Symbolism through "Sweat” Delia Jones is a hard working, Christian woman that has lived by two principles her entire life: work and sweat. Despite her husband, Skyes', cruelty, she keeps quiet in order to provide for them and keep a roof over their heads. The idea of good and evil in the characters is clear in the appalling story of Delia's abuse, the death of Skyes, and the struggle and survival of Delia at the end. In the short story “Sweat,” Zora Neale Hurtson uses symbols to represent how good wins over evil by using the title, Christian symbolism, and the concept of light versus dark. “Sweat”, referring to the hard work Delia displays, is important to the plot of good against evil because of the idea that she works to provide for her …show more content…
Light is typically used to guide people and give a sense of safety and direction, while in darkness you are unable to see what may be surrounding you or a way out of a bad situation. The end of the short story uses this concept through the saving of Delia in the light and the killing of skyes in the dark. “Delia enters the house, finds a match, and lights the lantern. Running from the snake, ‘the wind from the open door blew out the light and the darkness added terror’. Skyes enters the dark house, while Delia sits outside the bedroom window. The window shade keeps the morning light from shining through the house as Skyes hears the rattlesnake.” (Champion). The match Delia lights guides her away from the evil in the dark so she can escape the death planned for her by Skyes. The snake inevitably kills Skyes in the dark, this helps build on the concept that light saves the good, while darkness is where evil starts and ends. The concept of light versus dark also creates the atmosphere in the story, “The gray in the sky was spreading. Delia descended without fear now, and crouched beneath the low bedroom window. The drawn shade shut out the dawn, shut in the night. But the thin walls held back no sound.” (Zora Neale Hurtson), this dark ominous setting is made to give the reader a feeling that something bad is going to happen. The dark and gloomy sky, as well as closed blinds to keep the light out help bring a dark and evil feeling. All this was set for the death of Skyes, as he was the biggest source of darkness, and the survival of Delia through the use of a light

On the contrary, darkness threatens the characters in the story. The night, which exemplifies social and personal challenges, can be discovered everywhere. Literary, the darkness haunts the figures in the text, something they are aware of when the sun goes down. Similarly, Sonny's problems in prison, addiction to drugs, and the condition of life in Harlem are exemplified by the darkness (King and Lynn 47-49). Ultimately, the light comes to signify comfort, salvation, and love, while darkness represents the misery and fear that persistently threatens to extinguish it.
He demonstrates this saying “there was evening brightness,” when talking about the light outside and then writing “inside it was dusk” (38). The small light in the confined area represents the freedom people have. The darkness is to show the struggle people take to ensure a stable life for the future and the hard work it takes. The light from the day outside the bunkhouse shows that although things might seem bright the internal conflict in a person darkens it. He also claims the “cone of the shade threw its brightness straight downward, leaving the corners of the bunkhouse still in dusk” to argue that people are far to confined inside (38).
The darkness that follows him foreshadows the pain and downfall that is to follow him. In comparison, Antigone is shown in the light. The lighting portrays that Antigone’s future will be bright in that she is fully contempt with her actions and choices. Therefore, she walks in the light. Finally, Antigone has her handed placed firmly on the table.
Only Darkness Cavemen could not defeat it. Pioneers would not venture into it. Every child fears it. Darkness has been captivating mankind throughout many centuries in attempt to convey the significance of it.
The sun creeping up represents a new beginning for Delia that comes with the death of her abusive husband who never supported her, or her work in any way. These two quotes support the theme because the association of Sykes arriving with the gray sky spreading, and him dying with the sun coming up proves that Delia was not treated equally or appreciated in her relationship with Sykes, and therefore their relationship did not thrive, it died. Finally, irony was used by Hurston to really bring out the idea that relationships must be equal. The irony of the story occurs when Sykes lets the snake loose in the

Darkness and music have given unusual prominence that emphasises the awful life in Harlem, and how music brought those two brothers together at the end of the story. Each symbol represents its own unique sign. The light used in many forms such as moonlight, spotlight, or even the light of the car. “There isn’t any other tale to tell, it’s the only light we’ve got in all this darkness” (James). Besides the fear, and despair of society in Harlem, the light seems to be glowing in the darkness, symbolizes a form of salvation and a moral life.
The light in the darkness comes with the father’s goodbye when he tells the boy, “‘You have to carry the fire.’ ‘I dont know how to.’ Yes you do.’ ‘Is it real? The fire?’
Unnatural events that occur often were related to the concept of light and dark, as good is overthrown in darkness. After
Sweat by Zora Neale Hurston displays countless acts of symbolism through imagery, it partially requires deeper knowledge and understanding. Religion has clearly played a predominant role in Hurston 's life, this is exemplified by the references to a snake and Gethsemane. The symbolism presented throughout the story has a significant impact and in the wake of evaluating it; they give the story more clout while justifying the true meaning behind the title, Sweat. The most obvious symbol in the story is the title. In the narrative it states, “Looka heah, Sykes, you done gone too fur.

Darkness can be a comfortable place for anyone. Without having to look at yourself or have people see you, one may not feel as judged or insecure. Light is revealing. In a bright room, you can’t hide tears, blemishes, or emotions. Blanche, from A Streetcar Named Desire, knows the pain of light all to well.
