Syagros got up, got dressed for the day and went downstairs to be greeted by his brother, Kyros, and his mother, Daphne. While they were eating breakfast Syagros couldn’t stop thinking about that dream. Syagros family wished him a good day as he was leaving for work. He turned around and saw a man who looked to be in his 50’s and very wise. Syagros asked the man who he was and the man simply answered that he was Zeus. Syagros wondered if it was Zeus that helped him in the fight. He asked Zeus and Zeus said he did because he was impressed with the bravery that Syagros showed, and his drive to protect his friend. Zeus told Syagros that the reason Posiden traped them on the island was to test Syagros. Zeus went on to tell him that Syagrus was Zeus’s son. That's why Syagros was able withstand the lightning bolt. Syagros had so many questions, but zeus had to go, so Syagros thanked Zeus as he left and went to find Tenes. “Father Zeus, doesn’t it infuriate you to see this violence? We gods get the worst of it from each other whenever we try to help out men. Why did you have to give birth to that madwoman, your marauding daughter who is always breaking the rules? All the rest of us gods, everyone on Olympus, listens to you. But she can say or do whatever she wants.”
At that moment, Arcas, Callisto's son, was hunting in the forest. He saw a bear and shot it in it's heart. Suddenly the bear started transforming back into Callisto. Arcas, realizing what he has done, cried loudly. He became angry that Zeus had done this.
More than just the chance to get shot, the war institutionalized the characters. "We became hard, suspicious, pitiless, vicious, tough […] We did not break down but adapted ourselves. " The 20-year olds, fresh out of school, were forced to adopt a mindset that allowed them to acclimate to the constant death surround themselves. They learned to take pride is small victories, that to the everyday civilian were normal, but to them were rarities, like comradery and a good meal. "When I see them here [..] I feel an irresistible attraction in it, I would like to be here too and forget the war […] but also it repels me."
Here we came upon a cave full of sheep and crates of milk and cheese. The men advise me to snatch some of the food and hurry off, but, unfortunately, I decided to linger. The cave’s inhabitant soon returned, and it was the Cyclops Polyphemus, son of Poseidon. He made a show of hospitality at first, but soon turned hostile. He devoured two of my men on the spot and imprisoned us for future meals.
Millions of people have gone through life-altering experiences in their time in World War I. In Erich Maria Remarque’s novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, Paul Bäumer, a 19-year-old German soldier, narrates his personal memoirs of this war. He describes the mental change and suffering he goes through as he is forced to mature from a young boy to a soldier in order to survive, leaving him permanently scarred from the throes of war. By employing juxtaposition to contrast Paul’s mindset, before and after the war, Remarque demonstrates how the mental health of the World War I soldiers is damaged because of the abrupt loss of their youth, leaving them in a state of survival and mental instability.
