Katniss: the girl who survived
In Suzanne Collins dystopian novel The Hunger Games, 16 year old Katniss Everdeen lives along the “Seam” of district 12, one of the twelve outlying districts surrounding the “shining Capitol” of Panem, located in ruins of a nation once known as North America. In order to keep these districts in line, the government develops the annual “holiday” known as the Hunger Games, a fight to the death among other chosen tributes, lasting until there is only one person left standing. This “holiday” consists of forcing each of the twelve districts to randomly select two tributes to participate in these games, one male and one female between the ages of 12 - 18, during what is called the reaping.

She believes that no one but herself should be relied on to provide for her family. Ever since her father had brutally died in a bomb explosion her mother had completley lost everything, including her motivation to even provide for herself, leaving all of the responsibilities to be relied on Katniss. Although this caused almost a sense of hatred for her mother, Katniss would always be able to pull the courage to truly understand how she's feeling. For example Katniss states, “She must have really loved him to leave her home for the Seam. I try to remember that when all I can see is the woman who sat by, blank and unreachable, while her children turned to skin and bones. I try to forgive her for my fathers sake. But to be honest, I'm not the forgiving type.”. This information provides readers with a sense of sympathy for Katniss, for ever since this traumatic experience happened, Katniss has been forced to neglect the life of a normal teenage girl to practically raise her younger sister. Eventually, Katniss finds out she is not alone. For, as she was completing her routinely hunting session in the woods, she bumps into intricate handmade traps for catching animals. Fascinated, Katniss can't help but to not notice the 17 year old boy staring directly at her. But this boy is no stranger, she recognizes him faigley from around the seam. Sooner than Katniss would have ever …show more content…
Together, they are able to get food hunting and foraging. Though still in need of supplies, she and Rue devise a plan. While Rue lights decoy fires, Katniss sneaks up to the Cornucopia to collect any necessary supplies. The supplies are in a pyramid away from the main camp, and after the Carer's leave to investigate the fires, Katniss manages to blow up the supplies by cutting open a bag of apples with her arrows, which sets off the mines set to protect the pyramid. When Katniss doesn’t find Rue at their meeting spot, she goes looking for her and finds her just as another tribute stabs her with a spear. She is forever heartbroken, and quickly turns depressed. As the next days go on, surviving is just bringing Katniss down. She misses the companion she used to have, until she finds Peeta severely injured from his fight with Cato, barely able to walk. In return for his favor, Katniss helps him to a cave where they’ll be hidden. Days pass of them hiding, as more and more tributes die. Katniss, still caring for Peeta, needs to find a source of food. Starving, the two make their way down the lake, when suddenly Cato comes barreling toward them. Unexpectedly, however, he runs straight by them. Katniss realizes there are strange creatures chasing him, and all run to hide. Taking advantage of the situation, Cato attacks Peeta, but Katniss and Peeta manage to get him away, and soon enough the creatures overpower
At first, she is wary of getting too close to anyone, knowing that she will eventually have to turn on them to win. However, as she spends more time in the arena, she realizes that she cannot survive alone. She forms a bond with Rue, a young tribute from District 11, and together they work to take down some of the stronger opponents. Later, she also teams up with Peeta Mellark, her fellow tribute from District 12. While these alliances are initially formed out of necessity, they ultimately prove to be instrumental in Katniss's
Chapter 4 1. Why does Katniss perceive Peeta’s kindness as a threat? - Katniss thinks that he might be faking it and that he’s acting nice, just to survive. 2. Why does Katniss detest Haymitch? - Katniss detests Haymitch, because he is constantly drunk and not helping her.
When Rue died she covered Rue in flowers and braided her hair with flowers. In the end, Katniss and Peeta were going to end their lives together by eating Nightlock berries. So there would be no winner for this year's games. These are some of the ways Katniss shows how she is standing up to the capital.
Katniss Everdeen takes her sister's place as a tribute in the games along with Peeta Mellark. To survive they use their techniques and knowledge from home. They end up both winning but not without many bumps in the road. In the novel, some of the characters feel as if they “owe” someone else for a kindness shown.
