Critical thinking is a high level of cognitive skills that helps us communicate and understand things effectively. In the You Tube video "Stossel Testing Therapeutic Touch," I found it was really interesting how the participants were given a placebo and yet most of them felt all these beneficial sleep changes. The power of the mind is amazing because if you believe it will work most likely you will feel that it did. My mother has all these crazy beliefs and I recall when I was bout 8 years old a bee stung me on my hand. I was crying and my mom told me if I wanted to get rid of the pain I had to get a pregnant woman to rub sugar on the wound.

Critical thinking is relevant in a few different aspects of life. For example, critical thinking can be applied to school and learning. There are people who support using different aspects of critical thinking in students curriculum. Laura Hummell said, "Critical thinking skill development is crucial in elementary schools. Students who are allowed to explore, empathize, question, hypothesize, conceptualize, experiment, and evaluate throughout their own learning become productive community members" (Hummell 5).

In my experience, what Martin Luther King Jr. calls “thinking intensively and critically” is very different from what my high school teachers called “critical thinking”, most especially by the way Dr. King links intelligence and learning to the development of character, that is, growth as a person. Too often in my past, teachers mentioned critical thinking only as a mental activity of seeing through stereotypes, evaluating both sides of issues and understanding and accepting differences. As worthwhile as these are, I have found that high level thinking without having a more enlightened character is simply inadequate. That was a recent, very positive experience with two very nice people of different faiths. As much as we had been taught in class about prejudice, the recent terrorists attacks across the world bred a good deal of ill-will in
Tim van Gelder, in his answering the same question said Critical thinking is hard to do and requires a deliberate effort to engage at and even at that, it takes years of practicing and continuous dedication to get good at it. Nonetheless, students should identify which few methods enhance their memory and understanding best when learning, as different students have different learning needs. Likewise, students, who are usually required to recall learning materials, are recommended to view future new materials with strong enthusiasm and determination (Shuilleabhain, 2014), as it is an approach to motivate students. However, students should take care not to practice learning techniques they are not familiar with, especially when nearing the exams; as students who, Lan (cited in Bednall and Kehoe, 2011, pp. 205-226) believes, “engage in unfamiliar strategies may induce a high working memory load, thereby diminishing the effectiveness of their study efforts.” Also, both teachers and parents alike should take the practical and relevant steps in ensuring that their students/children are well schooled in the manner of implementing effective learning techniques in their academic life.

Cognitive memory and knowledge of the real world develop and accumulate as children get older (John Locke). Newborn babies can remember things for a short time, infants remember events for days or weeks at a time, and older children can remember things for longer periods (Kali, 2015, p._). As an individual grows older he/ she is required to remember more complex information and consequently he/she develops strategies that help to accurately recall information needed to fulfill his/her daily commitments. Personally, I have used many methods of memorization at different stages and circumstances of my life, but the memory strategies that I have used most often, especially in college, include rehearsal, organization, writing, and elaboration.
