I had the opportunity to view two of his class periods, an accelerated class and an ESOL class. Both of Mr. R’s classes, along with the school in its entirety, consisted of mostly Hispanics and ESOL students. Out of approximately 1,030 students, the demographics for Cross Keys High are as follows: 67% Hispanics, 16% African-American,13% Asian, 3% Caucasian, 1% Other. US News reports that Cross Keys High School is the “most culturally diverse high school in the state of Georgia with students from 65 countries who speak 75 different languages.” Out of Mr. R’s accelerated class of 23 students, there were three Blacks, one Indian, and the rest were Hispanics. Similarly, Mr.R’s ESOL class consisted of 13 students; only one Asian and twelve Hispanics.
Vietnamese Institute of Linguistics (2006) have collected over 3.000 foreign loanwords from English. English is considered as the world language, and, is one of the main subjects at school. More and more english schools are founded. More and more Vietnamese people is using Internet to access foreign media. That leads to the tendency of using more and more English loanwords today.
The authors begin with a description of two different situations in the same city, Nogales, which has been cut in half by a fence. The north part of Nogales belongs to Santa Cruz County, Arizona, United States. The average household income there is about $30,000 per year. The education system is great, for most adults they have high school degrees, and almost all the teenagers are in school. In addition, social services like medical care, electricity, and road networks to other parts of the states are all provided by the government.
Working both of these jobs, owning a photography studio, and teaching 5th grade, it would estimate 60,000 dollars a year. To achieve this goal I have to receive my Bachelor of Arts, which one has to maintain a “B” average in all english classes, and receiving 18 hours of english classes. Taking this class will also give me credits towards photography. Also, I am going to receive my Bachelor of Science, which is another addition to teaching. ASU costs about 14,000 a year, and about 6,000 a semester.
According to the Bureau of Legislative Research (2010), students who qualify as English Language Learners (those with limited English skills) earn the school an additional amount of money as well. For the 2008-09 school year, Arkansas districts spent $12.5 million on ELL students according to this same research conducted. According to Oleaga (2014), there were over fifty-five thousand undocumented children unaccompanied by a parent or guardian who were apprehended from late 2013 to mid-2014. This means that more children who have limited English skills are continuing to enter the country. Cultural Influence Students who have a different background are a benefit to any classroom.
Most of the oil could be exported by pipeline or by the Port of Galveston. Many of the larger cities grew over 500% during this time. This would be a great time for Texas and of growth. Many people would come to seek work during the Great depression and also when WW2 started and needed to build the logistical side of the war effort. 1.5 million Soldiers came to train in Texas during WW2.
At my high school, most people believe that being Hispanic means you are from Mexico. As an officer in my school’s Hispanic Society, I work to educate fellow students that being Hispanic includes many nationalities and cultures. Both of my parents are from Guatemala, and my Hispanic heritage is strong. This is why I participate in Hispanic Society. Our missions are to educate others on the Latino cultures; to represent fellow Hispanic students when issues come before school administrators; and to facilitate community service efforts.
In The Arc, it is reported that “Every year between 150,000-200,000 students with disabilities age out of special education (in most states) at age 22”. Questioning New Mexico’s addressing of the issue, I was pleased to find that the US Department of Education is trying to award contracts to two large common core testing (PARCC and Smarter Balanced) to develop computer-based assessments for students with cognitive
Introduction Spanish is the third most spoken language in the world after English and Mandarin; 400 million people worldwide speak it as their native tongue and over 500 million speak it as a second language (“Spanish Language,” 2010). Within the public educational system, children interact with all sorts of people. Personally, I went to a public elementary school local to Palm Springs. Vista Del Monte or in English, "View of the Mountain" was a mostly Hispanic school. Even the name is in Spanish. I could count the number of Caucasian people in my class on one hand.
The school district “has an estimated student population of 46,000 that is almost 90% Hispanic, and 25% English Language Learners (ELL)” (Knight, 2005). Many of the students attending the Ysleta Independent School District and other schools in El Paso wait on the bridge for hours every morning and cross the border, in order to attend school. The schools in this district are a mix of students from both Mexico and the United States. Even though these students share the same schools, teachers, and class as their American counter parts they still face many different challenges. However, school districts in El Paso such as Ysleta and El Paso Independent do a phenomenal job in not only helping Mexican migrant students obtain the skills needed to succeed in school but also provide a quality education.
Which equates to the amount of time a student is in middle and high school combined accounting for perfect attendance. Most shockingly however, is a whopping 5 million people in the United States play for more than 40 hours a week. The average amount of time a person works for a full-time job. (McGonigal.) If video games are not enough, many Americans also use many forms of social media.
It is also entirely run by volunteers and has served 100,000 students since the first event. According to United States Census Bureau, 15.2 percent of Tarrant County residents live under the poverty line. This 15.2 percent means that approximately 80,000 out of 500,000 people who are under 18 years old in Tarrant County could use the services Back to School Roundup
In research done by by Kelley and Kohnert (2012), 8-13 year-old Spanish-speaking ELL students were tested on their recognition and production of English vocabulary to provide evidence of a cognate advantage for Spanish-speakers. The study tested 30 typically developing children who spoke Spanish at home and English at school. The researchers used two vocabulary measures in the study. The first, PPVT III, measured students’ recognition of spoken vocabulary words (their receptive vocabulary) by asking students to choose one of four pictures that corresponded to a spoken vocabulary word. The second, EOWPVT, measured their production of a vocabulary word from a given picture (their expressive vocabulary).
