Suzan Shown Harjo's Quote Analysis

In this essay I will be reflecting on the seminar that our class had about the Pashtunwali and its influence in the characters of ‘The Kite Runner’. First of all Pashtunwali is an ethical code that Pashtuns follow. In the book it talks about two main groups of people; the Pashtun live by an unwritten code that that is flexible and changes over time. The core belief of Pashtunwali is: self respect, independence, justice, hospitality, love and forgiveness. (although this doesn't seem to apply towards hazaras.) During the story Rahim Khan stated to Amir that “There is a way to be good again.” This quote refers to an event that happened elear in Amir’s life when he let his close acquaintance Hassan get raped for his own selfish gain. After not being able to deal with the guilt he then blamed Hassan for stealing and forced him and his father to leave out of shame. The one of the teachings of Pashtunwali is

While labor issues were a factor in Hostesses bankruptcy, some of the blame can be placed on the migration of people leaning towards heathier options of food. Nguyen encapsulate this concept into a metaphor for the expansion of tolerance and open mindedness in the US now creating a heathier society. Even though the society she lives in now is ‘heathier’ she still reminisces about the Twinkie days where she could digest Twinkies (American culture) without worrying about its effect on her health (mind).

Throughout this journal, Zaroff can be characterized as confident and wacky. First, he can be considered as a confident man. In addition, the introduction of himself to Rainsford can be a detail by his speaking tone. Also, how he collaborates with Rainsford such as shake hands is a detail too. For example, “Another man was coming down the broad marble steps, an erect, slender man in evening clothes. He advanced to Rainsford and held out his hand. In a cultivated voice marked by a slight accent that gave it added precision and deliberateness, he said, ‘it is a very great pleasure and honor to welcome Mr. Sanger Rainsford, the celebrated hunter, to my home’” (Connells 4). According to the quote, it exposes the tone of his voice was talking to a friend that he cognized for a long time.

In Michael Pollan’s essay “Escape from the Western Diet,” he directly to Americans about the western diet and why he believes they need to escape from it. The reason Americans should escape the western diet is to avoid the harmful effects associated with it such as “western diseases” (Pollan, 420). To support his view on the issue, Pollan describes factors of the western diet that dictate what Americans believe they should eat. These factors include scientists with their theories of nutritionist, the food industry supporting the theories by making products, and the health industry making medication to support those same theories. Overall, Pollan feels that in order to escape this diet, people need to get the idea of it out of their heads. In turn, he provides his own rules for escaping the western diet as well as the idea of nutritionist set forth by scientists.

This quote shows that Dick is longing to forget about the murders and move on with his life. Capote uses words like " Why the hell couldn't Perry shut up" and "He was Annoyed.. Annoyed as hell" to show Dick his antagonistic attitude towards Perry's level of concern. Though he secretly feels guilty about what happened, he wishes that Perry would stop bringing it up since that makes it harder for him to forget about the horrific event. With this quote Capote's is trying to reveal that Dick thought of Perry as paranoid and over dramatic. Grandma quietly whispers a blessing over the food for her grandchildren. She believes that the combined power of her prayers and the food will nourish her grandchildren for success. In the Navajo culture, during a ceremony the Hogan (home) is filled with food to bless the medicine man and to nourish everyone in the family. Navajo women are taught to take pride in the meals they prepare because the feelings and attitudes they carry will be absorbed by those who eat the meal. Ursula Le Guin defines Omelas as a utopia where the citizens’ lives are never wretched. Le Guin captures her readers’ attention by describing the city’s beauty with the colorful scenery, events featuring games and horse riding, and the everlasting happiness. She does a great job of leading her readers into thinking this could be the perfect society, but leaves us with the question of satisfaction. According to Le Guin, “happiness is based on a just discrimination of what is necessary, what is neither necessary nor destructive, and what is destructive” (p. 2). This quote means that there must be a balance for the society to succeed. The basic needs in life are considered as water, food, and reproduction, and the simple wants are “central heating, subway trains, washing machines, and all kinds of marvelous devices” (p.2). The destruction to society could be one’s remorse for the child’s suffering. If one shows sympathy for the child and it is released from the basement, the city’s beauty and happiness will vanish. This ongoing has been a large discussion for many people. He exemplifies that through Eric Schlosser of the “Dark Side of the All-American Meal” (2001) and how San Franciscans, fretted largely about, “the nutritional dangers to their children’s health, began the last century by banning “roving pie vendors” who catered to the “habitual pie-eating” habits of schoolchildren and prohibiting the sale of soft drinks on school campuses.” (Leitcher) The question then becomes at the center of all the health promotions advertised, the advice spoken, and advocacy, to what lengths do one literary novel change the social fabric of how Americans look at food

The illusion of death has wondered and astonished many for years. This doesn 't exclude the fantastic author Shakespeare. Throughout the play, Shakespeare focuses on death and how society glorifies it. He often uses metaphor and analogy in order to make death seem more welcoming.

Despite all of General Zaroff’s success, fortune and his appeared attitude, Zaroff is in many ways not civilized. Civilized means being polite, well-mannered or treating others with respect. Well Zaroff treats Rainsford good at first evident by giving him a cocktail, treating him to a meal, and hoping to hunt with him until he says “I wish to leave this island at once”. This quote hit Zaroff in his heart. He honestly wanted to befriend Rainsford, but once things go opposite of how he wanted, he decides to try to kill him. In today’s world, there is a division among the people in the world regarding whether or not it is ethical to eat meat. After researching about eating meat and vegetarianism, I have come to the conclusion that it is indeed ethical to eat meat in today’s society. Sure, eating meat might have its drawbacks, but I have found that the benefits of eating meat far outweigh the negatives of eating it. Eating meat not only helps improve people’s health, but it also helps strengthen our economy and it has little difference in the environmental impact that involves in the farming of vegetables.
