Introduction
Maruti Udyog Limited was formed in 1981 under the provisions of Indian Companies Act 1956. The then government of India selected Suzuki Motor Corporation of Japan as the joint venture partner for the company and in 1982 a JV was signed between Government of India and Suzuki Motor Corporation. Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) was commonly known as Maruti Udyog Limited earlier and it is a subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation of Japan. Maruti Suzuki has been India 's largest passenger car company and accounts for over 50% of the domestic car market.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto was launched in 2000. Even after almost 17 years of its inception Maruti Suzuki Alto has managed to dominate the entry level segment in the country. Throughout these years different, fresh variants and facelifted versions of Alto have been introduced which helped remain on top of the sales chart. It is still one of the highest and prominent selling cars in the country.
Various reasons can be cited for the popularity and prominence of Alto like Maruti Suzuki’s nationwide service network, Alto’s reliability and its lower maintenance cost. Alto is also preferred in in remote hilly areas where the availability of mechanics and spare parts is limited along with tier one and tier two cities.