In the end, in this part of the story Katniss must focus and take everything in before the games actually begin and prepare herself for what is about to come her
Since the Everdeens and the Snows are different kinds of parents, Katniss and Kristina develop into different kinds of women. Katniss uses her father’s death and her mother’s depression to her advantage, since these circumstances, although unfortunate, provider her with the opportunity to learn how to hunt, gather, trade at the Hob, and cook. Her parents’ impact on her causes Katniss to become a fighter and tackle whatever obstacles are thrown her way, no matter how overwhelming they seem. Kristina, on the other hand, succumbs to the negative influence of her parents, instead of rising above it and using her less than ideal circumstances to empower her to become a better person. She falls into the junkie lifestyle in the hopes that she can escape her painful family dynamic that includes an absent, drug addicted father, and a mother who barely pays any attention to her and denies her obvious drug addiction.
The main character reacts differently to fear. Under the influence of aversion, Katniss Everdeen is able to accomplish astonishing things. For instance when she volunteered as tribute in order to spear her sister’s life. Indeed, it was out of fear of losing her younger sister that she made the ultimate sacrifice. Another example was when Katniss decided to attend the feast of the games.
The cannon alerted, Katniss bolted to a backpack with arrows in it. She successfully survived the cornucopia attack and hid in a tree. In this process, she relives she got separated from
Has many Dystopian chartists for example they are told what to wear and how wear it. The connection Katniss and her sister have is extrandairy. Katniss volunteering for a death sentence, showing that she cares more about her little sister’s life than her own. Katniss breaks the rules by uniting forces with roe. Katniss has extraordinary care for peeta, she would rather kill herself then kill petea, they were going to eat poisonous berries.
After that, Katniss killed Marvel, the one who threw the spear, with her bow and arrow. Katniss cries, sings to Rue, then gathers flowers and lays them around her body to show the Capitol that they are not just “a piece of their game”. After reading this, I discovered that Katniss really thought of Rue as a sister. I think that it was very daring of Katniss to show an act of defiance to the capitol and show that they are humans and have feelings too. I loved how she stood up for herself and showed the Capitol what she believed in.
Katniss feels as if her freedom is being taken away and her ego is not important. She will do whatever it takes to bring back that feeling of self
Katniss had to be responsible for keeping her family and friends safe and alive, but she also had to take care of herself. In chapter eleven the Hunger Games had began and Katniss left behind the bow that was supposed to “belong to her”. She knew that there was no way she could have survived without it, but she also knew that it was her fault and she had to survive without it. In Chapter 13 Katniss was being “chased” by a fire and fire balls were being thrown at her. She got severely burned and couldn’t do much at all so she had to fix her own leg because there was no one else to help her.
Katniss was desperate for food and was on the verge of giving up but still had an ounce of hope which paid off in the long run and now she knows that she can survive because of the events in her childhood that happened to give her hope and let her survive. When Katniss needed direction to not get killed by the District 2 girl she just trusted her instincts which almost got her killed but helped her live too. Imagine losing your hearing if you were a hunter, that would be devastating, but once more Katniss trusted and held on to the little hope she had to survive. The Hunger Games as a whole has a good amount of themes, but survival is one of the more important themes because even though humans in the modern age don’t use the same survival skills used in the Games humans still have to be able to survive the current world even if it means to sacrifice something else. Finally let me ask you again after reading all that Katniss had to go through, what can you survive if it meant life or
This could signify the sixth step of the Hero’s Journey which is called Tests, Allies, and Enemies, where the hero is tested and sorts out alliances in the new world that they’re in. At the end of the Games, where Katniss not only helped spark rebellion within Panem, but she also wins rewards for her family and everyone back in her district. Since her district is known to be very poor, getting a huge supply of food and other items for a whole year is a big accomplishment. This could be considered to be aligned with the ninth step of the Hero’s Journey called Rewards, or Seizing the Sword. The ninth step is defined by the hero facing death and obtaining rewards that could be taken away, which in this case is riches and food for Katniss’ district, but it could be easily taken away by the Capitol due to her being a symbol of
This shows the readers that Katniss really about her mom and sister and she will keep them in her thoughts when she enters the games. The second quote that supports the theme is on page 22 “ With one sweep of my arm, I push her behind me. I volunteer I gasp I volunteer as tribute.” This quote helps the readers realize that Katniss is very protective of her sister Prim
