Should the grading system be changed? Are grading students on tests, homework, quizzes, etc. actually beneficial to students? Do receiving grades truly help students to understand the material that is being taught? What it comes down to is the question of how effective is the grading system and should it be challenged?
These adjustments help to ensure students achieve, targeted standards-based learning goals within a set time frame. I guarantee you that.” The performance of a school’s organization is based off of the results of standardized tests taken by students (Walberg). Standardized tests are a guide to the board of education on how a school can improve its curriculum in a way that is most beneficial to students (Walberg). “The scores of standardized tests are not the same as student achievement” (Harris). In spite of the people who believe that standardized tests are a key factor to determine a student’s academic abilities, standardized tests distract students from their current studies, they are only designed for one way of learning and comprehending material, and they are biased to students.
The College Board administers the SAT test in the United States. As the Taylor 2 College Board’s website says, the SAT test "does not pretend to measure all factors related to freshman student success, but its scores have a statistically significant relationship to that success. It continues to weigh heavily in the college student evaluation process.” Along with the SAT, we also have another similar test the ACT. The ACT is a standardized test to determine a high school graduate’s preparation for college-level work. It covers four areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science reasoning.

Standardized testing is a popular tool used by a lot of schools and universities to measure the qualifications of a candidate attempting to enter a program, university, or even a high school. These tests are designed in such a way that they offer a consistent reference to school and university administrators in order to determine whether the applicant has the necessary skills to succeed in future academic endeavors. These tests usually have multiple choice questions and the applicant is awarded a grade based on a point system. Some argue that standardized testing is an inaccurate tool and cannot really measure the intelligence or knowledge of a student.
Standardized testing has become a problem because it causes students to memorize things rather than use a process to find an answer. Integrating critical thinking into the education system will encourage students to think more about how they find an answer. Knowing the process allows students to have less of a struggle on questions where they do not have an answer memorized.
The dilemma is assessments should not be limited to nor even rely substantially on a standardized test that is primarily multiple-choice paper/pencil. Student assessment a challenging area because our school accountability is dependent on how well our students perform on the state standardized assessment. The accountability system has a lot to do on how and why our educators continuously assess students knowledge of the content using traditional summative assessment strategies such as multiple choice questions. Instances when the accountability ratings are available to each district, there is a period where the data is disaggregated followed by central office personnel having meetings with each principal on what interventions will be in place to ensure the scores go up in this current weakness area.
