciding it was time to go, Michelle was guided down to the basement where Dynel claimed to have more maternity clothes.
If you are interested in working in the legal system, then a degree in criminal justice is something to consider. You can complete some of the courses you need for your degree online. There are a number of possible jobs you can get in this field. Below is a list of some of the jobs you can get once you complete your studies: Probation Officer Probation officers are professionals who are responsible for monitoring people who have been released from the correction systems. They make sure that people adhere to the terms of their probation.
Typically, when there’s evidence discovered on a crime scene, it must go through proper policy and procedure. All of this begins at the crime scene when the evidence is being disposed of. Furthermore, the evidence needs to establish a chain of custody so that it can be used in trial to convict the accused. It all comes down to maintaining a proper chain of custody because in the end, it will either make you or break you. When chain of custody is done correctly, it is proof to the court that the evidence presented in front of them is the same evidence collected from the crime scene.
The nonfiction book, Jumped, Fell, or Pushed: How Forensics Solved 50 “Perfect” Murders, is an informative and well written book by the author, Stephen A. Koehler. Okay, you get two options, take Mr. Laney’s forensic science class at Lincoln High School or read this book. If you don’t know anything about Forensics, this book gives a sufficient overview of the subject and its counterparts. There is no main plot or developing characters within the book. The type of evidence varies from chapter-to-chapter, as well as the forensic technique implemented to analyze that evidence.
Evidence found at the place of the crime can give investigators clues to who committed the crime. For example, investigators can find footprints, fingerprints, or even the murder weapon. In fact, a hatchet was found on property, which detectives believe is the murder weapon(Allard,2013). This is important because the hatchet gives clues to who committed the crimes.
At approximately 1557 HRS a witness sees a man walking west between the cemetery and the Mears residence, which is near the trail head and where the girls bodies were located later the next day. The man matches the description of the photo released and was muddy had had blood on him. *This information was not obtained until 3 months into the investigation. At approximately 1730 the Sheriff’s Office is notified about the girls missing by both families and a report is taken.
Crime has been at its highest this year. Forensic science has played a major part in investigating crimes and searching for evidence that is not seen by the naked eye(Dillon). The field of forensics is continually growing, causes of death have become more interesting, autopsies are more critical, and the salary is appreciable(Gewin). Since there are only 18 forensic science undergraduate programs in the US that have been authorized by the American Academy of Forensic Science, my prospective college choices are limited. After tackling the time it will take to earn my bachelors in forensics(4 years), then finish medical school and four years of residency, it will eventually all be worth the wait.
Crime Scene Processing Emily King 0551488 FRSC 3010H October 23rd 2015 Properly processing a crime scene is extremely important and can determine the outcome of a case. If evidence is collected incorrectly it may get destroyed or contaminated. When there are only trace amounts of evidence, it is very important that all of it is collected properly. The most important part of crime scene investigation is the investigators. In order to assess the crime scene, each investigator must be competent and know how to do their job correctly.
Crime scene photography, sometimes referred to as forensic photography or forensic imaging, is the art of producing an accurate representation of an accident or crime scene. Crime scene photography is an important asset in the collection of evidence at the crime scene, documents the appearance and location of victims, shell casings, footprints, bloodstain patterns, and other physical evidence. In order for photographs to be admissible in a court of law, the standard for photographs of crime scenes and evidence must be of sufficient quality. Photography has a vital role in the decision made in court because the pictures are to represent the scene as it was exactly. Digital SLR single reflex camera is the most often used camera in crime scene investigations.
