Sustainable Sugarcane Ratoon Management

Botanical name: Saccharum officinarum
Family: Poaceae
Introduction:
Sugarcane is very economical crop due to its ratoon crop. Sugarcane has the ability of regeneration, from stubbles it regenerate its complete aerial shoots from axillary buds which is normally the basal part of cane shoot. This part of cane is remaining rooted to soil after aerial vegetative shoot is harvested. The phenomena of natural sprouting is occurs due to apical dominance when mature aerial shoots are removed from cane. This has great advantage for the farmers in the cultivation of sugarcane with low cost.
Ratooning is practiced throughout the sugarcane growing world but the number of ratoons that may be raised varied from region to region, even within the same region. However, generally number of rations depends upon the advantage to the farmer and industry.
In sugarcane the ratoon yield is less than the fresh crop yield perhaps the first ratoon yield will be more than other rations. In rainfed areas the ratoon yield decreases from second ratoon but in irrigated areas it is mostly decreases from first ratoon. …show more content…

Irrigation should be economical and efficient. Drip irrigation, furrow irrigation system and sprinklers can be used. Different soils have different soil texture so they have varied ability to store the water. That total available water is plant available water capacity. As crop root system become more extensive water from soil absorption also increases. For efficient irrigation there should be sufficient amount of water to wet the root zone. When the soil profile filled with maximum water after rainfall etc than then subsequent irrigation should be according to need of
