I would imagine that the idea of an independent American was not an easy idea for many to stand by. Many would have probably thought that it was an effort that was not worth the risks, that fighting the kingdom of Britain would bring too heavy a cost. But of course, there were those with enough courage to speak openly about their feelings on their country 's situation. Patrick Henry seemed like a man that was willing to do whatever it took to gain independence. Henry’s letter made me proud to be an American, and to know that these men and women were coming together to fight for a better future.
Jonathan Edwards version of God was very aggressive and unforgiving. Insult after continuing insult, this does not seem like the Jesus Christ with the wonderful forgiving spirit. With the words, “God hates you,” repeated multiple times throughout the sermon, it is truly hypocritical that the God described as forgiving and loving of all would say “I hate you,” every five minutes. I personally feel like this is not the way God would like to be described, and that God would much rather liked to be showed as a forging and gentle spirit.
In the Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls analyzed her mother’s emotional breakdowns. In one instance, she notices “... the positive thoughts would give way to negative thoughts, and the negative thoughts seemed to swoop into her mind the way a big flock of black crows takes over the landscape, sitting thick in the trees and on the fence rails and lawns, staring at you in ominous silence” (Walls 418). Negative thoughts can consume one’s mind, whereas the positive thoughts are nugatory. The negative thoughts keep a person agonizing and stressing over it. This quote emphasizes how a negative mindset can make a person depressed or ill to be around. People are told to focus on the bright side, but that mindset has to be developed. People should figure
Have you ever wondered what it means to be modern? Being modern means acting in a different way than others after realizing the consequences after it. Everyone should have an opportunity to step out of their comfort zone and show their true colors. Janie crawford was modern when she stepped out of her comfort zone and decided to stand up for herself and free herself from being someone who she wasn’t. Harrison Bergeron had an opportunity to show how smart he really was compared to the people around him who could’nt. And when good people do bad things, that’s stepping out of what they do best to what they should not be doing and learning from it.
To begin, everybody has their own perspective, their own view-point. As Marcus Aurelius once said, “Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is perspective, not fact.” Fredrick Douglas was an African-American abolitionist, author, an influential historical figure, and immensely outspoken about the suffering, torment, agony, and hardships that slaves had endured at the hands of their brutal and ruthless slaveholders. Fredrick Douglas was born into slavery and he was fully aware of the pain and horror that slaves went through. He was treated as inferior because of his skin color; he was looked down upon, and underestimated over something he had no power or control of. Douglas knew what it was like to be savagely beaten,
No matter how hard the government tried to put an end to the concerns that were rising about Rocky Flats, the Arvada community exposed the governments lies about how there was “no critical danger.” People such as Dr. Edward Martell and Dr. Carl Jonson put out the truth about Rocky Flats and the lethal radiation levels that people in the Arvada community have been exposed to. Soon after, thousands of protestors were ready to fight against the government and its secrets. Iversen also took action against the government by writing this story on Rocky Flats. She became a voice for the people who put their life on the line while working at Rocky Flats.
Working at the factory provides Lyddie with a great deal of money, more than she has ever got before. If Lyddie had not gone to the factory she would have no money left. Before Lyddie worked at the factory she had a different job. She was a house maid and got paid little to no income at all, then when she went to the factory all of that changed. “ The pay reflected her proficiency, she was making almost $2.50 a week…” ( page 86 ). Lyddie was very poor when she was a maid due to no earnings therefore she needed the money. When she went to the factory her wages went up tremendously compared to what they used to be. In another case Lyddie
In life some feel the need to prove something to others. That they are better, stronger, or even more intelligent. Whatever the case may be people will go through extreme measures to prove themselves. But who do we really need to prove anything to? Is it our parents? Friends? Enemies? Or is it even ourselves? Chris McCandless, deceased adventurer from “Into the Wild”, underwent many obstacles that seems highly ridiculous. Certain physical and mental challenges that could have prevented, Chris decided to do defying the chance of death or severe injury. But the real misunderstanding is who was Chris proving his manhood too?
