1. Throughout the documentary “Super-Size Me” there was one main protagonist. After the introduction of the film, the viewer is introduced to the filmmaker and director, Morgan Spurlock. After “400,000 deaths each year due to obesity” and the risk of becoming overweight has increased dramatically to “1 in 4 people” in the U.S, Spurlock decided to take action. During the documentary, Spurlock took on an experiment of eating purely McDonalds for breakfast, lunch and dinner for exactly one month. The motivation for this experiment was to inform the audience about obesity in America, also to support two young girls who became extremely overweight from eating McDonalds; who then wanted to sue the multinational business but had trouble in court. The first step of Morgan Spurlock’s journey of eating McDonalds for exactly one month was to have health checks with multiple expert opinions. The doctors used technical language such as “overweight, obese, blood pressure, glucose” and “health”. The purpose of the included technical language was to portray the documentary seem more sophisticated and professional. Whereas Morgan Spurlock uses social language throughout the documentary. Most of the time, Spurlock talks to his viewers with casual or simple words and also communicates with his hands using a variety of hand gestures. The purpose of social language in this film was to use some simple wording so that if the audience didn’t understand the technical language, they would understand the social language. In the article "Don’t blame the eater" written by Zinczenko, he argues that fast food is the main reason why so many teenagers are suffering from obesity in United States. He explains that many companies will use advertisements to deceive customers. For example, a company’s website offers a chicken salad with less than four hundred calories per serving; however, they don’t label everything that the salad has In the first label. They will use separate labels in the products that the salad has on it, so the costumer gets confused and thinks that he is actually eating a four hundred calories salad that is "healthy". The essay portrays Peck’s view of the conflicts that she goes through in her life as an overweight person. She makes a point by point contrast to her imaginary life, repeating the phrase “I have never”, and her real life where she faces discrimination because of her weight. Peck’s use of tone and word choice highlights the purpose of her essay, which is to raise awareness about discrimination against overweight people to audiences who are thin and have not experienced any judgment from others.
