“It’s not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” Charles Darwin once said. In order for Salva to survive, he needed some basic survival skills. The three I noticed were adaptability, mental toughness, and motivation. Here’s some examples of Salva using these skills throughout the story. The first example was adaptability. Salva was great at adapting to his surroundings, whether he was in the desert or going across the Nile river. This came easily to Salva, because he was never stubborn and always did what was best, even if he didn’t want to. He was also resourceful, which is probably the #1 reason why he’s alive today. Salva also had lots of mental strength, which allowed
Caring For His People For instance, Ashoka was an enlightened ruler because of the way he cared for his people. Evidence of this is when Ashoka felt remorse for all the wars he fought and everyone he killed, so he decided to reject violence. Ashoka found enlightenment and changed the way of understanding history. He gave gifts
Due to his fearfulness, he starts to act fragile until he eventually encounters a hardship, in which his uncle, Jewiir, forces him to continue walking through the Okobo desert. This teaches him a lesson and tactic he uses to lead the lost boys through Sudan to Kenya to get to another refugee camp for survival. This lesson taught by his uncle also helps shape Salva’s character. Shaping his character also forces him to persevere more.
Being resilient in tough situations can be substantial in some cases. To be resilient means one has great wit, especially in a 'finding a way out ' scenario. It can even be the key to survival, as can be shown in a short excerpt from Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand. It gives a great example of resilience based off of a situation that Louie Zamperini finds himself and crew in as their plane crashes in the Pacific Ocean. What characteristic is most important in helping Louie survive?
(pg 73) This shows that Salva is persevering because even though he hates the refugee camp, he

Throughout the novel Salva demonstrates determination by pushing himself to do his best and not give up on anything no mater what is going on. One instance where Salva showed determination is on page 65, paragraph 4. “Marial was gone. Uncle was gone, too, murdered by those Nuer men right before salva’s eyes. Marial and uncle were no longer by his side, and they never would be again, but salva knew that both of them would have wanted him to survive,to finish the trip and reach the itang refugee camp safely.
A Long Walk to Water By Kirk Meyerholz, Period 4 Have you ever had to survive when you did not have food, water, or shelter? In “A Long Walk to Water” a person named Salva Dut had to run away from the war with nothing but his name. He finds himself walking across the country to find refuge and his family. The factors that made survival possible for Salva in “A Long Walk to Water” were boatbuilding and the refugee camps.
When Uncle Jewiir died, the group decided to bury him out of respect. Take note that five other people died before him, yet they didn’t even get buried at all. The main reason why Salva became such a great leader was because of Uncle Jewiir’s

Salva’s labor shows he will do anything to survive, and nothing will stop him. Once Salva started walking, another factor of his survival kicked in, He was a very lucky young boy. Salva was very fortunate because he didn’t get shot or attacked by crocodiles. In the text it states “Stunned, Salva realized that being forced under the water had
While his uncle was alive, he helped Salva do everything throughout the journey. Even when he died nobody forgot him and Salva’s memory of his loving uncle gave him the strength to finish the journey. Food and water was the most important factor that led to his survival. He knew that there was barely any water in the desert and that it was hard to find food which taught him to treasure everything he was given. Throughout the book we are led to believe that Salva’s parents and siblings had passed away but he never lost hope that they were still alive.
Many times has Savlas uncles words helped him through hopeless times. Salvas uncles words had encouraged Salva to go “ bit by bit, one step at a time”, so Salva thought, “ Perhaps…perhaps Salva could get through life at the camp in the way.” (72) As a result that Salva feels this way he is being encouraged by his uncles’ words, so that makes Salva feel stronger in a way. His uncle’s words help Salva, and encourage him through many of his challenges. Also in the book Salva remembers, “Most of all, he remembered how Uncle had encouraged him in the desert,”when
We learn in many survival books that our basic need in life is to survive. Many people have faced a catastrophic event in their lifetime and have lived to tell their story. Hurricanes, tornados, blizzards, and floods are just a few disasters that can change a person’s life in a split moment of time. Are you prepared when a disaster hits? Do you know how to prepare yourself in such cases?