Chris McCandless was in his early 20’s, he was the kind of that guy that wanted to learn and experience life without all of the material things. He wanted to be independent from his parents and friends so Chris did something that would be insane for most of us humans but to him, it wasn’t. He went into the wild of Alaska for months, in fact, McCandless even thought he could make it out alive at the end of his journey. As a matter of fact, he was known as being a risk taker and enjoyed being out and about in the nature side of the world. Many would believe that Chris McCandless went into the wild to purposely kill himself; however, I myself believe that McCandless did not do it purposely.
“She knew in which of the two rooms that lay behind those doors stood the cage of the tiger, and which waited the lady.” Which did she choose? In Frank Stockton's short story, the Lady and the Tiger, the lovely princess loves deeply for a man, but now that her father has found out she is with a man in a lower social class, she had to witness her soul mate be sentenced to her father’s coliseum. The princess loves this man greatly, but she is scared that she would have to watch her lover being mauled by a tiger or fall in love with a woman that she deeply despises. Due to her love and compassion towards this man, she chooses the open the door that stood the lady, but doing this she knows that she will have to live knowing someone else is with her partner.
Society’s values influence people to construct their personal mores around them, and those who do not are not accepted by society. In our society, those who have well-paying careers are valued above those who do not. So when McCandless decided against following the path society expects him to, his parents were upset. “Chris informed his parents that he had no intention of going to college. When Walt and Billie suggested that he needed a college degree to attain a fulfilling career, Chris answered that careers were demeaning ‘twentieth-century inventions,’ more of a liability than an asset, and that he would do fine without one, thank you” (114). The haughty tone with which he ends the sentence shows his confidence in his decision to live how he wants to live rather than how society expects him to. His parents, who McCandless sees as conformists, want him go to college so he can have a career that is “fulfilling”, which to society seems mean wealth. However, McCandless chooses not to be a conformist by rejecting the path that society deems proper and
Furthermore, Winston always believed that a person should always fight for what is right, and that is what he did. With Winston leading his country against Germany, he led with an attitude of bravery and confidence, similar to how the British were feeling at that time. For example, Winston Churchill gave one of his most iconic speeches on the special day of June 4, 1940, where he used his words to inspire people to stand up for the Allies. As a politician he even gave a speech to Parliament and told them he had, “nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.” (history.com) He was showing that he himself was ready to fight as well. Winston Churchill helped change the outcome of the War. He had finally achieved the sweet moment of victory
People have different views on what success really means. Some say success is based on money or fame. If you have a lot of money or fame you're "definitely" successful. Others say success is based on your fulfillment and overall happiness in your life. Alfred Brooks, the protagonist in the novel The Contender by Robert Lypsite, has many friends, family, and supporters. Alfred also has almost no financial gain through boxing, but he's been inspired to work hard. Lastly, Alfred is very happy with his life even after his boxing career fails. On the other hand, Midge Kelly, the main character in the film "Champion," is the polar opposite of Alfred. Midge loses his friends, family, and supporters. Also, Midge is rich, but he dies alone and unhappy. At the end of the novel, Alfred Brooks is more successful than Midge Kelly is at the end of the movie.
It took just forty five days for United States citizens to acquiesce their rights to freedom and privacy for the sake of safety following the events of September 11, 2001. Forty five days is how long it took the United States Congress to pass a law that gave up the very concept of liberty upon which this country is founded. The morning sky was a brilliant shade of blue with not a cloud in sight in New York on that fateful day of September. That all changed at 8:45 AM when a Boeing 767 jet plane tore into the north tower of the World Trade Center. Eighteen minutes later, a second Boeing 767 bit into the sixtieth floor of the south tower. Screams and sirens pierced the air; thick, black smoke and flying debris ruined the perfectly clear
People rebel when no justice being served. It is understandable why people act a certain way. Have you ever loved someone more than yourself? A person is your biggest pride and joy to be safe? Can you imagine how it feels to no longer have your pride and joy with in a split second, due to the way they look? The exctuaray pain of a death of a child is a mother 's worst nightmare. They feel it is the only way to raise attention. In the city of Ferguson, Michael Brown was an unarmed black teen and was shot by police; this was the beginning of a wave of uprisings against police brutality nationwide.
