On April 21st, 1930, Ohio State Penitentiary, which was built in Ohio’s capital, Columbus, in 1834, caught fire and killed hundreds of inmates. When returning for the night, they discovered that a fire was started within cell blocks G and H. It was only after the fire had been doused, that everyone had realized that the scaffolding, on the outside walls of those cell blocks, was what had caught fire. At the time, the prison was known for its poor conditions. The prison was only meant to hold 1,500 people, but at the time of the fire, it was housing 4,300 inmates. This disaster goes down in history as the worst fire at any prison in the United States.
Since early times supermax prisons were used as a deterrence for extended criminal activities. We have seen facilities such as Alcatraz as early examples of supermax facilities which has been around since mid-1900. . There are many interesting points I found out about supermax prisons after reading this week article. The purpose behind super maximum security prisons is to prevent hard criminal from committing further crimes and keep them away from committing more crimes while incarcerated or inflict injuries t themselves therefore they are locked away from the rest of prison population. Supermax prison are not new and have been around for a long times as well as have been used in many different countries throughout the world.
History South Carolina South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) was developed in 1866 because the South Carolina General Assembly detected awful conditions that existed in the county jails. With the help of the general assembly, inhumane treatments of inmates were put to an end, and public hanging ended in 1878. Before the 1900’s inmates were forced to take baths in tub where the water could not have been changed until all of them were finished. Until 1937, women were still being housed in the same facilities as men. SCDC chose to use their inmates to help maintain good road conditions; if a county chose not to do so inmates would be transferred to the state.
Throughout the history, when states were at war with each other, many soldiers were captured by the opposite side and put into war prisons. The captured soldiers were unable to grasp how their freedom was suddenly snatched away from them in the process of serving their country, and resulted in them becoming prisoners of war. During the bloody battles of the Civil War, numerous Union and Confederate soldiers were captured by the opposite sides and became prisoners of war. Approximately 194,000 Union soldiers were captured by the Confederacy, out of which 30,000 died during captivity. The ones who somehow managed to stay alive in the dreaded conditions of the Southern prisons suffered from lack of food and medical care.

In 1952, there were a number of riots at the New Jersey State Prison. In order to prevent more riots the prison officials at the New Jersey State Prison decided to allow the inmates to create a council in order to voice their opinions and concerned. If I were a newly appointed warden of the New Jersey State Prison, I would implement the following rules in order to prevent the council from getting out of hand. The agreement with creation of inmates’ council is a privilege not a right and every inmate will be informed as such. Thus, it can be taken away at the warden’s discretion.
From 1896 up until 1995 the Holmesburg Prison in Pennsylvania was in constant use. Much of the history at Holmesburg’s contains instances of rioting, murder, rape and even medical experimentation. Most prisons claim some violence in their past but Holmesburg’s borders on barbaric. Maybe this strong negative energy is what keeps the ghosts of Holmesburg Prison so active.
“I have albums placed like Tetris pieces in my locker next to a small stack of fabric cubes that once opened reveal sweat shirts. I have learned to fold to unprecedented sizes with precision that any military sergeant would be pleased by” (cite??). As once said by a California Institution for Women in Chino inmate, who is serving a eighteen year sentence. These lines stood out to me, because her words put me in the moment in the cell. Looking into her locker I fell like, I was observing the pictures, she was describing.
Wayne Chance on the other hand founded Vision on Mission in 1995 within the walls of the Port of Spain Prison. In 2001 it was legally incorporated as a non-governmental organization (NGO). Mr. Chance, after being incarcerated for a number of years saw first-hand the need for rehabilitation and reintegration for ex-inmates like himself. Mr. Chance recognized the steadily increasing population of young men within the prison system and sought ways to reduce this. He lamented the lack of such a system that would seek to prevent repeat offenders into the prison system.
Seven million, three-hundred thousand children, nationally are affected by parents being incarcerated for days, weeks, months, and even years. For ten days I was affected by my father’s incarceration at the Leavenworth County Jail. To some this is nothing, but to my family, this was a huge ordeal. Not only was he absent from our lives for ten days, which was longer than he’d ever been gone, but we had to transport him there, plus watch as he walked away from his wife, his kids, and his freedom.
Building began in 1841 on a block of scrubland fronting a dirt track that became Russell Street. By 1850, the new gaol was already overcrowded. The oldest remaining section is the Second Cell Block which serves as a museum. The complex of buildings is historically significant for its role as reformatory prison for much of its functioning life.
In the early 1800s the punishment of juveniles altered to the notion to rehabilitate juvenile offenders among with separate juveniles from adults in the system, and to keep the juvenile recidivism rate low, therefore the creation of the New York House of Refuge began (ABA Dialogue Program, n.d., p.5). The House of Refuge was the first prison to separate juveniles from adults and “were supposed to provide a home for unruly and troubled children, where they would be reformed, educated, and disciplined (Roberts, 1998, p. 96).” The program did not concentrate on punishment or pain, but on life skills that the juveniles could utilized once released. According to Roberts (1998), “Order, discipline, and moral teachings were emphasized (p.97).” The
Wabash County jail (WC) and Miami County jail (MC) where the two jails we visited last week and these two jails are extremely different in many ways. Three of which stood out to me was the population of the jails, the building conditions, and the amount of staffing throughout the jail. In my opinion, Miami County jail is better overall and especially in these three areas. The population of both jails is something that stood out to me the most, in my opinion Wabash has almost zero to no space for inmates, while Miami County seemed to have some space to spare.
