ADVANTAGES OF SUPPLY CHAIN COLLABORATION WITHIN SUPPLY CHAIN: A STUDY OF NIGERIA BREWERY UPSTREAM SUPPLY CHAIN 1.1 INTRODUCTION The theme supply chain collaboration has been dated back since the early 1980s. The concept is gaining ground in global competitive organisations as a major supply force in improving operational performance in the breweries industry (Ellram and Cooper, 1990). For this reason, global competitive organizations are said to have a speedy growth in outsourcing and is operating in a network of business environment. 1.4 LITERATURE REVIEW A review of literature will focus on present and previous empirical review on supply chain collaboration from different search engine such as Google scholar database, Ebisco business source Elite, ABI information search engine etc. This study will take a critical look on the advantages/benefits of supply chain collaboration, examines the barriers to successful collaboration in the breweries supply chain and investigate the conditions under which supply chain collaboration would enhance operational performance of Brewery industry in Nigeria. Simatupang and Sridharan, (2005) explored empirical study to develop an interrelated dimensions; information sharing dissemination, decision synchronization and incentives alignment. However, the study was conducted in a company in New Zealand. Akintoye, McIntosh, & Fitzgerald, (2000) recongnised the production planning process and purchasing system as a strategic application of supply chain collaboration in United States construction industry. Stank, keller and Daugherty, (2001) examined between internal and external collaboration between various departments within a firm. Therefore they found out that there is a relationship between internal and external collaboration. Corsten and Felde (2005) carried out a study on the relationship between supplier collaboration, buyer innovative capability and firm financial performance. In the same vein, Lee (2005) also conducted an empirical study and emphasis on critical communication models in supply chain collaboration which suggest the usage of social arrangement analysis to measure supply chain collaboration by studying the relationship between members in the same value
