Leadership is of utmost importance because it has the ability to serve as a driving force for many individuals. By curating an environment of communication, direction, motivation, and guidance, a leader is able to progress towards growth and success. Many think that leaders have to be appointed, but that is simply not true. In the book You Don't Need a Title to Be a Leader by Mark Sanborn, many eye opening points and advice was presented. The book gives insight on characteristics of leaders, stories that correlate with the point being made, ways to improve your leadership capabilities, and more.
The book begins discussing that you in fact do not have to be given a superior title in order to be a leader. Many individuals believe a title is

Growing up, I was taught to respect everyone. One point in the text that I enjoyed pondering on was that good leaders are followed out of ‘respect and commitment, rather than fear and compliance’(Sanborn, 2008). If the motivation to follow a leader is fear, I believe the followers lack trust and loyalty to the leader. Another “ah-ha” moment while reading the text was when the author stated the point of drifting. Lacking attention and focus can result in losing purpose and engagement. This can create complacency, or a comfortability with not producing results or growth. Leaders are always finding more ways to improve and progress, so focus and attention is important.
Personally, this book made me realize how crucial it is to prioritize and live intentionally everyday. Prioritizing is making time for the things of importance to you. The reason for prioritizing is because what you give energy to, will grow. A leader who is focused on success, will succeed. Living intentionally results in greater progress and outcomes. Being your own leader is important because it is important to be able to trust yourself as well, but with prioritization and living intentionally, I believe it is much easier to trust yourself and your
There are situations where it’s easier to just do what you are told then it is to make yourself do what you are told. But that is essentially what it is about. Being a follower doesn’t mean you have to be a blind follower. To think of yourself as a one man squad would be the best analogy. You aren’t controlled by those above you, you are just taking commands from them.
Lisa Cash Hanson said, "Leadership is the ability to guide others without force into a direction or decision that leaves them still feeling empowered and accomplished. " Hanson continues to remind me of the selfless nature that great leaders continue to practice. To me, leadership is not a title or destination. Leadership isn't about remembrance or fame, it's about the impact, inspiration, and the influence you have on others.
Leadership shows one can rise to the occasion and influence people in a positive way. Everybody can lead, whether it be in an official leadership position or by leading
Another example of why leaders can’t be leaders without followers from Lord of the Flies, is Jack. In the beginning of the book, Jack also wanted to be a leader alongside Ralph. They held an election and Ralph won. He won because of his followers, as Ralph’s followers were stronger than Jack’s, therefore making him the elected leader. An example of this in real life is the presidential election.
Leaders must also prioritize resources if they are limited by allocating the right amount of resources to the right individuals and they must always be prepared for the backlash that comes with having to make decisions on how much of a resource an individual gets, because not everyone will be happy with the decision you made and at times may feel like you are doing them wrong. Leader’s ability to adjust to situations is another big responsibility, as this is where the leaders and followers are easy to pick out. As a leader being able to adjust to any given situation is what makes you stand out from the rest and is what helps subordinates respect you and what to help you accomplish given missions and
In our current generation, leadership is necessary for humans to successfully function in a positive way. Leadership helps individuals motivate and inspire others to work together, while also producing guidance and direction to ensure that goals are met. Simply having a capable leader can make a big difference on the group's performance. When Leaders ignore their responsibility in a group, it affects everyone negatively, as an individual and as a group. It can lead to disorganization which can delay the productivity of the group.
“If you want to become a great leader, you need to prepare yourself to become a great leader, and the best way to do that is to study great leaders.” (Schembechler 7). Being a leader means defining and exhibiting moral and ethical courage and setting an example for everyone within any given group. Being a leader helps you teach leadership skills to your family, friends, and employees who will then help do the "heavy lifting" of moving the masses from where it is today to where it needs to be in the future. In today's day in age, people will believe that great leaders are born to lead.
First and foremost, leaders come in all shapes and forms, there is not one set physical mold for them, but what they all do share are certain characteristics and desires. Leadership in and of itself, is the ability to guide others, take responsibility, and share a vision that inspires and leaves others with a sense of empowerment. Evidently, it takes an exceptional leader to exhibit exceptional leadership skills. Additionally, the most prominent act that all adequate leaders demonstrate is that they are steadily engaged in enhancing their leadership skills. There have been various magnificent leaders throughout history, such as Martin Luther King Jr., Sojourner Truth, Nelson Mandela, and Eleanor Roosevelt.
In developing this paper on leadership, I examined what was most important to me as a leader. As I reflected on my leadership philosophy, I thought about my experiences and the principals that I have learned through my own self-discovery and the observation of other leaders that I have had throughout my life. My leadership philosophy paper will focus on what leadership is to me, core values, and knowledge of others. In thinking about my definition of leadership, I thought of what was most important to me in and as a leader.
According to Daniel Goleman, there are three types of attention essential for a leader; attention on others, attention on oneself and attention on the entire world. Focusing on others and oneself cultivates emotional intelligence while focusing on the entire world improves the leader’s ability to innovate, strategize and manage organizations. An excellent leader should create a balance between these three types of attention. Therefore, directing attention by cultivating awareness is the main role of a leader.
The definitions of leadership appearing in the first three decades of the 20th century emphasized control and centralization of power (Northouse, 2016, p.2). In the early 1900s research began to see if leaders possessed certain traits or characteristics that would distinguish
In fact, leadership is an art rather than a science. The process of learning leadership is a hand-on experience, which focuses on practice instead of concepts itself. This course provides me a chance to gain more insight about leadership and it helps me develop my new image of leadership. Meanwhile, I also use the theories in our textbook as a framework for self-assessment of my leadership skills and try to develop my own leadership style during the
In our diverse society where competition is high on the limited opportunities having personal focus is requisite for one to be successful. Having focus enables us to pursue one thing that defines rather than trying to do all things that we find interesting. My focus is to enhance my speaking skills and learn essential characteristics that make up a good leader. As a Mental Health Worker, crucial activities is not only about having common traits such as self-awareness but being able to share great ideas and set achievable objectives. Focusing on leading people effectively will have a tremendous impact on how I show compassion to myself and the patients.
Introduction Leadership is the art of empowering people around you to achieve a goal. As a leader I want to help others become leaders themselves. I firmly believe that by leading based on my values this will be accomplished. I have had many leadership influences throughout my career. Some of them showed me the way I wanted to someday lead and others showed me exactly how not to.
‘Organizations provide its managers with legitimate authority to lead, but there is no assurance that they will be able to lead effectively’ (Lunenburg, 2011). Organizational success usually requires a combination of both management and leadership. In today’s dynamic work environment, leaders are expected to challenge the present state of affairs, and to motivate and convince organization members. Managers are needed to assist in creating and maintaining a positive and well-functioning workplace. ‘Leadership and management are often considered practically overlapping concepts’ (Bohoris and Vorria, 2007, p. 1).
